Precision Rifles.....show em!!

Operation TRG restoration is pretty much complete. This was one of my worse used purchases. It was sold as “minor rust on the mags but everything else sweet” - after receiving it I discovered a horribly corroded barrel, bolt that was rusty and corroded, with the ejector and extractor springs 80% pure rust, a stock that had a few coats of miserable rattlecan on it, missing hardware, and yes, some trashed mags haha.

While I probably should have sent it back, it ended up being a bit of a restoration project, and this is what I ended up doing.

- replacement new takeoff 6.5cm TRG barrel
- @lumleyarms bolt handle, which I bent.
- bolt fluting to remove as much of the surface corrosion as possible
- @krg_ops Folding TRG buttstock
- full tear down, soak, blast, and fresh dark Cobalt cerakote on the metalwork.
- fresh coat of Highland Green on the forend and grips.
- replaced the extractor/ejector springs

I wish I’d taken more “before” photos - but I went straight into “fix it” mode when it arrived. While it would have been WAY easier to send it back and spend a bit more on a clean TRG, at least we bought it back from the death.

Great stuff but I feel for you. I recently had a similar experience

I was on a streak with all these barn find old new stock rifles and than it happened…….. poorly listed item with only one pic but after a long phone conversation I was assured by one of the dealer personal that the gun was lightly used and well maintained …… ya figure how bad could a 308 be

The whole deal started bad …. The rifle got lost for 10 days. USPS is very bad these days

They first told me it was shipped …. Than I was told it was at my FFL ….. than I was told fed ex accidentally picked it up with a USPS label and they were holding it. Miraculously it arrived on day 11 and was packaged poorly and the box was beat up

Upon inspection the gun was beat to shit. Damaged crown …. Chamber looked like it was worked on with a power drill and a wire brush. The barrel was badly pitted . I dont think they ever cleaned the barrel …. The copper ran out of it and exposed a shot rifle

The bore scope made me sick. I immediately had my ffl overnight it back UPS the way a gun should be shipped called them in the am and said the gun would be back to them by 10 am and i expected a refund bt 12

Even though they said all sales were final and no refunds Amex confirmed a refund shortly after noon

If the guy didn’t represent the rifle completely opposite of what it was i would not have been so pissed

Amazes me of how people treat a good gun

I was glad I did a few days later I found a 26 inch barrel the first was 20 digi cam rifle that was never shot and i am impressed it wants to shoot
I commend you on the project

Official (DTA) SRS, HTI, Covert, Hunter Thread

@secondofangle2, thanks for the guidance on the trigger.

I have done the following and got to about a 1lb trigger that feels safe to me.

I stoned the trigger bar on its sear interface,

Stoned the sides of trigger bar to mirror (hoping it would slide easier)

Applied some lapping compound to trigger pin (600grit) and spun it inside of the trigger pin hole of the trigger with a drill (super carefully and not much) - just knocking down the significant drill marks (this probably did almost nothing, but it felt gritty when I let the trigger spin freely on the trigger pin initially and now it's smooth) - if anyone does this, go about it super carefully so you don't enlarge the trigger pin hole, we're just trying to debur essentially

Filed about 1mm off the trigger weight adjustment set screw. I essentially took the non-threaded cone off the set screw. This allows me to feel more comfortable than 1/4 turn or so of thread engagement, gives me a turn or two, plus blue loctite, so it's not coming out, but it's lighter than before.

Picture is average of 5 pulls.

I wonder, did you remove the actual sear or and work on it or do all your work on the trigger bar?

Don't get me wrong, I'm content with pull weight and how crisp it is, I just wonder if there's more that could be done.

I really wish there was just a touch of pretravel tho. This single stage feel can be challenging to predict on barricades and nonstandard positions.

I did not remove the sear itself because it appears to be a more complicated procedure and just polishing the transfer borrow with sufficient to get better than what I had hoped for

School me on 223 AICS mags

Also I have to add. I’ve had a lot of different actions for 223 size case (DTA, tikka, r700 sps, defiance anti, ARC Nuke and Archimedes) and none of them fed 100% no matter how much tuning except the ARC Nuke/Archmedes. The ARC CRF is much much more forgiving of the round presentation and doesn’t skip over or nose dive the 223.
The DTA was also pretty good for feeding at long as the rounds were over 2.50in

QUIZ: How much do you know on this critical subject?

