Good "generic" bag setup for PRS beginner?

Hey Guys,

I finished up building a PRS rig and I'm planning to enter my first match. I've shot a bunch of F-Class, but never done anything PRS related. I'm so ignorant to this stuff, don't really know the right questions to ask; apologies in advance for that.

I have a rifle setup with an McMillan A6-PRS stock (no butt hook), with a 4" pic rail up front (none of the ARCA rail stuff). Bipod is one of those older atlas ones; it's not the wide stance type.

I really just need recommendations for a decent rear bag (squeeze bag I guess? I have a bunch of eared F-class heavy bags), and I assume some kind of generic front bag for shooting off randomly shaped obstacles/barriers?

I'm not trying to gear whore it up before I go out to my first match; I've seen a ton of guys make that mistake in F-Class. Just want the basics. Cost isn't a huge concern, but I'm not looking for bags made of shaman-blessed zebra skin either. Just a "jack of all trades" type setup that can let me test the waters to see if I even like shooting PRS.

I see a few years back folks were running a "game changer", but I've also heard about a "fortune cookie"? Not sure if it matters much, or if someone has invented a measurably better mousetrap in late 2021?

Any suggestions?

SOLD SOLD: Tikka Custom 6.5 Creedmoor Barrelled Action

UPDATE: Sold! Ty guys!

I'm selling my latest precision rifle barreled action! Due to economic reasons, I've decided to downsize my arsenal a bit. So I'm gunna have to let my latest build go.

I've only had it for a couple months. Only got to take it to the range one time. The chassis has been sold, but everything else remains.

-It's a Tikka T3x CTR Stainless Action that has been DLC/PVD coated by Chad at ClubCustom Guns (yes it's the smoothest bolt I've ever felt). So it's got an incredibly smooth black finish.
-Area 419 20moa Scope Rail
-Yo-Dave Trigger Spring installed
-Muzzle Brake is a Patriot Valley Arms Jet Blast (Nitride).
-Barrel is a 24in Carbon Fiber Wrapped Proof Research. 1-8 twist Sendero contour.

I only put 3 boxes of ammo through it to zero the scope and perform a proper break-in (I know break-in isn't needed but I'm OCD about all my stuff). I haven't taken calipers to the groups but they're easily 0.5moa with factory 140gr ELDM, probably smaller.

Update: Price on the BA is $1680 or best offer!

I accept PP, Venmo, Checks, MOs, or cash if face-to-face. For electronic options, buyer can either send via ff/gift or pay the 2.9% fee.

Let me know if you have any questions, the pics below are of the BA and chassis, but the chassis has been sold!
Thanks!

Another One Bites The Dust

Not sure what to make of this.
Gander Outdoors, the last local big box store in the Fredericksburg, VA area that sells guns (and hunting and fishing gear), as of Friday, 9/10 no longer sells guns, and hunting, and fishing gear. They’re going to sell, from now on, only RV gear, camping gear, and kayaking/boating gear. (So – I’m still a customer.
😉
)
Our local Dick’s ALSO doesn’t sell guns anymore. Or hunting gear. Or fishing gear. A few Wal-Mart stores in the area sell some very basic, low-end hunting and fishing supplies, and low-end firearms. But nothing anyone who is serious about their sport would entertain. So now, a serious fisherman or hunter in the Fredericksburg, VA area has to drive the 50 minutes-to-an-hour drive to either Cabela’s, Bass Pro, or Green Top to find big-box selection for firearms, hunting gear and fishing tackle. What the actual..(you know)..? The few small LGS's in the area will of course, improve their gun sales volume. But as far as fishing tackle and hunting gear, the local hunter sportsman has no where locally to turn.

To me, this seems like the ‘metrosexualizing’ of the Piedmont. Re-making Fredericksburg in the image of Northern Virginia. (
🤮
) Stores that formerly were central suppliers of goods for these manly pursuits in this area are now positioning themselves as suppliers of goods for people who “love the outdoors – but without the violence.” No one has publicly admitted that policy yet, but the trend is clear. Now, I can almost understand this trend when it comes to hunting – many of the millennials and gen-X-ers that head up and staff the corporate retailers are freaked out by the killing of Bambi’s dad. It’s not your fault – you watched Disney movies and believed that shit to be reality. I pity your gullibility, but don’t blame you.

BUT FISHING!?!?!? Fishing!?!?!? Really? What more traditional, wholesome, harmless (except to the fish) outdoor activity is there for fathers/mothers to pass on to and bond with their sons/daughters than fishing? What, is it not profitable!? BULL-_____!! Judging by the crowds I’ve seen in these stores and their checkout lines it HAS to be profitable. So, what then? Is it that businesses are shying away from anything that “might offend”?(Good luck with that) If so, that’s a very sad state of affairs for our culture. I grew up in an era(not so long ago, BTW) where many fathers(and some mothers) taught their children things like gun safety, marksmanship, outdoorsmanship, fishing, hunting, camping, etc. We learned to respect and value these things. I know there’s a very large segment of our population that STILL enjoys the outdoors. I experience this personally and frequently when I’m enjoying my own outdoor pursuits. There is no shortage of Americans (both legacy and recent arrivals) who draw their primary life enjoyment from the outdoors. Many of the skills that we learn in our various pursuits could help us survive in emergency, SHTF situations, be they instigated by nature or human miscreance. We mustn’t let these traditions fade away. The skills promoted are far too valuable.

