Long story short...I have spent a fuck load of time in the desert looking up at the big , clear night sky. I have NEVER seen what I saw tonight.

I saw 18 satellites...all on the exact same orbit and spaced evenly apart flying over head. They were so closely and evenly spaced, that 5 of them at a time were visible as they followed the same track across the sky. I have seen about a bazillion satellites over the years, and I have never seen that.

Anyone have any insight?

Probably Starlink, or a fresh deployment of orbiting hardware getting into position. SpaceX (among others) are sending up 2 dozen satellites per launch. Different folks from telecommunications to the military own the individual units, the rocket is a taxi for hire.

Amazon is also looking to deploy over 3200 satalites with the Kuiper project, and they are not alone. The skies are going to get busy.

Record your lat/long and time.
download app called sky guide
Plug in coords and time
Enable satellites
Tap on the space object tracking across the sky and the app tells you the info

pretty cool app

So about 2 months ago, I found noticed something similar in the night sky. There would be a "star" going at a certain angle from left to right. It would disappear and a next one would then appear behind and take the same route. They never deviated from that one same path and this happened with like maybe 20 ish "stars" but I'm sure they weren't really stars.

 well, shit.

Multiple satellite apps available that will tell you exactly what you are seeing.

What you probably saw was commercial air traffic up around 35,000ft following an Alpha Airspace Route. Sound does not reach the ground observer. AFAIK, military airspace picks up somewhere above 50,000ft.

Satellites usually reflect white, while aircraft will show strobe white, and steady green and/or red; dependent upon their aspect.

I learned about this when I was taking flight lessons back in the early 90's.

Transcontinental commercial flight plans are ATC guided into a uniform altitude, heading, and airspeed to provide a safe pattern at a generally equal interval. Basically, it's an official game of "Follow The Leader".

Satellites will flow Eastward, North, or South; while aircraft will generally follow East/West routes over continental USA.

Typically, there will be a Westbound Alpha Route path, usually accompanied several miles North or South by another traveling in the Eastbound direction.

This happens literally all the time. These phenomena are the origins of many UFO sightings.

I spent 9 years living and working in the Arizona desert looking up at the sky just about every night. The difference between planes and satellites is not unfamiliar to me.

Sure you did it's ok satellites , ET and Elvis its ok people will understand everyone goes through a little stress from time to time , at least till you start talking and answering all those funny little voices in your head ... then people run away .lol

UCS Satellite Database
In-depth details on the 2,218 satellites currently orbiting Earth, including their country of origin, purpose, and other operational details.

All I know is my drone returns to within 2 feet of where it took off.

Wait til you see signs up there that say, "Shop Costco", and so forth. Right now what you see is only at low sun times, won't happen during the night because the sun won't be reflecting off those Greyhound bus sized satellites. In a few years it will be a problem but you won't have any more control because you are one of us useful idiots who keeps allowing these outrages.

Wait until a couple hit each other and the debris starts a chain reaction. Civilization will collapse without satellite communications.
Reroutes will happen quickly; no, civilization won't collapse without the satellites, but it could cause a massive reorg. I could be wrong; you could be right, but I don't think civilization would totally collapse.

Perhaps my sarcasm missed. I'm a satcom tech. Different orbital layers. I'm not sure how slow the financial sector would be going to copper and fiber. Now if someone really wanted to cause chaos...

Of course we decided the Independence Day aliens are going to show up after the quarantine, but they wont stay long. Yellowstone will erupt in August to finish off the summer.

Think Star Link just passed over Massachusetts about an hour or so ago.

Looked like a satellite race track.

Much smaller light sources than I expected and the craft are spread out a little bit more, not as depicted in the Daily sun pictures but close enough together and easy enough to see that it gets your attention.

What you saw is your future. 24/7 monitoring of what and who you are doing.

Future? No, this is your past decade +/ present/ and life thereof. They dont 'need' satellites to track you. You've already given them finer access points. But, if they needed to use intel assets to track you I hope you can evade thermal/radar/infrared/EM tracking all at once.... Then again, which of you are that high value for the gov to waste time using all those assets (2-3) at once.

The Starlink satellites are just optical routers. Work the same was as the routers that make up the internet only instead of fiber optic and ethernet cabling they use light from lasers to send and optical receivers to receive. There will be over 40K of these satellites and each one can "see" a few in their vicinity so laser info can be relayed like shining a flashlight. Each one "knows" where the others are and instantly passes "packets" by laser beam to the next guy in a zigzagging line aiming toward the destination satellite that beams it down to land based internet. Every millisecond saved in time translates to billions of dollars in the stock market in a year for financial companies.
The whole scheme is based on the fact that light travels twice as fast in space as it does in a fiber optic thread, which is technically glass.

You're lucky to have seen them. When they're close together they are still in low orbit. Subtle ion propulsion engines are pushing them to higher orbits making them harder to see, plus they are now putting screens on them so they don't reflect to the ground causing some people to be upset with the "sky pollution". Soon there will be over 40,000 Starlink satellites. If you live in the boonies you can get the highest speed internet for $80 per month.

When will this cheap high speed Internet be available ?
Never. Let me explain.

Even if the actual service was cheap one must consider the following: 1) new green tax, 2) pay for obama phones, 3) pelosi satellite dishes, 4) schumer city dweller roof tax for satellite dishes, 5) disturbed magnetic field tax, 6) disturbed high frequency radio wave tax, 7) millimetre wave emission tax, 8) taxes for collection of taxes 1-8.
