WTO launches a semiauto .22 based on X-ring action: CSX-22

Was looking at WTO site today and ran across this. They're launching a new 5 pound .22lr semiauto, built on the 10-22 platform, but using a customized version of the Tactical Solutions X-ring action, and sitting in an adjustable Manners stock.

For me personally, probably not an option in the near future as I just blew my .22lr budget for about the next 5 years, with recent additions of a Vudoo, a Kidd, and related ammo and gear. But a lightweight, accurized rifle on the 10-22 pattern, fully ambi operation, and that Manners stock--it would be pretty appealing build for certain niche uses in my .22lr line-up that I don't have covered today. Nice looking rifle build by WTO.

Not a big fan of either the tacsol receiver or barrel. My experience with a tacsol receiver was that its a great concept with the dual recoil spring mechanism but is overly complicated and a maintenance headache to clean compared to a standard 10/22 receiver layout. Getting the dual spring rod ends into the receiver grooves is a lot of “joy”. If weight is the driving factor I’d spec a KIDD supergrade receiver with either a lightweight or superlight barrel.

I had an Xring that had some issues out the gate as accuracy was not there. I got excellent customer service from them and even though I think they only guaranteed 1" @ 50 and I was getting that, they agreed to look at it. When I got it back from them it was shooting 1/2" @ 50 yards and had changed, I believe, the wrap around the barrel. I eventually sold it to help fund a Kidd build at the time. I had purchased and put a Kidd trigger in the TacSol and that did help out. But for the money I had hoped to get better accuracy than I did.

Perhaps these gentlemen are doing something special to the action and barrel that will make them super. I look forward to seeing some reports on them.

Both of the Kidds my wife and I have are shooters. For a semi-auto that can consistently shoot in the mid 3's and sometimes better, we have been very happy with them. For mine, I have 4 different barrels. The 20" heavy non-threaded which is supposed to the be the most accurate. A 20" fluted barrel, the 18" fluted and the 16" Ultralight. I am sure if I really kept some detailed records of the shooting along with the all the ammo testing for each I would see maybe a bit of difference but all including the ultralight shoot .3's. Unless I go from the 20" heavy to the 16" ultralight I usually don't even have to adjust the scope and even then its very minimal.

I really love the looks of this new gun though. If it was 1/2 the price and guaranteed at least MOA @ 50, I'd probably swoop one up.

It does have me thinking about another Kidd in a stock like that though.

Back from my ramblings: TacSol did do me right and went over and beyond for me. Their customer service was excellent.

Holy crap that’s way too much for what it is unless they are working over the barrels and actions.

For the price you can almost get a vudoo and you can snag a Begara/tikka/CZ/RimX etc... that will shoot better.

I’ve owned Kidd barrels and TacSol barrels and TacSol barrels are nothing special in my experience.

They should have used Kidd barrels or even Beyer or Feddersen. Any of those three have a better chance of shooting decent than thr TacSol and the trigger on the last TacSol x ring i shot was the same as a BX trigger and not as nice as a Kidd or a VQ trigger.

I wish them luck but I would be shocked if they sell very many.

Wonder if they'd be willing to customize the build and let you choose a different barrel? An Xring receiver is just classic 10-22 slip-fit, so in theory it shouldn't be a problem.

It wouldn’t be a problem to replace but I would have thought they would have done their research and used a better barrel.

If they wanted a unique receiver then TacInc or Magnum research would have worked or even CST with its last round bolt hold open capability.

Triggers also should be a Kidd 2stage or at a minimum at Kidd single stage or VQ200

Yep I have all Kidd SS triggers now except for one Brimstone trigger, which would be next choice after Kidd, not VQ.

I've owned Tacsol barrels several years ago, got better than avg accuracy and better than OEM, but never on par with my Green Mountain, Fedderson, or Kidd barrels. Heck not even Whistle Pig. Only Tacsol barrel I currently have, which is a nice barrel for its purpose, is a 10-22 takedown setup that includes the Magpul 10-22 takedown stock. That's an excellent LW barrel/stock combo for a takedown.

Seems like Tacsol's big thing is being LW (which is why they're a popular choice in a lot of aftermarket takedown setups), but they're not the first choice that comes to mind in any kind of an accurized build. Just sayin.

ETA: If I were gonna ask for a customization of this build to WTO--again it's all hypothetical since .22lr budget is blown big-time --it would be something like..

- Keep the Manners stock
- I'd be fine with the Xring receiver--I like Kidd for aftermarket, but been wanting to try an Xring, they have some nice features.
- Kidd single stage or Brimstone trigger job on a Ruger BX trigger group
- Kidd ULW barrel

Now THAT setup would still be LW, and probably accurate too.

They had an awesome price point and features on the BXR002 (carbon fiber 10/22 clone). But the guns have been plagued with feeding issues (magazine seem to be the culprit) and accuracy has been so so from reports.


I personally want one and love the fit of the BXR002. To the point I might buy one if I find it on a deal and drop a better barrel on it and a Kidd trigger.

+1 the BXR does look interesting. It must be harder to build a quality 10-22 clone than it looks. Seems like most places that try, other than Kidd, have struggled to get it right.

There have been about half a dozen that have done it pretty well besides Kidd

Any of these have done pretty good.

In Begara defense. Lots of the cycling issues were magazine related and when guys used Ruger magazines then the issues were solved.

Accuracy wise they have it down on the B14r so whatever chamber band headspace they have on that should also be on the bxr002.

The paddle release was nice touch too

^Most clones aren't thriving today and almost nobody wants one, Kidd, VQ and Tacsol may be the only real exceptions. Ruger owns market at the low end, Kidd at the high. Volquartsen knows how to build a reliable rifle but they've priced themselves out of the markets and Kidd is higher quality AND better priced. Nobody else is even viable and competitive, they're either unreliable, overpriced, or both. Which is why most of the clones have faded.

ETA: Tacsol is one of the few exceptions (along with VQ, but again they have the 'value' and pricing issue), but they are sort of like the mid-range in between Ruger and Kidd. And honestly, it even took them some years and debugging to get X-ring receiver right and reliable, and some would say they still don't have it.

I have two TS X-Ring receivers that I use for Sportsmans Team Challenge and Silhouette. After TS figured out the correct heat treat for firing pins, they are awesome. I am very happy with mine.

Now if only Manners would start cranking out more 10-22 stocks...
