Improving bolt lift DIY

Here is a how to on smoothing out the bolt lift of a Remington, many rifles have similar cocking systems so the concept will carry over. This process does little to lighten the bolt lift, but it will greatly improve the feel and smoothness giving the impression of a lighter bolt lift. First, here is a pic of the bolt where the cocking piece "cams", this is one of the main areas you need to focus on, and as you can see, the machine work is pretty rough, and there is galling from the rough surfaces.

P7210526_zps0dcde612.jpg

here is a pic of the firing pin assembly, you also want to polish the marked area that makes contact with the bolt, these two surfaces make contact under heavy spring tension to reset the firing pin.

P7210527_zps1c7a3336.jpg

To polish these surfaces, it will require bolt disassembly. first, I use 1000-1200 wet/dry sandpaper with some light oil to clean up the machined surfaces, you can even move up to emery cloth or a finer grit. Here is a pic after a few minutes of 1000 grit and oil, doesn't take much.

P7210530_zps7fd4c55f.jpg

If you don't have the tools to disassemble the bolt, you can also get similar results using a very fine lapping compound, this will also "cut" the surfaces in relation to each other since it is assembled and under tension. With the lapping process, you need to thoroughly clean the surfaces and lube to ensure all the grit is removed.

If you want to take it a step further, you can smooth out the threaded surfaces in the bolt and on the bolt shroud. I do this by using a fine lapping compound and reassembling the two. Remember, when the bolt is assembled, the threads are rotating and making contact under a great deal of tension from the firing pin spring, the smoother these surfaces are the better the feel of the bolt.

A look at the threading

This is a process that is fairly easy, and can greatly improve the feel of the bolt, good luck!

Parker Hale M85 replica - Mission Impossible?

Before I begin, here’s what my latest rifle project reminds of….a series of highly improbable events that may be considered…Mission Impossible.

My Mission: collect enough M85 parts (and machining expertise) to turn this….
IMG_0973.jpeg

IMG_0980.jpeg

IMG_0981.jpeg

IMG_0987.jpeg

….Into something reasonably close to this:
IMG_1823.jpeg

M85_lt_profile.png

It would help greatly if I were a machinest (or even a gunsmith), but I’m clearly not, so there’s that. The guy who sold me the receiver and various parts did include these 3 custom taps for the barrel threading, which was helpful.
IMG_0982.jpeg

But this will require real machining expertise…
IMG_0983.jpeg

Probably use parts from unit on left to complete the M85 trigger parts on the right.
IMG_0977.jpeg

Unfortunately there are still 5 parts that I am searching for:
1. Bottom metal with mag latch (possibly requiring fabrication - need technical info).
2. Front sight (GP240 machine gun sight)
3. Front handstop (black) w/ sling swivel
4. Rear sling swivel.
5. Barrel (this will have to be custom made, just not sure who might make an M85 barrel).
(Rear sight is a unicorn, so I’m not going to worry about that one part, and fortunately it’s hidden under the scope mount).

So lots of machining to do by someone talented, heat treatment of the cast receiver, a custom barrel fitted to this old bolt, and a lot of metal refinishing…plus whatever comes along the way.

Why an M85 replica? Well, I do not have any British sniper rifles in my collection and since an L42 and L96A1 “Green Meanie” are not available (or affordable), I’ve decided to piece together P-H M85. I’m 18 months into the project, but a long ways to go. Any build tips re this ridiculous sniper rifle project are appreciated…

I also blame this Mission Impossible project on this video:

6.5 prc Ammo Suggestions

Just got back from the range and disappointed once again in Hornady 6.5 prc 147 loads. Last two rounds in the box both blew the primer. I didn’t see it after the first one otherwise I would have stopped. Hopefully nothing hurt the action.

Anyways, looking for some suggestions for other factory 6.5 prc you have had good luck with. Also, I remember reading somewhere hornady had put out some questionable 6.5 prc ammo recently. Is this still the sentiment?

New guy from Germany

Hi everyone,
new member from Germany here. Since our forums are not that lively, I am occasionally reading here for over a year now.
Now I may need your expertise, so I finally created an account :)

I am solely a recreational shooter, but also a little gearhead as far as i can afford.
Bought my first rifle and handgun in January, CZ Bren 2 MS and CZ Shadow 2 Compact, and enjoy shooting both since.

Hope you all have a great day.

Ultima Ratio

Good afternoon,
I was fortunate enough to purchase a PGM Ultima Ratio, .308, Comando II .
I was also able to get the proper Schmidt and Bender 5x25x56 for this rifle.
I’ve been in contact with Francois at PGM in France. All that I can say is that the customer service, and their willingness to answer the many questions that I had about the rifle, without any was a pleasure.
The first shots at the range to zero the rifle was nothing short and very nice.
I would like to find another barrel , in perhaps 6.5 Creedmore. I’d like to find one in the US, as it would make things much easier . Unless that’s something that could be transported in 🧳 on a flight from Fr.?? Probably not….
Sorry for the long winded post. But I’ve never had such a difficult time finding info on a firearm. Well, there is plenty. But not in English.
But it shoots like it should. Very accurate, still... Especially considering this rifle was made in 2003… Not bad

Sorry for the long post… but if anyone has info, love to hear from you…

David

Where is everyone buying their precision calipers?

Hey all,

As title states, where are you buying calipers? I can go to Amazon and buy something & get it delivered the next day. However, with precision instruments, I would think buying straight from the manufacturer is best in order to avoid fakes.

I went to mitutoyo website and it seems like you can't buy straight from them. Is there a place you guys recommend I buy some of these?