Thankfully, (largely due to ‘Capitalism’ - strangely unpopular with today’s youth), the empty space left by the metrosexualization of Gander Outdoors and Dick's will likely soon be filled by other enterprising entrepreneurs. That’s one of the amazing things about our culture in America, the capitalist culture. Where there’s a need, there’s a profit to be made – and it won’t be long until someone comes along to fill that need and make bank off the mistakes of others. And when they do…I’ll be first in line.

Gas port off center questions

Hey guys, I’ve got a few questions for the more experienced AR builders.
I decided I wanted a MK12-ish clone so started collecting parts. Aero receivers, BCG and associated parts kits. A2 stock, rifle buffer and spring, lo-pro gas block and chrome tube, Knights rifle RIS, Allen engineering brake and collar to accept the AEM5 form 1 clone I had also planned. And finished with the problem child, a Ballistic Advantage 18” SPR Ops Inc. contour barrel
I used feeler gauges to determine gas block distance off the shoulder of the gas block journal and carefully lined up the gas block to top dead center and tightened the set screws. The rifle never cycled properly. Sometimes it would strip a second round off the mag, it would never lock back on an empty mag.
Wasted a lot of time messing with buffer weights and every different ammo I could get my hands on. Just wouldn’t work.
Unbelievably frustrated, I decided to put an AGB with a new tube on it. This time I used my dimple jig to be sure the gas block was properly aligned. This is when I finally notice that the gas port is not top dead center. It’s closer to 11 o’clock when looking down the barrel. I went ahead and installed the new AGB and headed to the range for testing. It is now truly semi-auto and locks back with all different ammo from tulammo, to PMC, win, etc and grains from 55-77gr. The BCG seems to move in the upper with no drag.
My questions are, do I need to be concerned with the canted gas block and associated angle of the gas tube where it enters the gas key? Who else makes an SPR contour barrel that I can depend on ports and index pins being in the same plane?
I sent a support ticket to BA, so I’m hoping to hear back from them. I know some folks don’t care for BA, but I have many AR builds using aero and BA and they all work just fine. I’m just curious of the groups thoughts on this.
Sorry for the mini-novel, but was hoping to get some guidance. Thanks for any tips and insights.

Rifle Scopes ZCO 527 scope long-term updates?

Anyone have long-term real world updates of the ZCO scopes? Specifically how well the turrets hold up (click feel and volume), tracking, adjustment ring smoothness, and especially the locking ring (does it index correctly)? I'm looking at buying one of the many listed on the PX without ever having gotten behind one and looking for user (rather than reviewer or retailer) feedback of longevity vs. Expectations at this price range.

Perhaps its purely coincidence? Maybe its "that time of year" for competitive shooters offloading last years gear? Or are these scopes not holding up to expectations after a while. However, since the start of September, I've seen a surprising number of ZCO scopes come up for sale in the PX and for something that retails at / above $4k I'm curious to know why ZCO are frequently coming up for sale relative to other alpha scopes in this range (Kahles, SB, Minox, Steiners, TT).

Atleast eight listings in the past 7 days and oddly a few of them of been de-listed (scam/spam?)

I'm also in the market for a SB PMII and it seems that ever since they went exclusive to EuroOptic in the US that the overall number of second-hand SB scopes posted has come down because the number of new scopes in circulation has come down. The EO monopoly on supply limits price competition (affordability) that comes from a free-er market.

What a real sports hero looks like...

August 8, 1982. A line drive foul ball hits a four year old boy in the head at Fenway. Jim Rice realized in a flash that it would take EMTs too long to arrive and cut through the crowd. He sprang from the dugout and scooped up the boy. He laid the boy gently on the dugout floor, where the Red Sox medical team began to treat him.

When the boy arrived at the hospital 30 minutes later, doctors said, without a doubt that Jim's prompt actions saved the boy's life. Jim returned to the game in a blood-stained uniform.

After visiting the boy in the hospital, and realizing the family was of modest means, he stopped by the business office and instructed that the bill be sent to him.

This is what a sports Hero looks like!

How do you find distances for long range shots in night?

Hi,
I just bought a new clip on night vision device (eotech) for my AI chambered in 338 lapua.

My aim is to take 1000+ yard shorts in the night. I believe the clip on night vision will be able to identify targets at extended ranges with correct IR illuminator. However one question I have not found an answer to, is how to find distance to targets in the night? Is my only option to use inbuilt reticle in the scope or are there smarter/betters devices/solutions? I do have a laser range finder, but not sure if that can work in the night.

thanks
harjeet

My 1st PRS rifle setup and what round to use.

