Ok,

So, I woke up with a huge itch to devirginize my GAP-Surgeon .243. Since I didn't have any match ammo on hand, I had asked George recently if Winchester Power Point 100 grain ammo would harm the rifle. He basically said no, but for me not to expect the rifle to shoot to its full potential. Fair enough, right?

Well, I took the rifle and scope out for a spin and shot a box of 20 Winchester Power Point 100 grain ammo out to 100 yards. My first sighter was high and to the left. I adjusted the scope, and the second sighter was low and right. Mils, mils, not moa, idiot. This was the first time ever shooting a mil/mil scope. Made a final adjustment and shot the remaining 18 rounds. I was very pleased to say the least. Considering that it shot as well as it did with crappy factory ammo, I can't help to wonder what it will do with reloaded 115 DTAC ammo.

George, you were right. The rifle didn't shoot to its full potential but it does hint to its extreme accuracy and precision potential.

I know there is a lot of debate about breaking-in a barrel and that it's really not necessary, but I did it anyways. It took me a little over two hours to shoot the 20 rounds. I was way too gentle with it. It reminded me of when I held my baby boys for the first time.

Hey, Gonzalez

It was pure luck. I doubt I'll be able to shoot like that with the same ammo again. I'm glad it shot like it did, though.

It's a 24” Bartlein (23” from recoil lug) with MTU contour at 1.250x2.750 to .930 muzzle. 1 in 7.5 twist. 11 degree target crown. Chambered for .243 Winchester, 115grain DTAC bullets.

Papa, that is one beautiful rifle!! Very good shooting too! I for one look forward to a few more pics, maybe at the range?
Congrats on your new shootin' iron.

I agree. I've already had someone email me that it's BS. Honestly, I didn't take my camera to the range because I wasn't expecting the rifle to shoot a slightly over an inch group with off-the-shelf ammo. Keep in mind that this rifle is set-up for 115 DTAC bullets, not 100 grain factory hunting ammo. And it never occurred to me to use my phone. So, I'll definitely post range pictures the next time around.

Re: You were right, George! You were right!

Papa,
I had a 300 Winnie that shot 150gr power points into a single hole similiar to yours. The naysayers will scoff, but a well built rifle shoots many things well which is a testimony to the GAP excellence. Might not be bench rest, but good to know you can grab a box at Wally World and put food on the table...

Re: You were right, George! You were right!

Why would factory ammo harm a barrel?

Winchester PP ammo is a very good hunting round and will quite often shoot very well.

A very nice stick and excellent shooting, I had very good results with 100 grain nosler boattails and H4350.

Remember to use your reticle to measure than make adjustments, You would have sighted in in half as many rounds

I was kind of curious about that myself. What made you think factory ammo would be an issue in the rifle?

It's either that or I'm just that good shooting off the bench.

My ignorance.
