Needing Sage Advice on a Season of Failed Load Development

Hey,

I needs some fatherly and or sage advice on trying to find/develop loads for a few firearms. I have spent a great deal of time this whole past season trying to dial in loads, using velocity ladder testing, and I don't feel like I have really achieved any headway towards success. It's frustrating spending time shooting velocity ladders through a magneto speed chrono and not really get any definitive progress forward. Part of me wants to just abandon load development all together and just shoot. That way it feels less like a chore and more like the hobby it's supposed to be.

I'll highlight the process I used to conduct a velocity ladder test that I did on a 20" SS barreled LMT DMR (AR-10)in 6.5CM on 23SEP2021:

Ladder load was using Hornady 147gr ELD-M, H4350, Hornady brass, CCI 200 primers.

1. Fire-formed Hornady brass deprimed, annealed, and FL-sized -3 thou bump using a Redding bushing die.

2. Brass neck was put through a .261" mandrel to set neck tension at 3 thou.

3. Trim, chamfer, debur brass.

3. Brass was steel pin tumbled and dehydrator dried.

4. Dried brass is primed on Dillon 550C.

5. H4350 Powder is dropped via Charge Master in .2 of a grain increments from Hodgdon.com's Min to Max suggested powder charges. Loaded 3 rounds per charge weight.

6. Hornady 147gr ELD-M Bullets are seated via Redding micrometer seating die on Forster Co-Ax Press. Bullets were seated a few thou from maximum magazine length of the Magpul Pmag.

I went ahead and shot all 69 rounds of this ladder over a magneto speed chrono and then took the data to MS Excel to graph it. The attached .jpg should show my chronograph results.
23SEP21Ladder.jpg

I know at this stage I should be looking for flat spots which are the velocity nodes to zero in on for future test. I feel like most of my results, and these ones in particular, are crap and unrevealing.

This is what I do identify here:

1. possible velocity node at 39.2-39.4gr(2524ish fps) & maybe something going on at 40.2 gr (2582fps).

2. very erratic velocity behavior between 39.4-40gr.

3. stead climb in velocity from 40.6gr-41.8gr (2609-2685fps) <- which is unfortunate, since I was hoping to grab a flat spot in the +2600fps areas.

Conclusions:

1. The powder charge limits, given by Hodgdon.com, were fine. The top charges resulted in only slight ejector smearing on the brass. No overly-flatten primers or blowouts.

2. Although some apparent flat spots were found, the velocities where they occurred seemed rather slow (2524 & 2582 fps).

3. The goal of locating a velocity flat spot at a speed above 2600fps wasn't achieved or found.

4. The averaging SD across all rungs of the ladder was 11. Usually speaking I was seeing low teens for SD and some single digits.

Questions to the Forum:

1. Am I missing something here with the collection of this data? Am I digging too deep?

2. Is the 147gr/H4350/AR10 combination just not working?

3. I'm having similar reloading blues with my bolt-actions. What do you recommend long term? LOL should I scrap load dev and just shoot!? I want to get to the next step here!

THANKS ALL!

Well this is different. Scope ring position isn't ideal

So I just got done mounting a leupold VX-5hd 3-15x56 it has a 3.8 eye relief on a 20 moa rail on a rem 700 action.

Couple things you should know I'm tall (6'5" but most of that heights in my upper body so long neck) USO rings. And in general I'm new to setting up optics.

I couldn't find numbers for USO rings so used what I saw online for others 50 in lbs for the base and 18 in/lbs for the rings.

To get no scope shadow in a straight line with the bore body position I ended up with a ring 10% off the rail on the front (as in on the last notch) and the rear ring is over the bridge.. I can bring them back and see through it but it quickly attains a moderate scope shadow doing that. So umm yeah.. advice? Get a new scope get a new 20 moa rail or shoot it it won't hurt anything?

Side note any reason not to use this throw lever with this scope? https://www.leupold.com/throw-lever-vx5hd-and-vx6hd Any that goes all the way around I think would force me into higher rings.

