I don't contribute much around here, just steal all the helpful information.

I figured I would share my newest rifle. I went with a 700 xcr in 300WM. I put an A5 on it and a Badger rail. The scope is just a bushnell that I took off my SPS-V until I can swindle my way by means of trading into a mark 4 or nightforce (anyone need a blackwater tactical sig

.

Here is a picture of a 5 shot group with wal mart remington ammo, if it was a 3 shot you can see the bottm three would be quite respectable. I doubt match ammo would help much at 100 yards. Without a DBM I dont see how you guys can get into the tight goupings after coming off to load 2 more.

It is still a respectable rifle, and appears to shoot well. I wouldn't necessarily call it a budget build, but it definitely isn't a full custom. As long as it shoots well, I wouldn't mess with it (something that I can't do myself).

Thank you, It hasnt been bed either. I dont think I will unless I notice issues. I also forgot to add my break in process, I know people are sticklers about their break ins. It went like this
-shoot 30 rounds, put in case
-get home, put dip in mouth, clean rifle.

It was a tight budget, mostly I had to sell shit I dont use or need and use money to build! It was well worth it.

I wanted to update this thread. It is no longer a budget build... oh well, shit happens

as it sits:
700 xcr tactical lr 300wm
McM a-5 forest
Badger base
Badger medium rings
Leupold Mk4 64665 (thanks A-train)
Harris bipod
Will put a Badger thuster on when I find one in stock 5/8

The problem is since I have switched it around a bit I can't shoot for shit anymore... I suppose a muzzle break would help. I'm lucky to hold an inch 100yd but at 300 It gets a consistently just under a minute. With the pictured group at .865. Too bad for flyers... Again, I dont feel this is in anyway the rifles fault. I just need more time with it.

Put your old scope back on it just to make sure your new Leupy doesnt have a wondering zero. And check to make sure your rings and base have not come loose.

Good call USMCj, I will give that a try this week.

Re: Edit: Budget build winmag, budget gone astray

The rifle is double grouping, even in the first photo posted. This is typically an ammunition issue and not a scope issue.

When you have the brake installed request that the crown be touched up, at least the chamfer if nothing else.

Bedding will certainly help as it will keep the platform stable in the stock and help resist movement.

These little things will aid the accuracy but I'd also try different ammo if your not hand loading.

Nice looking rifle BTW

Re: Edit: Budget build winmag, budget gone astray

You know, thats interesting you bring that up, just about all of my groups yesterday, 6 I think, had some sort of odd shaping to them, typical 2 or 3 about touching then flyers off in no mans land.

None of the typical circular groups I get shooting .308. The ammo is Black hills 190gr. I do not reload, however I have spoken with the Custom Dallas reloads gentleman and will be having some 208 Amax loads worked up. That should help when I start reaching out past 300yards anyways.

Re: Edit: Budget build winmag, budget gone astray

I doubt its the ammo, first try to switch out the scope, if that doesnt do it, send you rifle to a smith to have it bedded. Roscoe does one hell of a stress free bedding job, talk to him about his prices.

More times than not, ammo is the issue. Granted, scopes & bases can and do move. Some scopes even have a hard time holding POI from session to session but, from the looks of the groups from first to last......this is a classic case of an ammunition issue but I'm not ruling out bedding either.

The first group tells me the rifle is s a shoter. Bed it and work through the ammo and I bet it'll be a tack driver.

NICE ... sounds like my break ins ... I generally burn 2 boxes and call it at 40 ...

The build is coming along nicely though
