“Ad” Topperwain Challenge

The squirrel in the head thread from a few weeks ago got me back in love with some of my old .22’s. And thinking about a “project” I always wanted to undertake with a .22.

Since I was a kid, I saw articles and later some videos of the husband and wife team Ad and “Plinky” Tooperwain. They were exhibition shooters for, among others, Winchester.

I always wanted to find one of his tin Indians. Shot with a Winchester pump or auto at 25 feet in front of a crowd… then the “Indian” was presented to someone in the audience. There is a Topperwain at the Buffalo Bill museum. And the only two I ever saw outside a museum were in a gun club “clubhouse” in Raleigh, NC.

These were shot with iron sights. Seated Offhand. As fast as Tooperwain or his wife could load the rifle. At 25 feet. No dots to shoot at. He just shot the tin with the “pattern” in his head.

Here’s a couple of examples.

9E28B2F2-8E8D-429B-8E71-B1D677D1AEBD.jpeg

So having given up on owning a real Topperwain (they sell for thousands now), I am going to make my own. And it got me thinking that the world needs more tin Indians not less. And it might make a good Snipers Hide “exercise.” Kind of the ultimate rim fire dot drill!

So challenge rules. Really? Rules? Only one. Must shoot at 25 feet or more. Can use a dot template. Can use a scope. Can be as big or small a piece of tin as you like. Can lay paper on the tin with a pattern on it. Can be prone. Can do on indoor range. Can do in .17 or even a center fire if you want. Can use rests, bags, anything.

The only thing that matters is you get a good Indian head that would make Ad Topperwain and his wife “Plinky” proud. Btw, her name is where the term “Plinking came from. She was a trick shooter, too.)

At the end of the challenge… you get a piece of wall art that will make your friends go “wow” and a great sense of satisfaction.

Any takers? @buffalowinter ??

Cheers, Sirhr

PS. Already plotting my strategy…. Winchester 52 target. Copper sheet with a paper template (though I will practice before using the copper!!!) And lots of time to get it right. Btw, for templates, any local Kinkos or Office Depot can take the above images and blow them up and make several copies cheap.

PPS... if you want to do a different image... that's fair game too! He did Uncle Sam, Custer... others. Use your imagination!

Will May 5th be the nail in the coffin?

Not sure how it all works, heck in the last recession I bought my first new vehicle and thought $500 over invoice at 0% was how you bought a new truck all the time.

Saw a video where the WH Press Hottie said “May 5th…involuntary collections ”

I bet they made sure it was a few days after rent was due so landlords get paid. Car notes it’s the other hand, maybe they won’t get paid.

Never been in collections so idk how that goes either. Just curious if this will change anything. I’m sure the sage of the Bear Pit will derail this anyway.

SOLD Vortex 18x56 Kaibab binos

They had a trip back to Vortex 2 years ago. My eyes aren't the best so I think there may be some dust micro scratches on lense. But if there is, they are very faint and to me can't be seen through the lenses. I just want to be honest. I've had them for 4 to 5 years and no longer have lens caps and such. They will include the RRS tripod strap. $550 shipped

Firearms 2 Browning O/U shotguns

525 Sporting
This is one of the best feeling guns I've had my hands on. It's right handed with a palm swell. It just don't fit me like I want it to. I've shot it a few rounds of sporting clays and have really enjoyed shooting it. It's a super nice gun with some handling marks as just about any wood gun you use will have.
32" Rhino Ported barrels
Adjustable comb with the spacers and tools
Adjustable trigger
Has a kickeez recoil pad that could probably stand to be replaced, it's getting a little soft.
Gun will come with 7 muller chokes. That's about $800 in chokes alone…
2-U0
2-U1
2-U2
1-U3
Asking $2250 shipped for it

Ultra sport plus
This gun is also super nice. I've shot it a few rounds of skeet and sporting and I have the same problem with it. It just don't fit like I want it to. This gun shoots like a dream with little recoil even with the 1 1/8oz 1250s. I know, not usually what you get with a browning lol
It's right handed with no palm swell. It also has a few bumps but nothing major at all.
32" Rhino Ported barrels
Adjustable comb
Adjustable trigger
Decelerator pad on it
This gun comes with 6 factory gold ring chokes.
1-skt
1-ic
2-IM
2-F
Asking $1850 ahipped for it

I personally think the 525 is the best sporting model browning ever produced. Me being a 15 7/8" LOP, neither of these guns will satisfy that without putting a 1" plastic spacer with a 1" pad in the back of it and I just don't want to do that. I'm selling both to fund another shotgun I found that "fits" me.

I've had problems uploading pics for some reason. If there's something else you want to see I'd be happy to send whatever pics you need.
Thanks

Pat

So, we can carry in federal buildings now?

