What thermal LRF spotter has the best LRF performance?

So several of the consumer-grade thermal monoculars/binoculars have integrated LRF's onboard, as do several of the thermal weapon sights themselves.

The ones that come to mind for spotters are:
Pulsar Merger/Telos
AGM Voyage/Axiom
Guide IR

Things seem to spiral upwards in cost after that, to units like the Voodoo B or FLIR Recon.

As for integrated LRF's in weapon sights:
Super Yoter
Pulsar Thermion
HALO XRF
Etc.

Now short of the Voodoo/FLIR stuff or MARS weapon mount units, have any of you experienced any difference in the range finding performance between the above consumer grade units? Or are they all imported LRF's pasted on the side that come from the same factory in China with similar performance? Can they come close to matching something like a base Leica handheld RF?

The purpose I ask is I have some high grade stuff on a dedicated long range 22 CM rifle, but a lot of the night shooting I do is actually with smaller calibers at smaller targets (varmints), for which accurate ranging is very critical to making a hit. I already have 2 very good quality non-LRF thermal weapon sights for them, but I would rather have a separate spotter with LRF that putting a MARS on each of them LOL.

velocity loss per inch of barrel

I put that subject line of this post in google and came up with numerous articles/tests coming to the same conclusion. Loss of velocity is negligible when you shorten a barrel unless you are shooting a really fast round like a magnum. This was a pretty good article on Chuck Hawks site that goes into it ..........

"Velocity loss (or gain)
It is worth noting that the velocity figures published in ammunition brochures and reloading manuals are sometimes taken in barrels different in length from those supplied on many rifles. I have seen various estimates of how much velocity is lost (or gained) when a barrel is not the same length as the test barrel in which a cartridge was chronographed. Here are some of them.
The 2001 Edition of the Shooter's Bible states, in the introduction to the Centerfire Rifle Ballistics section, "Barrel length affects velocity, and at various rates depending on the load. As a rule, figure 50 fps per inch of barrel, plus or minus, if your barrel is longer or shorter than 22 inches." However, they do not say what category of load to which this 50 fps average pertains.
Jack O'Connor wrote in The Rifle Book that, "The barrel shorter than standard has a velocity loss which averages about 25 foot-seconds for every inch cut off the barrel. Likewise, there is a velocity gain with a longer barrel." He went on to illustrate this using a .30-06 rifle shooting 180 grain bullets as an example, so his estimate was obviously for rifles in that general performance class.
Other authorities have tried to take into account the different velocity ranges within which modern cartridges operate. The Remington Catalog 2003 includes a "Centerfire Rifle Velocity Vs. Barrel Length" table that shows the following velocity changes for barrels shorter or longer than the test barrel length:
• MV 2000-2500 fps, the approximate change in MV per 1" change in barrel length is 10 fps.
MV 2500-3000 fps, the approximate change in MV per 1" change in barrel length is 20 fps.
MV 3000-3500 fps, the approximate change in MV per 1" change in barrel length is 30 fps.
MV 3500-4000 fps, the approximate change in MV per 1" change in barrel length is 40 fps.

