To PCC or not to PCC...?

A buddy of mine has told me that he's "finally" convinced to get an AR given the times we are living in. After talking about it a while, he decided he wants to get something in 9mm because he does not want to deal with any additional calibers (currently, his only rifle caliber is .308). He has asked for my recommendation (budget is around $1200).

I know that he is not going to mess around with any stamps, so for him, we are looking at rolling the dice on a pistol/brace build, or a full 16" barrel.

Now, all the "experts" like to say that PCCs "don't suck" and the reasons and examples they offer usually revolve around SBRs and suppressors.

In this case, though, I'm having a hard time recommending something that doesn't suck, because in my personal opinion, if one is to bother with a long gun, it damn well better shoot something more powerful than 9x19. However, I don't want to discourage him from exercising that 2A muscle. I just can't fathom why one would want to take the weight/size penalty of a rifle only to dispense pistol-level firepower.

In my mind, the sweet spot for a PCC is a barrel 6 to 9 inches, and with a brace (unless one is inclined to SBR it). Anything outside of that, and I just can't justify the cost of one as a serious duty/self defense rig given other choices (shorter than 6 inch barrel, we're looking at sidearm ballistics; 10 inches and longer, might as well go 5.56).

Am I missing anything here? I get that they are fun to shoot, but so are airsoft guns.

Even still, my current list of recommendations is (in no particular order):
CZ Scorpion Evo
B&T GHM9 (if he's willing to come up a couple hundred)
CMMG Banshee
And I'm thinking about adding the Stribog A3 to the list pending more info.

First set of binos - which mag?

Hey all,
I’m going prairie dog hunting for the first time this spring and figured I’d grab some binos for spotting. Now, this will be my first pair and here’s some info about my shooting:
1. I have the little Leupold 25x50 armored spotter, which I like, but it’s hard to look through for any length of time
2. I shoot precision .22 and am getting into long range with both a precision-ish AR15 and a Howa Bravo 6.5 CM. I’m thinking about trying out PRS for fun and to learn me some things. I’d also like to learn to spot an help out when at matches when I’m not shooting.
3. Hunting would likely be limited to predator and varmit for now. P-dogs will be in the 75-250 yard range reaching out to 500 if we want to shoot long.
4. I have a tripod and will mount the binos for extended glassing

So, given that, and a ton or reading here and on some other forums, I was initially thinking that a 15x set of binos sounded like the way to go. Given that I’m newer to long range, I’m guessing I may be more prone to thinking I need more magnification than I really do. Am I right in looking for 15x or should I really be looking at 12x instead?

Brand-wise I’m looking at Meoptas, Steiners, Leupy Santiams, and Mavens. The Athlon Cronus and Bushnell Forge look interesting given the price but not sure it’s worth saving the money. I tend to buy once cry once, but within limits (ie my long range scope is an Athlon Cronus not a Nightforce or Kahles).

Anyway - I’d love to hear your thoughts on 12x vs 15x and if I’m looking at the right brands. Also, is there anything I’m not considering that I should be?

Thanks!!!

Labradar - New app has a bug in the Shot Detail (SOLVED)

Here's the deal ... I was plotting my data using the new app, and discovered that my individual shots didn't line up with the series totals (Avg, SD, ES, High and Low). For instance, a five-shot 300-WM group had averages of this ...

1643554859887.png
... but the shot details show much lower numbers ...
1643555014531.png

Note - shot #5 was 2860 ... just didn't fit on the screenshot.
Note - ignore the projectile weight, that's not "real", I forgot to change it. It doesn't effect velocity anyway. I was shooting Berger 200.20x HT's.

So then ... I pulled the SD card to look at the raw data and here's what I got ...

1643555360665.png

So the raw data is correct and matches the series totals on the App ... but the shot details in the series are WRONG.

I shot five different series yesterday, and every one is the same. The raw data matches the series totals and is correct ... the app-based shot details are totally wrong, and I have no idea where those numbers are coming from.

Has anyone else seen or investigated this? I'd like some "Peer Review" before I take this to Labradar.

BTW ... App is the most up-to-date version, and the Labradar firmware was just updated as well.

SOLD FS: Manners EH1 Gen2 Mini Chassis - BA IS SOLD

SPF- BA and stock are now sold

Selling my 6CM. I will happily split up the barreled action, but will likely hold off parting out until the barreled action is sold. Has been great, just ready to tinker with something new.

Specs:
Action: Big Horn Origin SA - 20MOA rail - with extra bolt handle
Barrel: 22" Proof Sendero 6CM 7.5 twist
Trigger: TriggerTech Special, single stage

I have about 450 rounds through both the action and barrel. It shoots easily sub half minute with Berger 105 Targets, going about 3100fps, suppressed. I shot it almost exclusively with the suppressor. I will include the brass, which has only been fired in this gun and has some loaded rounds left. Peterson SRP 6CM brass with 4 firings. Has always been annealed between firings. Does not include hellfire adapter.

Price for barreled action: $1250 TYD (without trigger, but will include brass/loaded ammo if you want it)

Stock is a Manners EH1 with Gen2 mini chassis and an Area 419 rail. I did have a Kelby barreled action in this stock for a short time so the bolt release button is carved out some. The barrel channel is relieved out to a MS2 contour.

Price for whole gun: $2300 TYD with trigger, brass, and loaded up ammo if you want it.

Does not include scope or rings. If someone really wanted the scope with it, I'd need to get all my money back out of that.

R.I.P Marcus Wynne

Don't think this has been posted here; just noting it as a I'm guessing some of you knew him / knew of him.

Marcus is a veteran of the US Army’s 82d Airborne and the United Nations Command Joint Security Force (Republic of South Korea) and served as an Airborne Infantry Battalion Training Sergeant, infantry Platoon Sergeant and Platoon Leader (1977-1984). He also served in federal law enforcement as a Federal Air Marshal, FAM Team Leader and lead FAM firearms instructor during the First Gulf War. He served in a variety of undercover counter-terror positions in over 100 countries.

"Match Grade"

Exactly what is "match grade?" What, if any, industry standards exist? I'm on a quest...Over the last 20 years I have put my money into many products which have the term "match" incorporated in the nomenclature. Many of these products have been a miserable disappointment. I'm asking because, as I start digging, I'm finding manufacturers have arbitrary standards. Minute of Angle accuracy is one of the best claims to print on a box yet, no standard for how that claim is derived. My quest? Truth in labeling and advertising!! I am all for allowing such claims but, the methodology should be included. Yes, that could lead to merch not leaving the shelf, it could also lead to better product on the shelf. I'm curious about others" opinions. I would enjoy a factory rep point of view.
