Gentleman im sure you all remember my first review on a wotac.(jesus what a flop that was)Im going to try again on the newest lot from matt wonders..First off Matt is a great person to deal with he stands behind his product 100%.Any kind of flaw you find in his scope will be dealt with in a timely and very professional manner.
Now i know this is not a nf.or a uso, leupy, primere, etc. But for what it is it seems like a very good scope for the price.
I talked to matt in great detail about his line of optics. He deffiantly knows his shit.
Here we go.Remeber i am not connected with wonder optics any way shape or form. This will be a unbiased review to the best of my abilities.
The scope arrived to me in a plain black box marked 4.5-14x50 on one end.Opening the box revealed a large 30mm tactical turreted variable scope.I had a gen 2 wotac and these two scopes do not compare except for the glass both scopes glass is top notch imo.The only other scope i have to compare the glass to is my nf-f1.the nf has superb glass and is a top shelf scope. To my 42 year old eyes the wotacs glass compares very favorably being just as clear. The contrast and color defination arent as good but this is a 330$ scope compared to a 2300$ scope.
Functionability
Function on the wotac so far is superb.I took this scope out yesterday and zeroed it on a savage that i know is a very good shooter with 168 gmm.I wont bore you with group sizes or it can out shoot me.Personally i have never seen a rifle shoot by itself anyway.lol.Anyway back to the scope.I began shooting at 100yrds after the rifle was sighted in.(5 shot groups LL)
Everything.was boringly on par with any other descent scope. So i moved on to 200.I clicked in the ele. which i know isnt much.but i just wanted to test on out as far as my range is capable of(only 300 yrds)200yrd clicks were spot on.next i moved on to 300 I put in 14 more clicks of ele.Again spot on.
I had a very limited amount of ammo so i came back down to 100 stopping at 200 to check for repeatability, spot on.And last back to zero.Again spot on.
Next with the ammo i had left i thought i would do a 20"inch box test at 100yrds.I got everthing set up and did my clicking and shooting everything passed with spot on flying colors.
scope aestetics.
The wotac is a nice looking scopes with a rich even matte finish.the sun shade that comes with it has the same finish and matches perfectly.
The turrets have a very nice click to them with no mushiness and no play in between clicks.I wish they had more of a tactile feel to them. There is some but with heavy gloves on imo you wouldnt feel them.
The parralex adjustment works as it should and has been changed a little. It is more on line with the falcon parralex meaning instead of numbers it has a ever enlarging line untill infinity which has the infinity mark. All the knobs have just enough stifness to them to keep from accidently being turned.
rectile..
I personally like the rectile on this scope. It is called the epb rectile. The way it is set up is a cross hair with hash marks seperated every two moa all the way to twenty moa. With every ten moa haveing a longer hash mark.
One of the things i like the most is the ability to use this scope in moa or mil. This is done simply by having a arrow set up on the tube pointing at the power ring.T power ring is set up with a square box right at 9 that hase moa in it.the next box is right in front of the ten on the power ring with mil in it.All you have to do is line up your preferred way to use it and volia your good to go either way.
Gripes
I only really have one. That being the screws to reset the turrets back to zero. They are very little and are made out of very soft aluminum. After i reset the knobs back to zero.I immeaditally stripped one retightning the screws.Luckily matt has the forsight to put extra set screws in with the scope.
Would i buy another one?Yes.would i reccomend this scope to someone looking for a econimacol scope that performs as it should and for the price seems to be very well made?Yes i would
Sorry this review didnt cover all bases. But i was low on ammo and it was threating rain any minute.......I hope maybe this small review will awnser a few questions anyone has.If you have any more ? about the scope that i havent covered pm me and i will try to awnser them

Re: wotac gen 4 review

I actually just got ahold of one of the Gen4s also. I will supliment this with another review when I get a chance, but thus far, I think that 467 is spot on.

I have heard that Matt added some staff and time to QC this batch more than before (as that was their biggest problem, previously).

These may turn out to be a vaible alternative for the budget market. And are definitely a good value (if they stand up t the torture tests).

Re: wotac gen 4 review

Thanks for the write up 467.

I have had one of these on my Tikka for about two weeks. Performed same tests roughly as 467 with same results.

One note of interest: one of my 200 yard groups was the smallest I've shot through this barrel to date. All of my groups were very consistent and tight and may be due to the fact that the reticle is very fine compared to what I've been used to. We're not talking night and day here, just enough that I noticed the pattern. (I suppose this was my biggest concern about the FFP Falcons, that the reticle would be so big at high power that I would not like it).

Ditto on the glass. It is surprisingly good for a scope of this pricepoint. I would say it's surprisingly good. Period. I dabble a bit in photography. My father was a pro. I have pretty high expectations of optics. Inexpensive optics=bad optics. Apparently not in this case. Not sure how Matt has gotten this level of glass into this inexpensive of a scope, but it made me smile the first time I looked through it. Will it outperform your NF or USO in low light. Probably not (OK, no). Is it completly free from defect. No. Do I think you will be amazed if you actually looked through one? Yes. I would be willing to say that in a blind test most would not be able to pick it out of a group of other high-end optics.