The 45th Edition of the Lyman Reloading Handbook also has a table showing Center Fire Rifle Velocity Vs. Barrel Length. Their figures apply to barrels between 20 and 26 inches in length and agree with the Remington figures. The Lyman table shows the following approximate velocity changes:
• For rifles with muzzle velocities in the 1000-2000 fps range, the change in velocity for each 1" change in barrel length is 5 fps.
For rifles with muzzle velocities in the 2001-2500 fps range, the change in velocity for each 1" change in barrel length is 10 fps.
For rifles with muzzle velocities in the 2501-3000 fps range, the change in velocity for each 1" change in barrel length is 20 fps.
For rifles with muzzle velocities in the 3001-3500 fps range, the change in velocity for each 1" change in barrel length is 30 fps.
For rifles with muzzle velocities in the 3501-4000 fps range, the change in velocity for each 1" change in barrel length is 40 fps.
The 43rd edition of the Lyman reloading Handbook gave some concrete examples of velocity loss for specific calibers and loads. The Lyman technicians chronographed some high velocity cartridges in rifles with barrels ranging in length from 26 inches down to 22 inches with the following results:
• The average loss for the .243 Win./100 grain bullet was 29 fps per inch.
The average loss for the .264 Win. Mag./140 grain bullet was 32 fps per inch.
The average loss for the .300 H&H Mag./220 grain bullet was 25 fps per inch.
For standard high intensity cartridges in the same test, the Lyman technicians chronographed the cartridges in barrel lengths ranging in length from 24 inches down to 20 inches with the following results:
• The average loss for the .270 Win./130 grain bullet was 37 fps per inch.
The average loss for the .270 Win./150 grain bullet was 32 fps per inch.
The average loss for the .300 Sav./180 grain bullet was 17 fps per inch.
The average loss for the .30-06/180 grain bullet was 15 fps per inch.
The average loss for the .35 Rem./200 grain bullet was 11 fps per inch.
After a bunch of disclaimers, the Lyman people concluded, "The rule of thumb is that high speed, high pressure cartridges shed more speed in short barrels than do the low speed, large bore types." It's funny, but that is what I had suspected all along!"

Howa 1500 blueprinting

Hey all,

New as a participant but long time forum reader.

I’m blueprinting a howa 1500 short action. I bought a .308 copy in 2014 or so and it’s harvested several animals. Despite being generally happy with the performance, It would have left-right POI shifts in addition to the usual up/down when you change ammunition. I could shoot a 1ish moa group with a 168 grain round, and then switch to 200 grain ammo and I’d have to come over 5-6 inches to the side. This led to wanting to rebarrel it. I decided to go with 300 WSM, and I’m a machinist by trade, so I figured it’d be a fun project to do myself.

I routinely produce parts at work with tolerances ranging from +/- 0.001” to +/- 0.0003”, so I had every confidence taking it on.

I’ve been somewhat shocked at the tolerances on the action and wanted to hear if anyone else had similar experiences to mine.

Starting with the action body itself: I built a spider fixture out of some spare aluminum and made perfect precise bushings for a rod to indicate the action in straight and true on my lathe. After getting the center of the action aligned within 0.0001”, I measured the face of it. I found that the front face of the action was out of square 0.006”, and the counterbore for the barrel out of concentricity 0.016”

I felt that this was excessive, made a note, and blueprinted the body.

It’s necessary to increase the bolt face to accommodate the new round, so I chucked my bolt between a four jaw chuck and a steady rest. Here’s where I encountered serious error. I’m unable to get the bolt to run true, and have lost confidence in the bolt itself.

Upon measuring, I found that the firing pin hole is 0.007” off the center of the bolt body.

I’m going to proceed with the rebarreling, since it’s nearly impossible for me to end up worse than it was, but I’m curious if this is the standard amount of runout that one should expect. I genuinely believed that it would be less than .002” for my worst dimension.

Norma XTREME LR-22 Ammo

Seems Norma is trying to get into the Rimfire long range game.

NORMA

Norma ammo

Norma’s “rocket tail” bullet is a unique new .22 LR development, with claims of consistent hits on a 12-inch plate at 600 yards.

Norma’s XTREME LR-22—with a patented 43-grain bullet specifically designed for 300 yards and beyond—is an exciting new development in match .22 LR ammo. During Norma tests conducted with a Vudoo match rifle, these bullets consistently struck a 12-inch plate at 600 yards. The bullet features an unusual configuration of a hollow base bullet with a cone inside, the point of the cone pointing backward and flush with the bullet’s base. Norma said this “rocket tail” bullet configuration results in less negative pressure at the tail, minimizing drag and deceleration. Norma also claims flatter and more stable bullet trajectory, even though starting velocity is slightly supersonic at about 1,165 f.p.s. and the bullet must withstand that downrange transonic “wall” that causes bullets to depart stable flight. The 43-grain bullet’s increased mass also reduces sensitivity to crosswind. MSRP is $9.69 per 50-round box. norma-ammunition.com

