Hello everyone.Long time lurker 1st time poster. The time has come to make my rifle purchase that will be used mainly for punching paper in the 200-500 yard range. I was going to go with a AR build but since I have not gone to the range in years I figured a bolt gun would be better to teach myself better shot placement and breathing knowing that I will only have 4-5 shots at the ready instead of 30.

Any thoughts on these 2 why pick one over the other? Price range is about 800-1k range.I am open to other rifles but I do want to stick with the .308. Weight is not a issue since I will not be lugging this thing around besides I tend to like the heavier rifles

The scope I have to mount it is a Mark 2 3-9x40mm Hunter Riflescope

Your thoughts comments are welcome

Here are the 2 I am looking at.

The down-side to the SPS is the stock. You'll want to replace it. That bumps the price up considerably (depending on which stock you choose). Personally, I have yet to see Ruger put something out besides the 10-22 that was worth looking at. You may want to consider either a good used Remington 5R or Remington PSS. Savage also makes a good rifle with a McMillan stock you can find in this price range. My $0.02... FWIW

Common dilemma.

Fact is, the two compose an ensemble; each with good reasons to possess. In the end, the logic dictating acquiring both will become undeniable.

But first things first. Go with neither, and develop the skills first. A simple bolt repeater .22LR, like a Savage MKIIF, until you can consistently cover ten at 50ft with a quarter, and then move up to the C/F bolt gun. AR last, and far from least.
