Wow

Surely there is body cam footage of this interaction between Richardson and the female officer. Right? How often does it occur that an armed civilian gets a pass to brandish a weapon in the presence of the police?

The skill of smoothly reholstering and storing the gun back out of sight need to be practiced just as often as accurate shooting. If you are an armed citizen like Elisjsha Dicken and you just neutralized an armed threat, OR, you didn't get to neutralize the threat yet but you notice that police tactical teams are already on scene, you NEED to immediately reholster and put the gun away right there. By the time you make contact with uniformed responders, your gun is not to be visible.

It sucks, but active shooter and terrorist situations are extreme stress situations. When uniformed responders show up, they tend to assume that ANYBODY armed who is not wearing a uniform is a potential tango. Undercover and plainclothes officers have been blasted by their own uniformed comrades in the past during shooting involved violent arrests. The only time it is safe for anyone to openly brandish a weapon when interacting with uniformed responders is if they are ALSO wearing a uniform that immediately identifies them as an armed professional security guard or an officer of another jurisdiction, county, state LE department. Fire marshal and sanitation police count, yes, but you need to be wearing a conspicuous LEO uniform to get a free pass to have a gun in your hand when interacting with other uniformed LEO.

I agree. I’m not saying the cop is in the clear here by no means but as a civvie if the gun comes out, it’s as a last resort, and it should be reholstered immediately once the threat is done. Dude didn’t do himself any favors standing around with the gun in his hand.

Gov’t terrorist strikes again. Any cop who oversteps deserves to be hung by the public. Enough is enough. Cops shouldn’t exist anyhow. It’s the most worthless job available and only empowers the state. I hope a family member is successful in his revenge.

Dude just watched his brother get in a gun battle and is watching him die on the pavement. Anybody that says he should have done this or done that is full of shit and Monday Morning Quarterbacking. I can’t imagine a more stressful, fight or flight situation. Expecting him to dance to the nine hundred laws that applied is bullshit. Cops are trained in deescalation, but rarely seem to use it anymore. Yes, the guy should have dropped the gun immediately, but I challenge anyone to think clearly in those circumstances.
