I know there are many, many threads on the topic already and I've been though most of them, but it seems that the "perfect" length is dependent on many factors (e.g., caliber, twist rate, intended use, max range, etc.) and I don't fully comprehend all the nuance. So, I thought I'd throw out what I'm thinking about and see if I can stir up some conversation.
I have a Tikka T3x Lite in .308 with a 20" barrel (1:11 twist). I want to have it cut down and threaded so I can have my Gemtech Tracker on it full time (8" overall length). This will be a hunting rifle for brushy country so I'd like to keep it short and handy without compromising too much velocity and range. Max range will be 500-600 yards on small deer/goat sized game. I want to shoot a solid copper bullet. I'm thinking something in the 150-165gr range. I was going to start with the GMX just because I've had such good experience with the ELDM and ELDX. I don't reload. I typically shoot the 178 ELDX in my other 308, but I've read that if you switch to copper you might need to go to a lighter bullet because copper is less dense so it'll actually be of similar dimension to the heavier lead bullets...blah blah...BC...blah...blah...stabilization... As I said, I don't really know all that much about internal ballistics or reloading.
So, what's a good length for this application? I'll throw out a straw dog...tell me why 17" isn't the right choices. Assuming 0.5" of barrel goes into the suppressor, I'd be at about 24.5" overall. My other 308 has a 22" barrel plus a brake, so it's probably in that neighborhood and I don't find it unwieldy.
Thanks for you thoughts!
