WATCH: Harrowing footage of armored gunman being taken down by Texas police before Houston Veteran's Day Parade. Possible terrorist targeting parade.

HOUSTON, TEXAS, NOVEMBER 11, 2021

Two days prior to the culmination of this incident, Elliot Lewis, who had an extensive criminal history, pulled up outside the Harris County Precinct 4 stationhouse and opened fire with a rifle, sending a barrage of bullets through the unoccupied lobby. On November 11, just before the Houston Veteran's Day Parade was about to begin, deputies spotted the same sedan that had been captured on the stationhouse's camera and a high speed pursuit began.

After a while, a SWAT vehicle blocked Lewis' sedan and the suspect got out, pointing his rifle directly at approaching officers. Deputies opened fire, striking Lewis multiple times. At one point, officers on both sides of the suspect were engaged in a crossfire. No cops were hit. Lewis was pronounced dead on the scene. He was also found to be wearing body armor.

Given the events of the past 2 months surrounding the Rittenhouse trial and this suspect's clear targeting of law enforcement, it can be assumed that the Houston Veteran's Day Parade had been a target on that day but Lewis was neutralized before he could make it there.

Snipers in SHTF Situation

The producer brings up some interesting points but I think that he’s probably incorrect on some points.

First, I wouldn’t necessarily call the shooter that he’s describing a true sniper. This person would basically a murderous thief. A true sniper wouldn’t want to expose themself after taking a shot to steal the victim’s equipment.

I could see groups of marauders ambushing targets or invading various homes, farms or enclaves.

He’s correct that the killer in the scenario that he’s describing would now be a high priority target for the victims’ family and friends. I would also go out on a limb and say that the killer would probably have to know the terrain and area.

With that said, the killer would probably know their victims and the neighbors might start a search and destroy mission in their own back yards. Some innocent people might be falsely accused as there won’t be any recognition often bill of rights.

So what does everyone else think?

140 Berger Hybrids jump...How far?

I have 1,400 Berger 140gr Hybrids sitting on my bench and I am considering dump them on the PX...for everyone else to enjoy

I'm spending too much time schlepping back and forth to the range (and not having fun). Before I give up...

Questions:
How far others are jumping 140 Hybrids?
Assuming this Hornady OAL gauge was correct, my CBTO is 2.230. Tested 12 to 34 thous off. Many articles saying "ah, just start at 20 thou and you're good". Is there any empirical data (your loads) that suggest I should be going 40, 50 60, 70 80 (???) thous off?

What is impact on seating depth on velocity/SD/accuracy? My SD are not consistent session to session even with the same charge and same depth. Groups are also inconsistent. I can put 3 in a hole one session then 20 minutes later have a scatter graph. Could this inconsistency be a result of me not jumping the Hybrids far enough?

Would my short jump invalidate my velocity testing? When I did my initial velocity testing (40.8-42.5gr) I sat the bullets at 20 thous (CBTO 2.210). If Berger Hybrids do prefer a bigger jump in my barrel, would I need to re-do my velocity testing?

Here is my setup:
  • AI/AX
  • 26in WinTac Bartlein
  • 140gr Hybrids
  • 41.6gr H4350 >>> three ladder tests suggested node btw 41.5-41.7 and I went with 41.6....
  • CCI 200 LRP
  • Hornady Brass
  • Benchsource annealed
  • .264 mandrel expander
  • .289 Neck bushing

Here are my results form yesterday's 100 yard session:
Observations:
1) Nothing clearly stands out as consistently accurate
2) I have #5 and #6 where a group with one that is completely off and random >>> SD is aweful on both
3) Vertical stringing in #1 12 thous and #3 20 thous

Hello Hide,

I'm looking to upgrade my current scope. i have a NF 3.5-15x50mm i got around 2008 timeframe. its worked great and now its time for an upgrade.
Ive seen a lot of posts about top tier ZCO vs TT vs S&B vs NF but i haven't seen posts about optics in the $1000-1500 range.

i have seen Bushnell DMR3/XRS3, Burris XTR3, and Athlon Cronus gen 2's for $1200 +/- 100.

my current consideration is the XRS3 or XTR3. i can get either for the same price.

Thank you,
Chuck

Edited to add my info below

  • What type of conditions will you typically shoot in? Daylight, Lowlight
  • What are the typical distances you intend to shoot? 75-1500 yds. i would like to hit 1760
  • Are there any specific specifications you would like? FFP, tree reticle, 56mm objective, focus below 50 yds, mil, Huge FoV
  • What is the price range you can afford? $500-$1300

Ballistics calculators don't match real world observation

So I'm relatively new to long range shooting. I have a Springfield Waypoint in 6.5 CM, and shooting a hand load - Hornady 143 gr ELD-X with 41.5 grains of H4350 powder. The Hornady manual states muzzle velocity at 2750, and I've chrono'd it with a Magnetospeed v3 at ~2720. When I this load into any ballistic calculator (including my rangefinding binos), they all come out pretty close in terms of come up: ~4.0 MOA at 300 yards and ~6.7 MOA at 400 (just to give a couple examples). Problem is both times I've shot this week, those calculations are significantly off. At 300 yards I was missing a swinging target (12" steel plate) completely. I dropped down to a 3.0 MOA come up and didn't miss. I also got a target out at 300 yards and dialing 3.0 MOA, put 10 rounds in the 9 ring (about 8" in diameter on the target I was using). Tried at 400 and was missing another 12" steel target using the suggested elevation from ballistics software (6.7 MOA). Dropped to 5.5 and was spot on.

I feel like I must be doing something wrong, as I can't imagine every calculator is wrong. Thought that it might be the Magnetospeed and the FPS was way low; when I bump the muzzle velocity to 3000 FPS, the number the calculators give me are almost spot on to the DOPE I established when actually shooting. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Home Alone is the best Christmas movie of all time

I've literally watched this movie five times within the last three weeks. It gets better every time and I appreciate subtle things about it that I didn't previously notice. I truly think this movie is a masterpiece. The acting by Culkin, Pesci, and Stern really couldn't have been any better.

And the John Williams score really brings it all together in a very sentimental way.

Planning Gun Room Build, Electrical Question

In the process of planning my gun room build. The room is approx 50 feet from the service panel and will be 15x20 or close to it once completed.. I would like to run a 20A circuit for outlets in the room. I was looking at running a 12-2 wire for this circuit but research has been questioning if the is large enough given the distance. Any electricians on here? I have some time before wiring as removing floor drains and having the concrete floor leveled is the first priority.

Funniest thing I read yesterday

Webb [The prosecutor] also showed private Instagram messages between Bola Osundairo and Smollett in which the latter kept updating Bola on his whereabouts and flight delay information on the night of the attack, making the case that he was working with him to time out the planned attack. The duo had a contentious moment when Webb began reading the messages out loud. Some of the messages included the use of the N-word, prompting Smollett to interrupt the prosecutor to ask him to spell or abbreviate the word so as not to offend "every African American in this room."

Webb said that Smollett was welcome to read his own messages to the court but that he would not censor the quotations of the actor's messages. Smollett complied and the two moved on.

No word on whether Smollett apologized.
