Dope shooting uphill - tell me why I'm wrong

Hi guys – During the Frank/Marc show in PA a few weeks back, we all found that, at range, our true dope was less than what the weaponized math predicted and that the delta between dope at increasing range was not incrementing up as we would expect. The dope kind of flattened out at range.

Now this is in central (maybe a bit western) PA and the shooting line is in the valley and once past about 600 yards, the range started to go quite steeply up the side of the valley.

Frank explained what we were seeing as being a result of our shooting uphill and he used a diagram something like this which seemed to make a lot of sense at the time. Looking at this, it seemed clear to us at the time that yeah, the horizontal distance is less so that’s less of an horizontal distance for gravity to effect the drop of the bullet hence why our dope was coming out less than expected (and yeah, I believe we can discount any impact of a greater loss of velocity from going uphill as that would increase our dope and not reduce it from expected as we found and as Frank explained).

Now, I’m sure that Frank and Marc are right and I am not. And that this is why most good LRF will give you horizontal distance as well as slant range, if so chosen.

But as I thought about this more, I don’t understand why they are right (yeah, ole’ Baron23 asking why, why, why once again! haha).

The acceleration from gravity is defined as 9.8 m/s/s (9.8 meters per second per second, right). Note, there is nothing in here about horizontal distance. The absolute displacement resulting from this acceleration is purely a function of the time period that the bullet is exposed to gravity….that is, time of flight.

So, looking at the diagram above, I’d like to use a very simple example. 1,000 yard range target and a bullet going 3,000 fps (1,000 yds per second, right?). Also, for simplicity, let’s assume it’s a laser and there is no parabolic curve to the flight path and that the velocity remains constant across the time of flight.

So, a bullet shot purely in the horizontal will take 1 second to go 1,000 yards and the resulting drop will be 9.8 meters based on gravity accelerating the drop for 1 second.

Where I’m confused is that when shooting uphill the bullet also has a flight path of 1,000 yards to the target so it should also be exposed to the acceleration of gravity for 1 second and therefore the drop should be the same…i.e. 9.8 meters. But of course, it’s not.

Now, I’m really confident that Frank/Marc are correct and that there is a flaw in my thinking on this….but I don’t know what it is.

Any view on this…any explanation for why I’m wrong?

George Soros Drops $1M To Stop City of Austin Hiring Police to Combat Rising Crime

Title pretty much says it all.

Austin used to be such a quiet, clean, safe little town. Now, the commie City Council ass-stains that are in Soro's pockets make me want to disinfect my tires whenever I return from there.

Rough weekend

So my wife takes our 15 yr old chocolate lab for a walk . All good dog is happy , sniifin shit and waggin tail . As they walk back up to the house my dog drops over dead . Wife managed to lean far enough to knock on the window alerting me .
Trixie was technically my Daughter's but she was my buddy . First dog in a while I hadn't gotten for hunting . Sorry I hadn't gotten a female 20 years earlier . She was an absolute Luv , true Beta female . Watched over everyone , gave attention and followed the Alpha Female ( my wife ) like she was attached . She passed Friday after dinner .
So today I forced my self to go to the pistol range . Needed to get out of my head . After the range brother calls and said Dad is assisted living and not long for this world . So I get local and info . An hour later Text " Dad died " .
I have been TKO'D twice , lights on and nobody home in my fighting endeavors . Feeling TKO'D .

Barrel threading

I do not understand this current trend of threaded barrels! It seems that most of the bolt action 22s I'm seeing or hear of being ordered have or will have threaded barrels. In over 50 yrs of shooting I have never owned a threaded barrel 22lr. Never had a need to suppress a 22. I suspect it's mainly due to to the current tactical fad. Tactical this tactical that. I'm currently looking for tactical underwear. I'm sure someone makes it. This is for you new shooters thinking about buying a new gun or having one built. Forget the barrel threads. I does nothing for accuracy. Just the opposite. If you remove metal from the muzzle end of a barrel it opens up the bore. That's the last thing you want if you're trying to squeeze every bit of accuracy from a barrel! Case in point. Anschutz actually leaves extra metal on the muzzle end of their match grade barrels. Custom remfire smiths taper lap barrels for improved accuracy. How many pure benchrest 22s have you seen with threaded barrels? If you need a suppressor in order to shoot a 22 in the area you live by all means thread. If not forget that tactical BS.

Old eyes and good reticles

I am looking for a new scope in the <$4k range that will provide me with better reticle view of the hash marks (mils). Recent eye exam showed no problems, but I'm noticing that it is harder to see those hash marks in a FFP scope.

