I ordered a custom action, and I'm just curious on your guys thoughts. The base of the bolt right in front of the handle is missing nitriding, and there is a scratch on the bottom of the action right where the mag would seat showing bare metal.

This is a new action, from a vendor. I don't want to put anyone on blast.

Not gonna affect function, however $1500 for just the action I suppose I had higher expectations on fit and finish.

I never understand why people are willing to deal with QC in the firearms industry.

The action costs as much as a new freezer…if the freezer was a scratched handle you’d get a new one
IMO there is this “I don’t want to inconvenience a fellow 2A advocate” subconscious thing that needs to be replaced with “I bought a product and the company that produced that product failed me. They will fix it.”

It should be without visible flaws when received, and not accepted by the public.
Most people will drive a new car back to the dealer or have the flaw repaired before taking possession.
But a firearm cost money to send it back in through the FFL dealer, and shipping will most likely be added on.
May times they are not even repaired, with two or three tries to get issues resolved.
Or a note that says it's in spec, for even mechanical issues.
Its up to you, but it can take a long time to get satisfaction, and its only a finish and a scratch, but you didn't put it there.
Many have a 30 day return policy that they try to run out.
Different people working at the same company, will present a different attitude towards the customer.

Actually, the freezer would be considered scratch and dent.
They usually sell for around 1/2 price for minor stuff not even visible when installed.

I actually was just shopping for a second freezer, went to the local appliance places to look for scratch and dent, they both told me with freezers almost everyone accepts the financial compensation and keeps the freezer so you rarely see them back.

different story with appliances that are viewed more frequently

Nitriding is not a surface coating and the black coloration is an oxide layer that is very thin and even if abraded off, the compound layer and diffusion layer still exists before it reaches base metal. Simply put, the black coloration is mostly cosmetic and provides little surface level corrosion resistance.

I am tired of companies being praised for “Making it right” quickly.

Maybe make it right the first time?

Loyalty, easily bought, for the price of a return label.

That and ignorant fucks that say "it's a gun, it will get scatches, what's the big deal?" That's not the point, you paid for a new item, you should receive the same in new condition without defects. Fridge, car, gun, etc. Would you go buy a King Ranch or whatever and tell the dealer-nah, don't worry about that scratch down the drivers door and paint missing from the hood?

I feel the same when many of the items we buy are $1500-$5000 and sell used for 1/2 that.

If you aren't happy with it send it back right away. I have an action I accepted with several blemishes in the nitride treatment. I've had it for a few years and just dealt with it but it pissed me off knowing I paid good money for it.

Just yesterday I took a picture of the blemishes and emailed the manufacturer They are having me send it in to get the finish redone. Now that rifle will sit in pieces till I get it back. I wish I would have addressed the issue right away.

I’m personally a fan of character as long as it won’t rust or affect the function.

For me getting a scratch on my truck makes me less concerned with getting the next scratch on it. So I use it as a truck more

I know guys who use their grill. Then wash the entire thing after use. It continues to look new and makes them happy. Different strokes for different folks

Amen about the scratch on the truck. Same way here.

I looked it over and the scratch is very very minor, nitride on the bolt looks more dull then missing upon closer inspection. Appreciate everyone's replies. I'll post pictures on Sunday when the overlords let me pick it up.