The adjustments do feel a little vague to me. The combination of o-ring under the turret and the heavy grease they use to get the turret over the o-ring caused enough drag on mine that the knob could easily be stopped between clicks and settle. Wiped the grease off the o-rings under the caps and coated with some silicone lube. This helped a lot. Matt said you could actually remove that O-ring and still have several layers of waterproofing intact. I tried this but the knobs move VERY easy then. Rather have one more layer and not have self turning knobs.

YMMV.

I haven't actually seen a Falcon in person, but from what I have seen in photos the fit and finish might be slightly better than the WOTAC. It does have that $329 scope look to it, even though it's big & beefy.

The knobs are a little cheesy (gotta cut cost somewhere). Mine wobbled back and forth on the bottom when turned like they were out of square with the shaft (actually moved back and forth over the reference line). Matt said that some of them were not square on the bottom, which is easily remedied and that some adjustment of the three screws could also help with this. He chose this option over the splined shaft approach so users could adjust the knobs so that the lines lined up perfectly.

I have to say I did not expect much for $329 and was emboldened to try one due to his satisfaction gaurantee. Overall I would say it is a home run for the pricepoint. Now, what will make it a home run without reservation for me is if it tracks repeatably out to over 30 MOA and back and everywhere in between and reliably hold its zero.

I'm heading to the range tomorrow, but I'm still evaluating loads in my new barrel and will be sitting at 600 yards. I want to get out and really wring the knobs so I can feel like I have something I can trust. Matt did say that if I'm not completely happy, he will replace the scope with another or credit the purchase price towards a Falcon or other scope he carries.

Great customer service. Very knowledgeable owner. I will continue to do business with him, whether or not I end up keeping this scope.

Re: wotac gen 4 review

How is the reticle focus (Diopter thing)
Is it tight - no movement?
I don't mean tight to turn but no up down or side to side play?

Re: wotac gen 4 review

I ran some optical tests on one and here are my findings:

1. The positive clicks have NO backlash--something I've not seen mentioned before on this Board. That cannot be reliably exposed in a shooting box test, unless it's really big like a full MOA of slop.

2. The resolution and clarity allows me to read the inch and half-inch lines on a fat Stanley tape measure at 95 feet in full daylight. I can tell the 1/8-inch lines are there, but can't fully resolve them. At night under a floodlamp that's about 50 feet away, I could only read the inch numbers.

By comparison, a Vortex Viper (yeah, not a $1,000++++ glass) was just enough more crisp in daylight, letting me more easily see the 1/8-inch mark and I could tell there were 1/16-inch marks even though I couldn't really read which one was closest to the [pretty thick] crosshairs.

All this was at 14x, the max mag for the WOTac. I had to fudge the ocular on the Vortex to focus, as its side-parallax focus goes down to only about 50 yards.

Later, I'll figure out the math from my optical measurements--though on sandbags with a rifle, which combined, sometimes drifted .75 MOA....

Re: wotac gen 4 review

I also picked up the new gen 4 and though I have not had the chance to shoot it yet I am pleased with first impression. I got the tactical version (as compared to the target with the "dust cover" turrets). I did think the turret clicks where soft at first having only compared them to my weaver grandslam. Then I took the turret knob off and moved the turrets that now resembled the same size as my weaver. The clicks where just as tight, positive and adible and made me realize it is because of the leverage you get in the large turrets that allow us to move them easier.

Really like the rectical, and the savings in $ allowed me to buy enough brass, powder and bullets to get good with my rifle.

Now I am working on picking up a second. Though Matt sold out of the gen 4s (like 500 of them) in the first few weeks they where avialable. I hear a higher power 6-20 with a MP-8 (think that is correct) rectical copy may be in the works. I'll be on the waiting list:)

Good shooting

Too late, they have been out of stock for a couple of weeks now. Matt said they should be in first week of October.

Re: wotac gen 4 review

I can't seem to get my 10x40 to focus at around 100 yards. The reticle is nice an clean, yet I cannot seem to get a good sight picture that is completely focused. There's a 5x5" plaque with some writing on it thats about 1" letters and I cant seem to get it clear enough to read. It just seems fuzzy. Any ideas?

Not sure, I am assuming you have adjusted the eyepiece focus?

Re: wotac gen 4 review

yup, the parallax knob is on the side, same as the other gen 4's and I focus it in and I can't seem to keep it crisp. I know it's not my vision as I have 20/20 or better, and the lettering just stays fuzzy. I move it to around where the 100 yard parallax setting should be, it clears up along the edges, but right down the middle, near the center of the crosshairs it gets a little fuzzy. Not fun. I've heard of people being able to read a stop sign at 1200 yards...I cant even read WARNING at 100.

Re: wotac gen 4 review

When I got the scope I adjusted the ocular focus first to get a clear reticule with no movement, and then I have read to just lock it down and never touch it again.

Since then, I've tried refocusing it a couple times to see if maybe that was the problem and I couldnt tell.

I'm thinking I should just send out an email to sightwonders and see if this is normal.
