I have an SWFA 10x42 mil quad and I've been told to pick up zero Stop shims for it. I've seen a lot of good marksmanship questions here and not many stupid ones. Let me fix that.

A cursory Google search and search of this site tells me that zero stop means that if I forget to turn my turret back to zero and later have to figure out where it is, it will be easier. How it works though and what it is exactly is still a mystery to me. Anyone want to chime in?

Zero stop keeps you from dialing "down" much past your zero. You can dial up as much as you want, and can then dial back to the stop without having to count turns. Depending on design might go a little below your zero, but less than a full turn, so you can locate zero pretty easily. Steps go something like: zero rifle at chosen distance, set zero stop (procedure depends on your scope), and adjust elevation knob to show "0" as current elevation. Once you actually do it you realize it is not as complicated as it sounds and makes life easier.

Thanks everyone that helps a ton! Apnea, it seems like something that is harder to describe than if you just watched it. Watching the installation video on youtube helped as well as reading the gunsmagazine.com article above which actually explains why you might need them pretty well. I think I will pony up for those shims.
