Why do I have a strong suspicion that they're actually 3D models with lowered opacity? I'm having a hard time believing that they actually found someone with an x-ray machine that was willing to let them put loaded weapon into it for the sake of selling t-shirts online.

Your local bomb squad / EOD could easily x-ray guns with their equipment. You put the x-ray source one one side of the object and the "film" on the other side and shoot your pulses. If the gun goes kaboom (which is unlikely at best) you lose a sheet of "film" I think welding inspectors have similar equipment as well.
.....after all that I just read the page on their site where they claim they put the guns in a CAT scanner. ....I don't know enough about those to know if that's safe or not. I'm pretty sure they're outrageously expensive though.
