I'm a lawyer, but I have done almost no criminal defense. That being said, generally, you are entitled to use deadly force against anyone who comes at you with a knife, no matter how crazy they are. If a 6-month-old baby could manage to rush you with a knife, it would be legal to shoot.

The standard is reasonable fear of serious bodily harm or death, and where I live, you can also throw in things like rape, arson to an occupied structure, and, oddly, treason. If a crazy person puts you in serious danger, you can shoot. If a good Samaritan mistakes you for a criminal, you can shoot. You can even shoot the police if they make a mistake, but they will plant a gun on you and lie like crazy, so good luck with that.

The treason thing has always amazed me. How likely are you to run into someone who is about to commit treason?

I'm allowed to shoot burglars before they get through doors and windows, so that's pretty neat. If your head is in my house, say goodbye to your behind. I can kill carjackers, too.

It would be nice if we had resources to contain crazies instead of shooting them, but if we did, we would do the same thing for people who are just plain bad. It's like telling cops to shoot people in the leg. Not practical.

It was definitely 5150 and suicidal and my SD training supports a "good shoot" outcome however; it is also clear that with that many officers responding, one or two of them could have deployed a taser to take control of the situation. Why it took 20 days to die is a mystery but suggests sepsis or other post-surgery complications. Unknown is the influence of drugs on Linda, both recreational before the incident and after arrival at the hospital. In the end Linda created the entire scenario, was FN out of her head and shot when yielding a knife. Could have been handled better IMHO but have no sympathy for crazies this out of control. Mental illness and suicide is quite common among trans people. I would exonerate the officer and require additional training for all officers involved. I do digital SD scenario training that is quite helpful and forces you to use the 8" between your ears. On my birthday I was allowed to try my hand in law enforcement scenarios, which get the blood pumping...cops are waaay underpaid.

That's a good point. I don't care about the tranny other than to provide a conflict of ethics, like in the thread about christians and capital punishment.

I fully support a police officer using force, especially if force is being threatened against him, such as in this case.

Be careful, it sounds like you are awfully close to saying the cop was doing the right thing and justified in his actions. I would hate for you to get that reputation ruined that you have crafted so carefully.