Help with muzzle threads on a expensive custom barrel

Hey guys. Hoping for a reality check. Buddy a mine just got a new barrel for his precision AR. He's gonna have two different uppers to do longer range AR15 shooting with. Anyway, this is the barrel for the 2nd upper and I've got some questions for the group if you will indulge me.

When he showed it to me the muzzle threading looked way off to me but I'm not a long gun guy. Here's what we're dealing with. It's threaded 5/8x24 and this is the exact condition as received.

I thought these threads looked way to flat but again I'm not an expert. I did a little looking around for how to measure threads and purchased a Brown and Sharpe thread wire set to measure the pitch diameter. Should be here in a few days. My friend intended to shoot this thing suppressed with his 30 cal direct thread thunder beast. I told him definitely not until we get some info on these threads.

I took a couple initial measurements and as it sits right now the threads are .604" OD. I'll get the pitch diameter dimension when the wire set gets here.

I also measured from the face of the muzzle to the shoulder and it was .668". I watched the video by Thunderbeast saying this dimension should be .600" to prevent the threads from protruding into the can and getting caked up making removal a pain.

Finally, here is a short video of the barrel with my friends TB can threaded most of the way on. Is this movement normal? My can is a CB mount so I have nothing to compare it to.

I don't want to say where he got the barrel from until they have a chance to address it. This barrel was expensive though, over $800 with a bolt and gas tube. I'm also concerned that the machining is so poor on the shoulder that even if the threads were ok it could shift the can one way or another as it seats.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Ring mark left on bullet from die?

Wondering if anyone has ran across this and has a solution? Keep getting this ring mark on the bullet. I am not a complete newb but am not as experienced as some and I can’t figure this out. Tip is not getting squished so I don’t believe it’s bottoming out in the die. I’ve not Run across this problem before but this is the first time I’ve loaded ELD bullets.

Afghanistan Refugees Upstanding Citizens

Biden's plan of killing 13 Marines was bad enough but he made sure to bring the best Afghanistan had to offer to sexual assault Military Members back on US soil. Why wasn't over watch running the bolt on these sub humans ?

GoFund Me for a tragic loss

I know Kevyn personally. He attended grade school with my daughter. I knew they were expecting (their 2nd) and then I found out the horrific news from my daughter as they have kept in touch over the years. The fundraiser is in place thanks to a close family friend out in Montana where he is stationed as a crew chief on a C-130. (Previous to that, he was with the 180th locally - there is a possibility some members may know him, or been stationed at one of these bases.) My family has donated and I asked a moderator if it would acceptable to share the link here with members in an attempt to help them reach that financial goal. The page is brief, but it is legit. Take a look and maybe you can help. I'm sure they would be grateful. I know that many members are prayerful and those prayers are also absolutely needed for this young family. Take care, be well and stay safe!

Whatever Happened to Quality?

Yes, this article is from March 7, 2008. Thirteen years ago the industry leaders were concerned enough to publish articles looking for solutions to this issue.

The last lines are words of wisdom:
Coburn stresses this point in no uncertain terms. "Morale is everything in quality," he says. "People want to do a good job, and we have to enable that."

Ft. Pickett, Virginia- Crisis Level

Gov. Black Face has been bringing in Afghan refugees to Ft. Pickett, near Blackstone, VA. A week ago, there were 10,800 refugees there, a place that only handles less than 3,000 people there on a good day. It's causing a lot of problems, there are some very sick people there and their hygiene habits are disgusting. The National Guard that's housed there has called in the State Police because they can't handle the situation.

What would make that better? Bring 10,000 more in. They are talking about having over 20,000 refugees there, a place that can't handle that volume. Word on the street is that Gov. Black Face has ordered a media blackout on it. It's a state owned facility so it's bypassing the Federal path.

Pretty disturbing that this is all being done with no oversight or input from anyone in our state, other than Gov. Black Face.
