Eh slow day on the thread.Used in a sentence, Every one on the hide knew the tellhole was full of shit, yet they indulged him anyway.
The first requirement to have a reliable firearm is that the ammunition chamber correctly. If is doesn't you are screwed. If I took your example of setting the datum what could happen if I rode the charging handle a little bit when loading the first round from an uncharged bolt? What could happen if all off the tolerances aligned and the setback wasn't enough? What happens if the chamber gets a little dirty?I guess it’s like, why squeeze the brass down so much, when the rifle does it for you only as much as it needs (or seems to need) anyway.
I hear ya man. Stick with what works. I was crunching some numbers in my head, mostly due to the performance I got out of the 53gr Black Arc ammo I tried and came to the realization that regardless of how impressive the velocity numbers are, it still doesn't get you much in terms of practical performance. Really, what does an extra 125 fps get you down range? An extra 25 yards or so? Still, the stuff shot very well. In my post above, I failed to mention that I was shooting through 35 mph winds that kept varying in direction. At $1 a round, I can see keeping a small stock of the 53gr stuff.I have not tried those bullets. I used to experiment a lot, now I just load up a bunch of 77 SMK'S with healthy dose of IMR 8208 XBR set at 2.250" COL and enjoy getting out there and shooting. That particular load shoots pretty well in every AR I have, and it's pretty fast with good velocity consistency, SD'S are always under 20 which is good enough for me out to 600.
I used to try to squeak out every bit of precision I possibly could by fine-tuning different loads for different rifles, but it was just too time-consuming.
Every manufacturer makes improvements over time to the same model, well maybe not "every" manufacturer, but most who care about their product line. Some will put out Gen 2, Gen 3, etc. but most will make incremental updates over time to the optical formula to improve upon performance without doing any kind of press release or official announcement. That being said, the Schmidt 5-45 I had a few years back was extremely impressive for a 9x erector design.
How about you @Redmanss? You want to see one?I can have the shop contour a blank and leave it unpolished and post pics of it to get everyones approval on the outside finish and compare it to Lands barrel etc...
If you want I'll ship one to a guy so someone can physically look at it and give it they're blessing. I have a guy in mind for that but if someone wants to be in on it that way there is a general consensus. I'm cool with that. I'm thinking @lizzardking308 here on the hide.
The blank won't be rifled and they can just send it back and will finish it up.
Sweet! Gotta do a range report after getting it all shot in!Frank, please put me on the list for one M40A1 pattern barrel in 1/10 twist, and many thanks for offering these barrels.
(Shameless plug, just got my replica M40 back a few days ago, it also has a Bartlein 1/10 twist, 5R rifling - but in the M40 profile)

No target crown, and diameter at muzzle is 0.837", like the originals. Just need to do a range trip to break-it in...

Frank, keep up the good work(!).
Maarten told me you were there, but I never ran into you. Unfortunately, I had to run off a bit earlier on Sunday, so I did not stay for the awards. That was my first match and shooting as an amateur, I decided to just do what the pro I was paired with was doing.I'm of a similar mind, usually run my 4.5-22 between 12 and 15x, 22x only for zeroing. I'm so used to my Gen 3 6-36s (that I run at 15x typically) that the LHT's FOV at 12x feels "normal" to me. I dunno what my hangup about using it on a gas gun was but I got over it, haha.
I've been wanting to (and am still planning to) move south for a while now. Just getting all my ducks in a row. I didn't even realize you were at the Az NRLH until I saw the scores, woulda come and chatted. I was curious how you liked running your Impact 4k for the match. I ran one, strictly as an ancillary/back up figuring it could save me a couple points if I ended up finding a target (that I didn't find on binos) when on the gun and although that scenario didn't occur, it saved me a couple points on my 1st stage where I forgot to write my dope down before getting on the gun, haha.
But long throats also masks pressure signs, like Weatherby chambers. So is it the small increase in combustion area or that heavey bolt lift and ejector marks happen at higher PSI?Looking back through this thread I found this and it brings up an important point. Remington 700 308W chambers are nowhere near the same as any chamber cut with a SAAMI spec reamer. There is so much free bore that a 168SMk
seated to the lands may not have any bearing surface in the case mouth. Essentially creates a larger chamber.
I just almost went through this. Shipped a rifle and it got lost for 10 days, no info at all. I was just starting to wonder about the right course of action when thankfully, it showed up. The buyer was a prince throughout, far more patient than I. What I learned is that according to the Postmaster General its still the sender's until its actually received by the recipient. If its actually been declared lost then its the sender's responsibility to refund the buyer and wait for the insurance...which hopefully was used. At least that what I came to understand.Sounds like the shipper might be reluctant to refund? Contact usps and ask about the status on the insurance claim via the tracking number?
That was directed at the OP but appreciate your comment, why is it such secret squirrel shit about the manufacturer of the barrel blank? If both L3i and the blank manufacturer were both committed to making this work why wouldn't you be transparent to your customer base as it would more than likely boost confidence/sales of both your products?unknown is relative. We're pumping out match winning barrels and we didn't go into it lightly but I do understand we're the new kid on the block. I think the ultimate in accuracy is gonna be more to do with lot testing than the barrel attachment.
here's mine.Hey Gunny, did you get your ammo case ordered from DNA?
I'd like to see what you came up with.
Also, has your cheek rest come loose again?

Was using this same lot of Varget and same brass in the previous barrel (Remington 20” which wouldn’t group) without pressure signs, so maybe the Criterion chamber is significantly different.
Been seating to max length for the magazine, 2.865”. Tried a seating depth test, working shorter in .003” increments. No effect on pressure signs. Still need to find the lands. Kinda assuming I’m nowhere close to them but could be wrong. The seating depth chosen after my test didn’t work out, anyhow.
Just curious but if you were really after the ultimate in accuracy why would you settle for an unknown barrel blank manufacturer that is fitted to the action with a pair of set screws, shims and possibly glue? You have to heat it up pretty good but it is worth it in my opinion if you want the ultimate in accuracy
