Hi guys, i have just picked up a Mauser 98 sniper with a zeiss zeilsechs scope.

Rifle looks great and both it and scope are in great shape, however i have no idea how to work this scope. Can anybody help me out.

It seems to have a elevation turret but no windage (although the quick release mount may have windage on it)

Thanks in advance

Ewen

Re: Zeiss zeilsechs

Sir,
If there is a square projection on either side of the rear ring at the base level, that is your adjustment. They came with a little "lug" wrench.

Re: Zeiss zeilsechs

I will have a look for that, dont remember seeing it, but there is a screw head on either side at the back.

Do you have any idea about the elevation turret, there seems to be a grub screw at the back, however even when i loosen this, i still cannot move the turret.

Re: Zeiss zeilsechs

Ewen - I can send you a copy of the manual for the ZF39 scopes when I get back to the UK next week.....or if you can bag a copy of BBotW - Snipe Variations it is in there. PM me if you want me to mail you a photocopy.

The ZF39 scopes only have elevation adjustement,

The only way to adjust windage on the SSR mount is by coarse adjustment of the two screws on the rear post (but you need to loosen off the screw underneath the front post or you will bend the tube on the scope and adjustment will be impoassible).

On the LSR, there should be a small tool that accompanies the mpount for adjusting windage.

Re: Zeiss zeilsechs

Ewen - just re-read your OP.

I'm going to say you have the Short Side Rail - only question is which version. Not that it matters that much as the principle of operation is the same for each version....they only differ in the number of screws holding the thing in place!

The last iteration, the v3 had two pins and three screws tapped into the left side of the receiver wall, these screws also had locking screws, plus there was a screw down lever on the top of the mount and.....don't you just love these Germans......a locking lever at the side.

This is the best pic I have at the moment...sorry it shows the wrong side but at least you can see the side lever and the top lock

However, despite all the belt and braces designed to lock and keep the thing in place (which didn't really achieve the objective - mine is clamped down so hard using a molegrip, that wild horses won't move it....so much for QD!!)......the only inbuilt windage adjustment are the screw either side of the rear post on the mount itself (the big one in the pic abce)

If you are missing any of the list of screws above....you have an earlier version SSR. Which one will depend on which bits you have.

Pic shows Zielvier/SSR combo fitted to my byf41. Zielsechs at top is in process of being mounted in an LSR to a byf43