First let me say I’m not an experienced long range shooter. I have had a couple of nice rifles and really enjoyed them and what they could do but the more chances I’ve had to see just how much I don’t know about shooting long range, really got me bitten by the bug and wanting to acquire and get good at this new skill. I should say I’m more of a buy once cry once kind of person and prefer to purchase the best quality product I can afford so as not to have to wish I had waited to get what I really wanted or feel like I need to go spend more to upgrade to something I should have done the 1st time if that makes sense. I have shot a couple of PRS type matches with my Bergara B-14 HMR in 6.5 Creedmoor. It is stock outside of the Surefire muzzle break, Cheap bipod attached to the front stud and the S&B PMii 5x25 in a 20moa Sphur mount that I purchased from Mile High Shooting a few years back.

I quickly found out I don’t have all or really any of the equipment to play this game at any type of real competitive level, beyond having a good piece of glass. Some items I’m thinking of purchasing as I get spun up are a pair of Vortex rangefinder binos with AB, a Kestrel and a really good bipod. I’m sure I’m missing plenty of items. Feel free to tell me if I’m looking at the right things to purchase and what I’m missing.

I’m wanting to get my 1st PRS rifle up and running. I think I’ve decided to bite the bullet and purchase one of the new AI ATX rifles when they come out. I have read how a lot of folks on here seem to really like their different AIs and I have always wanted to purchase one. I was saving up to purchase an AI AXSR but after seeing the ATX I decided that scratched my AI itch and it was more inline with what would be most useful to me as I have no need (at least none that I’m aware of lol) to fire large magnum rounds like 300 or 338 Norma (yes I almost pulled the trigger on one of those AI ASR kits Mile high has but I just don’t know when or where I would use all that gun). If there is a better production rifle let me know. I think I’m going to top it with a ZCO MPCT3 scope.

I’m not planning on running the 6.5 creedmoor barrel, I’m thinking of one of the 6mm rounds out there. Right now I’m looking at the 6 Dasher, this was my 1st choice but that is just based on others reviews as I’ve never shot it. My biggest concern from what I’ve read is the brass for it as all I can find is the Alpha and Peterson brass and from what I’ve read if you have one or the other you have to have your barrel reamed for that brass. I have no idea if that is correct or not nor do I know if either of those are really good brass. I’ve also thought of the 6GT mainly because of the feed issues I’ve read about in the 6 dasher and I see that the brass for it is also cheaper than the dasher. Then there is the 6BR Norma like the dasher. There are a lot of folks out there that seem to like this round although I’m not sure if that is for PRS and there’s Lapua brass for it so that is a plus. Finally there is the 6 ARC and to be honest I know even less than nothing about this round as far as it’s use for PRS style shooting but the few articles I’ve found and videos I’ve watched make it look interesting and hornady makes brass for it so there is that. I wrote off the 6 creedmoor because of the barrel life everyone talks about and the fact so many folks seem to be going to or using one of the other 6MM offerings. Another part would be is I’ll have to be able to use the bolt face that comes with the ATX so that is for a 6.5 and the ATX uses the double stack mags so I need to be able to use that as well. So any input, advice or guidance from you guys is greatly appreciated.

Oh and yes I’m planning on reloading for this rifle (and maybe more as I learn how it’s done). I’m already starting to look into what equipment I will need and designing a reloading bench for my garage area. Sorry for how long this was and thank you for reading it all.

Reloading Equipment 108 ELDM 500 Count

these are in stock if anyone is interested.

Chamberings for a switch barrel rifle

Looking at putting together a switch barrel system and after some reading WTO seems like a good shop and an easy system. It ain’t no MRAD or AXMC but it won’t cost as much either.

Thinking a defiance action with an AX 338 chassis.

Now I come to the decision on chamberings. I know I want 308 and something 300 Mag and 338 Mag. I’m not sure if I should buy a bolt for standard (308 Win), mag (7mm Mag and/or 300 Win) and Lapua bolts with matching barrels or if I should just get the bolts / barrels for the 308 and shoot 300 / 338 Normas. Would save some $ on the bolt but give up functionality in the future.

Prices on Lapua and Norma ammo right now is pretty close and I think performance is too. I’d have to set up to reload any of the above except 308. I already own a 308 and 300 Win but the 300 is for hunting so I’d really just have a some donor cases to reload.

Which combo would you go with and why?

I know big army is looking at 338 Norma for sniper and MGs which should bring the Norma prices down eventually. But the Lapua has been around and many continue to shoot it.

We got any drivers here? How do you keep from falling asleep?

Hello all,

Being that the hide consists of members in just about any type of profession, I figured I'd ask.

For those who drive long distances, do you have any tips?

I have a 13ish hour drive tomorrow and my biggest concern is falling asleep lol.
