So I'm on to my next build.....I'm trying to find a bottom metal that allow me to seat the heavier VLD close to the lands. Not quite sure how to figure that out.

Here is the the plans for now

Rem 700 SA
Manners T3
Rock 8.5 Twist, Fluted Sendero around 25-26" finish

I did hear Berger is coming out with a 195grn VLD.....I want to make sure the new build will handle the longer seaters.

Thanks in advance

Take a look at Seekins WSM bottom metal. Might be just what you're looking for.

Re: WSM Bottom Metal

You could get any AICS compatible DBM system and run Alpha Type 3 WSM mags. They get mixed reviews, but the two I have run fine. Just another option for you to explore...

Re: WSM Bottom Metal

you can use the type 3 alpha mags and have the freebore cut shorter if you want to keep it in a short action. or you could run it in a long action.
I have to run the 208 maxes at oal of 2.975 to feed in the wsm mags, which puts them pretty far off the lands, but I know the bergers are more sensitive to the jump.
Good luck on the project

Re: WSM Bottom Metal

If your not dead set on a DBM then you can use an extended Wyatt's magazine box along with a BDL floor plate. I have a 300wsm and it feeds flawlessly from it and I run the 185 VLD's at the lands.

I'm guessing your building a 7WSM if your talking about the 195 Berger. You are going to need a 1-8" twist barrel to handle those. I would run the 180 hybrid, not sensitive to seatingt depth like the VLD. The options mentioned above are your best for bottom metal., or just run a long action.

I heard the 195VLDs are going to be the Hybrid Hunting bullet...although they may not be sensitive to seating depth, they could like it 20-50thou off....obviously I don't know, so I'm trying to guess a little to be on the safe side.

Also looked into the wyatts bigger factory box...seems liek i can get 2.995 internal dimensions, and they also have the extended mag BDL floor plate to add a couple more rounds....once i get it built I'll report back...
and I'm gonna run the 8.5twist rock creek 5R...should hold them just fine.

Re: WSM Bottom Metal

Just curious, what type of hunting will you be doing with a true short action 7WSM loaded with 195 super duper ultra low drag Bergers and a detachable box mag?

Sounds a little unorthodox, but there again, I'm not a big hunter...

Re: WSM Bottom Metal

Sounds like a perfect LR Elk Cartridge....

Using Ballistic AE on my iphone.
With 195's pushing them around 2,750MV... (Guessing)
and Bergers Estimated .794 G1 BC
1000yds.....1,851fps and 1,483 lbs of energy....
1450yds.....1,521fps and 1,002 lbs of energy....

Sounds like an ass kicker. Damn elk wont even know what hit him.
