I've had my sako TRG22 for about 8 months now. Love the gun and it shoots great. Have some junk tasco on it just because I didn't have much left over after the $4,000 in rifle and acessories.
Was going to get a USO but then gf suckered me into getting her a rock that i had to buy from indiana jones.

So she bought me a Zeiss conquest 6.5-20X50 rapid Z 1000. They messed up and shipped the Rapid Z varmint. Both cost the same and the rapid Z 1000 seems too busy for me and I normally shoot 200-600.

Anyone think that I would be better off sending back the Z varmint for the 1000 or mildot?

Re: Zeiss Rapid Z or mil dot for Sako TRG22

I have the Zeiss 6.5 x 20 in Mil-dot, and just picked up a Leupold 8.5 x 25, with the Varmint reticle, (which is very similar to the Zeiss varmint reticle).
For shooting long distance or small targets, the Mil-dots are almost too big, on the other hand, on the Varmint reticle the posts are very thin, which is good, but also takes some getting used to.
As far as the Z-1000, I think it is way toooo busy for the average shooter, the only thing missing is one of those bubble levels in the bottom LOL. So my vote would be for the varmint reticle that you have.

I would check out the Rapid-Z calculator that Zeiss has on their website. You can put in your load characteristics like bullet weight, fps, BC and it will tell you what the holdover distance is for each spot on the reticle. If you're shooting a .308 I would suggest the 1000 over the varmint.

Re: Zeiss Rapid Z or mil dot for Sako TRG22

I emailed optics planet and some other places and they immediately say 1000 since its made for the .308 but i would only get a chance to shoot out of the top third of the scope.
I either shoot targer, groundhog or crows so I thought it should be good enough. Now just have to get some warne rings & torque wrench.

I shouldnt have spent 13k on a diamond and i could have had two scopes stacked on top of eachother

I have the Z-1000 on my TRG-22 and love it.Give yourself a little time and I think you would too.If you are 2650 to 2700 you will be on with that reticle. Im using 168 Blackhills and it is dead on.

Yea Doctor Jones was busy I did the same thing. She bought me a Hensoldt I bought her earrings of comparable value. 13K! bud I think she came out better than you on that one. I hope she's wearing nothing but a bow to bed for the next year

I like the Idea of the 1000, but 90% of the time i shoot at 200 yards which is the longest range close to my house. and i dont have a hog field longer than 500. i dont want to be stuck in the top of the scope the whole time.
I really wanted TMR FFP. but it looks like the varmint is 2moa markings.
ive been shooting nosler 168's with nosler brass and RL 15 off of a $80 dollar tasco and i have been putting 5 rounds in a quarter at 200...... but obviously with the tasco... every other time i take the gun out of the pelican case center is a new area
