...From the sun that is. For those of us that are blessed with extra strength livers but lacking in the melanin protection leaving us to burn like vampires under the sun rather than tan (put another way, those of us that are of Irish heritage)- a proper hat is important.

Luckily for you- I've spent more on hats for such occasion over the years than many of the folks here have in their most prized scopes. So pull up a chair and let's talk. When it comes to a proper summer hat, you're looking for fabric, breathability, and coverage. Plenty of styles out there but if you take sun protection seriously, you may need to put your personal style on the side. If you're tough enough to not worry about sun damage, just as a PSA- they quite literally have to cut out a portion of your skin for the biopsy and sew it back together. And that's just where the fun begins.

So as for the better options I've come across- if you don't mine looking like a dork, one of the best options I've run across for the money is one of the Sunday Afternoon's Adventure hats. They incorporate a semi-rigid brim in the front and a cape in the back. They're relatively inexpensive, are lightweight, and breath quite well. They also have a boonie style hat with similar breathability/fabric but less coverage.

One of the more popular brands is Tilley- they're expensive and I've got a few of them and if that's more to your liking, think of them as a 'fancier' boonie, between the LTM5 and LTM6 models you get to choose your brim size. The 'Airflo' design works pretty well but it's important to size the hat properly (it should be slightly loose and they seem to run small in their hat sizing for what it's worth) but the nylon fabric the LTM5 & LTM6 come in doesn't breathe as well and while durable inhibits the Airflo venting somewhat if performing physical activity. If that's your intention and you're still digging the Tilley style- I'd recommend looking at their Airflo models made out of Organic Cotten for extra breathability. The LTM5 Organic is comparable to the standard LTM5 but if you want the bigger brim of the LTM6 with organic cotton fabric- check out what they call the hiker's hat, the brim should be comparable to the LTM6. It also has a 'cooling pad' in the crown- that can be tossed or used (haven't had a chance to fully explore how effective that may be).

Last option that I've had good luck with (and is a bit less traditional) is the Shelta hat line. They're what I'd consider, mid priced but what makes them a bit unique is in the front brim, they have a rigid insert that keeps the front structured while the remaining 2/3's or so of the brim is more traditional. I have the firebird & condor models which the only difference is basically the crown of the hat- but both are part of their 'wide brim' models because, again the sun hurts me. Otherwise- I've been pretty happy with them for the money as well.

So to wrap things up- in my experience, avoid the ball caps- prioritize fabric, breathability, and coverage & if it isn't rated for UPF 50+ it's not worth your time or money and move onto to some other brand/model.

Hi all,

I'm looking into ordering a Accuracy International AT-X in both 6.5 Creedmore & .308. Could be possible eventually that I can order the Comp/Pro version with the forend bridge. But, I'm looking into Spuhr Optic Mounts and I'm especially watching the Spuhr SP-4602C with 38mm height. I'm going to mount the Vortex Razor HD Gen III 6-36x56 scope and I'm wondering if the front reticle will be to high from the barrel or not.

Since the front reticle is obviously 56mm, take into account protection flips of +/- 3mm and you take half of it = 30 mm. (8mm left without MOA lift) If it is the comp/pro model, with the forend bridge, will I have TOO much spacing between te barrel /and or forend bridge and the scope or not ? Anyone experience with this combination ?

There are various 2 rounds holders on the market that range from sewn elastic loops from SAP to fully machined version from Hoptic. This new version from Inflection appears to split the difference nicely between the two.

Is XBR8208's pressure spike too fast?
I could not get it to cycle reliably in a 20" 1/7 rifle (gas & buffer) length system.

2560 FPS / 75gr BTHP and it was basically a single shot AR

With Varget at the same FPS Avg (2556 FPS) it would cycle perfectly and lock back on the mag.

I had another set of loads with XBR running 2800 FPS with 68gr HPBT. These would cycle but it was still short stroking on some rounds and would not lock the bolt back.

All these loads work just fine in my midlength setups.

So on top of inflation which we all know is real but you have sleepy Joe saying it isn't so and jobs being created and people are making more money etc...

Then why is Mercury Marine laying off nearly 400 people from the first go around in April to another almost 300 thru this July?

Costs on everything are up and not everyone is running out buying boats and boat motors right now.

I just see more of this coming down the road in other areas of manufacturing. Not just boats.

I purchased a brand new Bergara BMR 17 hmr. I Purchased it online and shipped to my local FFL. I picked it up the 19th, Wednesday. This morning I went to the range to break it in. I shoot and clean after every shot for any new rifle or barrel. Initially I punched the bore and ran a clean dry patch through it. I took a shot at the back bank to test it. It fired with issues. I cleaned the barrel again. Next I cleaned the scope base screw and thread locked them. I installed a 30x target scope and looked the bore and scope to bore sight. I didn't make any E or W adjustments. I took another shot, benched at 50 yds. I took the 2nd shot and the rim on the cartridge ruptured and blew my whole trigger guard assembly from the bottom of the rifle. The pressure blew the assembly out of the stock from two action screws Has any one ever had this issue?? The ammo I was shooting did not causing in my other rifle's or revolver. Thank you. SFGS! I have a Zeiss LRP S3 6-36 that I’m using on a my 16” 6.5 Creedmoor while I wait for the 22” barrel to come in.

I had it out this weekend and got it zeroed and the zero stop set, no issues.

Where the issues start, is after ‘exercising’ the turrets a bit. After I had confirmed my zero and had the zero stop set, I dialed the elevation turret until it stopped and for 18.8 mils.

I returned the gun to the zero stop and fired another group to confirm tracking. I repeated this process 4 more times to feel confident that everything is tracking.

Well, today when I took the gun out for some dry fire, I exercised the elevation turret and for 18.8 Mils on the first run up and back down. On the second run, the turret hit the wall at 17.5 Mils and then went “soft” where it would turn, but I could hear that it wasn’t moving the turret. I thought that was weird so I ran the turret up and down again and repeatedly had the turret go “soft at 17.5 mils.

On the last run up (I did this process 2-3 times out of bewilderment), the elevation turret came off, with the zero stop inside!

I thought I had everything torqued to spec, but apparently not for the turret cap to slip off of the turret with the zero stop inside.

I managed to get the zero stop and turret back onto the scope, but I know the turret will need to be reset to the position it was zeroed in.

Has anyone experienced similar issues with the Zeiss LRP turrets where the cap doesn’t stay torqued on?
