So, I have an XLR chassis on order for my T/C .308 Venture and want to upgrade my glass. The action currently has the two piece Weaver mounts and I have been running a Vortex Crossfire (I know, entry level). So I want to upgrade to better glass (probably still Vortex) like a Viper HS or ELR . Should I put a 20 MOA one piece mount on as well if I want to get out to 800+ yards, and if so, is there a one piece mount that will fit onto the action without gunsmithing required?

Yes, if you are looking to go long range a 20 degree base will help. Check out Ken Farell about the bases they make them for almost every model and they make them to just fit the action and will not go over and interfere with the XLR chassis. I had them to one for my Savage and it was great. They are about $114 last time I checked so they are not cheap but not overly expensive either. Hope this helps.

One other question. Can I just buy any "off the shelf" one piece pic-rail or Weaver mount and match drill the holes to fit my action? My next door neighbor has a drill press and I am a pretty fair mechanic so I don't have aproblem doing it but just wondered if this would not be accurate.
