Don't know if this is in the right place. But would like to see, hear about guns built for your young worriers. I'm thinking about a stevens 200 build for my daughter. .223 or 300 black out??

Re: Youth builds

Worriers or warriors? My limited experience shows that worries increase (not decrease) with age. Anyway, my sons will be rocking .22LRs until they can comfortably shoulder a 700 youth .243win. That is enough for any whitetail deer in our area. If they shoot it enough to need a rebarrel then great. I'll have a donor action for a custom build. If they don't then I'm not out a huge investment.

What are you planning to shoot with the rifle? If target practice, then I would go with the cheaper to shoot round. If you have an application in mind, then choose accordingly. If you need an excuse to buy/build another rifle (and who among us does not?) the choose the caliber you like best.

Then again for a young daughter, the .223 may recoil less than a 300 blackout.

Re: Youth builds

I'm thinking about this for my son (almost 7) so any input would be great.

I'm also thinking a 223 bolt would be a nice round for a starter that won't recoils much, will be fun to shoot, and cheap to feed. Plus with heavier bullets can reach out to 600 for range fun and kill deer at moderate ranges of 100-200 yards. I figure that would serve him well until he's old enough for a .260 / 6.5 creed like mine.

Re: Youth builds

My oldest son is 8 and shoots my A5 stocked scalpel 223ai. With all of the spacers removed it is still a little long. I need to order a lighter and shorter lop stock for him. He has shot it out to 600 a couple of times.

Specs:
591 action
A5
Krieger #14, 24", 8tw
Nightforce f1
Jackson trigger
Thunderbeast suppressor
80 Amaxes at 2900 loaded on dillon 550

I think an 8 twist 223 tikka would be a winner as well.

Re: Youth builds

My daughter started off with a Cricket 22LR at 5yrs old. At 7yrs old I built her a 20" M4 with a compensator, ergo grip, and collapsible stock. With the rifle length gas system and the above listed items it fit her perfect and she could dump rounds all day with comfort.

Now that she is 9yrs old I have two builds which should work well for her. She is tall and has long arms but she's light for her age so recoil is my main concern. First build is a .260 with McMillan A5 with a Sendero profile 26" barrel. Recoil on this should not be an issue but to reduce it more I have a Gemtech .30cal can for it.

The 2nd build is being done off a Rem 700 action that belonged to her grandpa. It's being built by Jared at APA. The stock is an AICS with Viper Skins and it will be in 7mm mag using a Broughton barrel with Jared's Muzzle brake which he advised me would reduce recoil to the point that she could shoot it with no problems.

I figure with these two builds she will be able to hunt any N. American game with dad into adult years.
