Ok, so I have been reading all I can find and I am down to two scopes. Weaver Tactical and Vortex PST.
The rifle is a 700 Tactical in .308 that will be used for everything, including hunting deer here in Southeast MO, where many shots are within 20-30 yards. So, of these two scopes, which one would be a better "do it all" scope, or are there other options I should be looking at ? TIA

Re: Yes, another what scope do I need question

If deer hunting with shots at 20- 30 yds is a high priority, I'd be looking at my options and picking the one with the widest field of view. Otherwise, you'll either have a hard time picking up your target or only see hair, both of which could lead to lost opportunities. Just my .02 worth.

What's your max range you plan on shooting? Something like the SS 3-9 which has a field of view of 33.2-14.51 @ 100 yds would work well.

Also, if you can wait a few months, there are new things coming out from Vortex - 2.5-10 FFP and SWFA - something between 3-9 and 5-20 later this year.

You may want to consider putting priority on your low end of magnification first and foremost for those 20-30 yd. shots. While plenty of magnification is nice, you don't want to be limited by too high of a low end either. Something to consider.

I've owned both... IMHO the glass in the Vortex isn't as good as the Weaver.. Actually the only thing I prefer about Vortex is that it comes with a sunshade. You're really only giving up zero stop but your gaining better quality in glass and just over all fit.

I have the Weaver EMDR.

Re: Yes, another what scope do I need question

Looks like we are on the same thinking here. I am too stuck between the two. But due to better glass, I'm leaning towards the Weaver. Tough choice between the two.

Yes, I noticed the Vortex with FFP is $200 more than the Weaver. I was also thinking that the 3x on the Weaver may be better for deer hunting .

Re: Yes, another what scope do I need question

Weavr is great.. I have (2) grand Slams and they work great..I've had them below zero and dropped them and still droped a deer at 175yds.

you cant go wrong with Weaver.

Rember you don't need a $3000 S&B to shoot a deer at 400yds. or an elk at 700...

12" min kill zone on a deer and 24" on an elk..

Re: Yes, another what scope do I need question

I really like my Weaver Tactical, but I was going through the same ordeal a few weeks ago. The Zero Stop on the PST would be nice though. I haven't used a Vortex so I can't really comment, but I can't imagine it wouldn't be just as good. Basically is the price difference worth the zero stop? I still don't know yet, but I gambled "no" and so far I don't regret it (but haven't shot past 100 yards yet).

Re: Yes, another what scope do I need question

Sorry to add to the choices, but I think it's worth a look. Liberty Optics has the Bushnell Elite Tactical 3-12 FFP mil/mil on sale for $769. IMHO I think it's better than either of the others (overall). I have had two of the elites. The 6-24 currently sits atop my 700 AAC SD. The glass is as good as Japanese glass gets. It's not as good as my IOR's glass, but it's $1k cheaper, so it shouldn't be. I don't need zero stops when using mil turrents. 11.9 mils gets me to 1k yards. That's not a whole lot of counting. The only edge I would give to the PST is it's reticle. All three are good scopes, but I would go with the Elite.
