Planning first full rifle build

Have played around with upgrades on my handguns and built up ARs from scratch, but got the long range bug last year. Currently have a Bergara Premier Comp in 6gt and have got that dialed in. So brain is jumping to a new project.

Interested in a 6.5 PRC build I can hunt with (no real long shots for hunting) and take out to distance on the range. But definitely some new things I'm not familiar with. Looking for some help to ensure I understand exactly what I need.

Plan is to start with an Impact 737r SA. I've read some people lean towards a medium action for 6.5 PRC in case they have long COAL on heavier bullets, but read plenty get by with the short action. But wanted thoughts as I'm certainly fresh to this cartridge.

Was going to pair with a Proof Carbon sendero profit and an AG composite stock.

Where I get lost is bottom metals. Especially with the 6.5 PRC being a larger round for the short action I get lost in the details. Not sure what I need here or what my options are. Do want a detachable box magazine.

Just looking for insight if the action is a decent choice for the round and to fill in the gaps on bottom metal and magazine options.

11.5" Barrel and other suggestions

Hello All,

Myself and a coworker are changing out our Colt 6920's into pistols or possibly the SBR route. I doubt very seriously I will ever run a suppressor, but he is saying he might eventually. He is leaning on me to help him as he has never built an AR or has much armorer experience. Not that I am an expert (hence me being here) but I have built a few and help maintain a few guns for folks. Any helpful suggestions would be appreciated. We are trying to make the lightest weight rifles possible. Budget friendly would be great, but I am aware sometimes you have to "pay to play".

I have picked out the BCM Lightweight Fluted 11.5" barrel for us. Should I lean him towards 12.5" if he is wanting to go suppressed at some point?

Also, does this BCM Barrel ever even come in stock? Because I am beginning to wonder... So what are some alternatives we should consider? Ballistic Advantage? Roscoe?

Ideally all we are trying to change is the barrel, the rail, and the stock. Keeping everything else for now as we move down the road. Speaking of rails. I was under the impression a barrel nut had to be used with the specific rail or the D ring. I am guessing this isn't always the case?

They won't be used for anything realistically outside of 100 yards. We are wanting these for "SHTF/Truck Gun's" to replace our longer rifle that's a burden to us getting in our of trucks an UTVS with.

We will be running red dots with maybe magnifiers.

I believe that's all the information I could give to everyone to try and get some insight. If I missed something please let me know.

Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Bullet stabilization issues? .300 Norma Mag

Hi,

After solving my "super weird issues" which were due to bad primers, I have a new problem with my .300 Norma Mag reloads... my groups are very bad (between 1.7 and 2.7 MOA at 109 yards/100m) and it seems that literally all bullets land sideways on the paper target:
487500748_9528591027220202_6024409072926055085_n.jpg

Here's my reloading recipe:
  • Neck-turned Lapua Brass, trim to length 2.482in, neck OD 0.3355in for a loaded round at OD 0.3375in
  • Hornady A-Tip 250 grs, tried bullet jumps from 0.020in to 0.065in
  • RWS LRM primers
  • Vihtavuori N570 powder (77.9 grains) -- it seems low compared to some guys here on the forum but I'm already above Vihtavuori official max which is at 76.1 grains

I shot twice 15 bullets (plus like 3-5 fouler shots at the beginning):
  • String one (15 shots):
    • Average: 2703 fps
    • Std dev: 9.8 fps
    • Extreme Spread: 34.8 fps
  • String two (15 shots):
    • Average: 2703 fps (same as string one)
    • Std dev: 8.2 fps
    • Extreme Spread: 30.2 fps
I'm shooting with a silencer, but concentricity looks good:
487842999_996522142450608_1349494398747456024_n.jpg

And my barrel is a 26" 1:10 twist.

While my velocities aren't the best, they aren't terrible either, they're pretty stable... I really don't understand what's causing this.

I tried factory 230 grainers from Norma ("match grade" ammo) and it gave better groups (all holes touching at 109 yards), although I couldn't go to the target to check how they landed.

In your experience, what could cause this?

Paul Craddock - Craddock Precision Interview

I get to geek out a bit, I am interviewing Paul Craddock today. Ever since the Valkyrie I have been fanboying window shopping Craddock Precision ARs. Since was planning a 6 ARC project, I wanted to pair that 6 ARC bolt gun with a 6 ARC gas gun to see the pipeline. What's the accuracy, what the ranges, how does it perform on command like a competition rifle ?

The Terminus Zeus in 6 ARC is here, the Zermatt Matterhorn is here, now to pair with a gas gun.

The interview Paul is a great background. We learn the history of Craddock Precision, Paul's gun building philosophy. How he approaches the AR15, AR10 which might be different from the other guys. A great example is roughly 15 different gas lengths.

I want to thank Nick for putting us together, this conversation flowed. It moved in a nice logical direction touching on the ins and outs of a gas gun.

From Valkyrie to ARC, to larger Frame ARs, we touch on it all.

As always, thanks for listening, thanks for sharing, thanks for being a part of the Everyday Sniper podcast.