Next rifle in 6.5 PRC

I am going to get a 6.5 PRC for my next rifle. It will be mostly a target rifle for prone long distance steel matches. I’ve wanted a GAP rifle for awhile. I’ve considered having a GAP range rifle built as I like the Manners PRS1T stock and it is a GAP labeled impact 737r. I’ve also considered getting a 6.5 PRC from Stuteville as I spoke to Wade and they have them in stock with CRB barrels. Haven’t heard much about CRB barrels though. I have a foundation stock on another rifle and they are awesome. I prefer stocks to chassis. A third option is GAP currently has a ready to ship Gladius that is basically their range rifle which checks all the boxes with a Bartlein MTU 1-7.7tw 24inch in a Manners PRS1T. However it’s a older gladius so it is a GAP labeled defiance tenacity. This concerns me being a discontinued action. I spoke to GAP about this and I was told they would stand behind the rifle but if I had an action specific issue like needing a new bolt or firing pin I would have to speak to defiance. I’ve never had a defiance action. Would y’all have reservations buying a new rifle built with a tenacity being that it is discontinued?

The Official “All Audi Drivers are Douche bags” Thread

Ok… present company excepted. Mostly.

But this is too good not to merit a thread. One that I hope is here for years. And if we are lucky, we can doxx this self-important twat.

So after 14 hours of riding and ferry travel, I get to my nice coastal motel in Nova Scotia. Check in and get the end room. Always good luck! Only one neighbor to worry about. Next door neighbor is also on a GS… so automatically good people.

Then there is door number three! Because the first two rooms on the end don’t have parking spaces in front of them. So I pull into the first parking space. Happens to be in front of room number three.

Unload. Go in my nice tidy little room (Canadians are very tidy…. Right @Sean the Nailer?). It is one of their better qualities. Not five minutes later, this white Audi is pulled right up to my bike. And the asshole is laying on the horn. I look out my window and ignore it. He starts blasting the horn again. I ignore it. Wait 15 or 20 minutes and Mr. Self-important Audi douche… has pulled his car in and blocked my bike and gone into his room.

So I ask at the front desk…. “I am sorry, did I miss something and parking spots are reserved in front of rooms for self-centered Audi douchebags? “

“No, eh,” the nice young lady responds. “I don’t know what to do,” she says. “Want me to tell him to move it?.”

“That’s ok,” says I. “Arguing with anyone that retarded is a waste of your time and mine. But I got pictures of his car and his parking job and for the duration of my vacation, my hobby will be to post this douche bag on every form of social media… and do my best to find out who he is. So I can fuck with his mind for the rest of time!”

Then I went and moved my bike. Because why exacerbate the situation here… when I can have fun with this long term!! I mean… good threads on SH show up in ALL the search engines. So the more we post, the better it gets for Audi butt-boy.

So for your entertainment… here is Frog-boy in his Audi. Parked all the way out in the lot. To park me in.

IMG_5413.jpeg

Here is his plate… Nova Scotia (an insult to all Scots that a Peter puffing little Audi fag could even deign to have such a name on his car. HDR 620 I’d anyone wants to run it for fun and giggles….

IMG_5411.jpeg

And here is the best part… it’s not even a decent Audi. It’s some kind of A3 little econobox entry level fag Audi.

IMG_5414.jpeg

A dude in an A3… which is little better than a Jetta with some rings on the front… thinks that he is entitled to “a personal parking space” outside a cheap Canuckian motel?

Bah hahhahaha….

So my fellow Hiders… have some fun!! This is the official “Audi Drivers are Doiche Bags” thread. Memes… anecdotes. Images. Whatever.

And you SH Audi drivers who are almost certainly not douche bags because you shoot guns and make ammo and jeer at hybrids and don’t hang out on ARFcom…

This guy made you look really, really bad! Every time you get into your Audi now, you are goi g to be thinking “everyone is going to think that is me.” Even if it isn’t! And you don’t deserve that!

So have fun!!

I think I’ll join Twitter to start posting this guys pictures. Been looking for an excuse and now that Musk is trolling the lefties… seems like the thing to do.

Cheers! Sirhr