Would I be better off with a SFP scope and Mil lines or dots. I'm considering the NF ATACR 56mm lines, but am open to all suggestions as to another manufacturers. The scope will be used to max. distance of 1K yards. Other things I should consider?

Thanks

CCI 41 primers

Normally I use CCI 450 (Mag SRP) and BR-4 for my 6.5 CM. As I was Very Low a friend gave me a box of CCI 41 out of a brick he had just bought. Tried them and found very small difference between the 3. However I did have one failure (out of 60). I received a notice from Brownell that the CCI 41 were back in stock so I ordered a brick. I've used 27 so far - One took 2 tries before igniting, and one I tried 3 time - never fired.

While I wait 2 -> 3 min before opening the chamber, it still leaves me apprehensive. On the range, only effect is on nerves - Because of these failures these will never see the light-of-day deer hunting. Subsequently I have a brick of BR-4 coming Monday.

Not the rifle, as I have NOT had a single failure with older 450's, or BR-4's, or my newly received Fed 210M (LRP). On the failed CCI-41's the indent on the primer looked Normal.

What is this M24?

So I have ended up down this rabbit hole of M24 isms. And while I know a lot about the Mk 13 having built one I know damn little about M24 so hopefully someone here can help.

Buddy is looking at this rifle at a LGS in the Midwest. Seller wants 4K for it. The information is all over the map about whether this is a refurbished gun that was an action and barrel etc. that was surplus. Not just a return stock with a new action put in it.

It also predates, I believe, the eurooptic m24 offering where they put together some 500 guns for about $3000 each. Saw them advertised here on the Hide.

This gun has sat in the LGS owners personal collection for some 10 years. Story is, It was ordered by a retired army officer But when it came into the LGS the buyer needed money and sold it to the gun store owner who has had it in his personal collection. It *might* have come from CMP. Because the CMP name is being used by the owner as part of his sales pitch. But I have no idea if that could be correct.

Should my buddy jump on this, run away, etc. What is this exactly? I post pictures with serial number and box which matches the rifle.

There is a pelican case with the gun but I am told that was added by the LGS owner.

FYI currently fitted with some kind of Burris scope that it did not come with. Added by LGS owner

Other things to note: the stock is used and painted. It is definitely a field used stock.

I’ve got no skin in this. Except I am very confused by the whole M 24 “what is real and what is not” world. Like I said I never got into them or the 40s. Just the mark 13.

My personal recollection is that M24s Got destroyed not surplussed. Kind of like the Mark 13s where the stocks made it out, but the actions and barrels were destroyed. But that does not mean that some didn’t get out or somehow end up back at Remington or at CMP. Like I said I just don’t know the minutia of M 24s.

But I’m pretty sure the experts here can sort this out pretty quick.

Cheers, Sirhr

Dead Air XENO vs TBAC CB vs DT

I just got my first suppressor (Dead Air Nomad TI direct thread) and am already looking for my next one or if I want to change the connection on this one. Not looking to change because I don't like what I have. Just wondering if there is something better. With that in mind I was hoping for some insight on a few things:

1) What is the advantage of a XENO or CB mount system vs direct thread. I was originally just planning to use the current suppressor on one rifle but am now thinking of threading some other barrels. Is the only reason not to do direct thread because you have the potential to screw up the threads on the rifle? Do the other mounting systems make it more repeatable when you take it on and off? I do take it on and off to clean and obviously will be coming on and off if I switch to different rifles.

2) I feel like I have a good sense of what the XENO system is, but haven't really found much on the TBAC CB system, even though I know it is pretty common. Are these similar systems? Which do you think is better? I am thinking of doing an ULTRA 7 for my next can but don't want to go TBAC if the XENO mounting system is significantly better than the CB. It is probably obvious from these options I am looking to stay as light weight as possible.

Thanks in advance. I love all of the expertise in this forum!

swfa scopes

these were well regarded here in the past. still true? thinking about getting one for my cz 455 which i only shoot at 100-200. struggling @ 200 for sure. can move current scope elsewhere. looking @ 12x and 16x. annoying that objective isn't 48 or 50 giving 3mm or 4mm exit. in FL so dark isn't a big issue but still. mk 4 is same 40mm obj and way more $. any other ideas for fixed power? 12x prob ok. 36x competion scopes just won't do for me. mirage an issue at > 16x for me. any other brands?

Rifle Scopes How are people finding Zero Compromise Scopes compared to other high-end brands

I am asking because we have not had a ZC scope, but had a customer want to trade one for another brand. I have read of the Nightforce and Austrian heritage. I am guessing that is Kahles? What I have read sounds good.

For those who have used ZC, what would you compare it to? Kahles, Nightforce, Minox, Nightforce ? For those who love it, what would you improve, why do you like it?