26/30 as well … 87%

We used to have “Bundy Sunday” at our house when I was at pilot training in Enid, Oklahoma… Sunday cookout for our class, and friends/family, and then we’d watch Married with Children, and The Simpsons. Haven’t watched The Simpsons in years now though, but remember the “Simpson’s Did It” episode of Southpark!

DPMS kitty kat

From what I understand, going with a barrel that short will seriously neuter a 5 56 round, but a good defensive round in 5.56 will still be more effective than most handgun rounds out of that barrel length.

Its fun to shoot too, if fireballs are your thing. A buddy of mine has one. He put one of those linear comps on it hoping it would divert some of the blast. Putting a flash suppressor on it was a waste of a flash suppressor. Putting a brake on it turns it into a machine of masochism. You can also put a K can on it and wind up with the equivalent of a 12.5 in length with much less bark.

I say, if you have the itch, buy it. If you get tired of it, you can always convert it to 300BO, which is what I chose for that barrel length. That, a suppressor and subs. A new definition of fun.

School me on 223 AICS mags

Old MDT polymer were excellent for a long throated 223 but sometime misfeed 300blk.
New MDT metal are fine although expensive and you need to file the front plastic shell to go 2.55in. Not hard just a bit of a pain. Still my favourite one for match 223.
5rnds accurate are excellent. I run then for my 204r and 300blk on my coyote guns. No issues.
4rnds Hawkins hunter are excellent too but won’t fit all dbm. Had to send my HNT26 for warranty service to get the latest gen that fits them. They also don’t work with 223 tikka Aics bottom metals without modification. Max coal is 2.475in, I think.
Magpul AICS 223 I think is the best for 300blk or very short coal 223 base rounds.

One thing to note is that they all kind of have a different latch height so mix and matching sometimes doesn’t work and you’ll have either the bolt drag on the top of the feedlips or bolt skipping a round. A chassis with adjustable latch height helps with this.

Black wavy marks on brass

I don’t purposely try to beat the crap out of cases, and doing a mandrel step after the fact helps undo most damage, but even while being careful, those rotary media separators are rougher on cases and particularly case mouths than most think.

With the fine blast-media, I can skip the media separator altogether, and then the roughest thing my brass sees is the dry tumbler.
Especially when dealing with the Lapua/Norma Magnum cartridges, the cases are so heavy that the thought of running them through a rotary separator makes me cringe. Even the slightest drop always results in a case-mouth dent.

Died Suddenly Documentary World Is Live On Rumble

if this is true, you'd think there would be more than one person blowing the whistle, but who knows?
Up here in Canukistan we heard a lot about skyrocketing miscarriage rates until the media was told to stop talking about it.

New Contest Starting Now! This Target Haunts Me

This is an additional post to reference the post that is a target from 2015 post #86. My poor computer skills will not allow me to add verbiage to explain the target. It was shot on April 12, 2015. @Lowlight had tired of the 5X5 targets that were being posted and came up with this target as an alternative test of skills. The rules in scoring this target can be found in the Advanced Marksmanship Forum in the "stickies". So, to move on.

I found my rifle did not have a cold bore problem it was in fact a cold shooter problem. If I dry-fired about five times and rebuilt my NPA the shot went exactly where it was supposed to. This target was only my second try. A few days before-hand I had doped out the cold bore shot and the day I shot for record I had perfect conditions, no excuses. The mistake I made was strategic and was in the second group of five. I pulled the first shot. It landed on the circle surrounding the second group of five thus a "point." Remember, the lowest score wins. I somehow decided that a rifle that I trusted implicitly had gone wonkers and I tried to chase the shot. Thus, a strategic mistake and as you can see, the whole endeavor turned into dog shit. One round out of twenty. @Clearlight, in Australia, is still listed as #1 with 1.2pts. Extrapolate that into five shot groups and what you get is ridiculous.

Woulda, shoulda, coulda. Oh well.

DeLane Development Group Rimfire Ventures

To eliminate feeding issues with the 700 platform actions would using something like the CZ457 use where the magwell is directly attached to the action make sense? It allows the use of smaller propose built magazines and also takes different chassis out of the equation.

Can you take me through how “feeding issues” are linked to anything other than the convention used on the CZ457?

Also, what you’re describing was used by Remington on the 40X Rimfire in their attempt to make a repeater, but they were never successful in making the 40X work as a repeater. Part of the reason was the small magazines.