I dig all these bullshit restrictions getting uplifted. It defies logic and reason how firearms could be banned in post offices, yet you can legally bring in one to ship that you're still clearly in possession of. A little piece of absolute fucking stupidity removed.

Mizelle said that while post offices have existed since the nation's founding, federal law did not bar guns in government buildings until 1964 and post offices until 1972. No historical practice dating back to the 1700s justified the ban, she said.
Mizelle said allowing the federal government to restrict visitors from bringing guns into government facilities as a condition of admittance would allow it to "abridge the right to bear arms by regulating it into practical non-existence."

Snow beaners are truly idiots…

Present company excepted… because you guys are the exceptions to the rule otherwise you would not be here….

But massive early voting in Canuckistan… and everyone is lining up to vote for the liberal socialist commies who will “stand up to Trump” as if Canada (with an economy smaller than NY City and an army smaller than NYPD) can stand up to anything.

Instead of voting for a conservative who will restore their rights… secure THEIR borders, cut their taxes, exploit THEIR energy… and also work the the U.S. to create free trade on equal terms that will help bring a business Renaissance back to North America, instead of letting the ChiFascists have it all?

Orange Man Bad… so Canuckistanian brainwashed sheep will vote away their right s and freedoms, because some commie blohard snowbeaner is going to claim “I will stand up to Trump?”

An hahahahhahaha… 50 years progressive education and migration and CBC propaganda and leftist policies have take One of the great Western powers (that punched way above its weight for a country that, then, had just 20 million people or so) and turned it into a nation of bleating socialist sheep.

Baaaas baaaasa. Truckers bad. Orange man bad. Cuba good…. Baaaaa.

What a bunch of disarmed morons. They will vote themselves into third told status and think they are heroes for standing up to the one administration that can actual help Make Canada Relevant Again. (Never were “that” Great. But at least they can have back some delusions of global relevance and not get arrrested for posting memes… which is coming next, hosers.)

So go vote properly Took-sporting hockey beavers. Save yourself from decades more oppression. Because no one is coming to save you, either. We want your land and your minerals… but we got too many socialists already. No 51st state for you!!

Your future is in your hands!

Seekins PH3 proprietary rail?

Just got the new PH3 and I’m pumped—but I’ve always been a die-hard Spuhr fan. Because of how the rail is CNC’d, I can’t get one of the base screws to seat properly. Should I carefully file it down to make room for the second screw, or just run it with one? Would love to hear from the gear nerds on this one.

What The Pros Use -Best Rifle Scope For Long Range Precision Shooting 01/20/25

Screenshot_20-1-2025_162533_precisionrifleblog.com.jpeg

Congratulations to ZCO!

"ZCO scopes picked up 6% more shooters among this group to land at 20% overall. That was enough to edge out Leupold from the top spot that it held last year. Leupold represented 19% of the pros this year, compared to 22% last year.

Tangent Theta scopes went from 2nd to 3rd most popular but were once again just 2% behind Leupold. Nightforce had a similar showing year-over-year with a respectable 13%. Kahales picked up a few percentage points to land at 11% today, and Vortex dropped from 14% to 10% among this group of pros."

Zero Compromise Optic (ZCO) Scopes: 20% of Pros

20% of the top 200 ranked shooters in the PRS said they were running a Zero Compromise scope when I surveyed them at the end of the 2024 PRS Season. That included 3 of the shooters who finished the 2024 PRS Season in the top 10 in the Open Division, which was as many as any other brand among the top 10. They also had a total of 12 among the top 50 competitors, which means they were well-represented at every level.

Former endeavors that used to give joy and are fleeting now...

Howdy Hide,

A post from @GrayRyder influenced this idea. Basically the gist is things that used to "blow your skirts up" but for one reason or another you're presently indifferent to (but maybe hopeful that'll change in the upcoming seasons). Some here may celebrate in learning that I'm up tonight because of having oral surgery that left the one side of my mouth is being held together by stitches and what can only be described as silly putty. I was given an insulting Rx of Ibuprofen.

(1) And this goes back to @GrayRyder, hunting... Whelp- I didn't get a hunting license again this year with the rifle season kicking off last Saturday here for Buck in PA. It's not that I have anything against hunting and years ago I couldn't wait for the season to come across (here in PA, even the schools are off for the Monday after Thanksgiving because that was the traditional start of rifle season for bucks here for many decades. So that to say- it used to be a big part of my life. These days though- after years upon years of seeing anything but bucks, I started questioning whether I was making the most use of my vacation time to sit in the woods alone, in the cold, and only seeing a couple of squirrels. The rare times that I did see deer that I could legally shoot, I spent years of making excuses that they weren't 'big enough' to warrant the effort entailed afterwards but as the years went by- the fact of the matter is I just don't have the drive I used to carry to kill a deer. Nothing sacred about it/them- just it doesn't give me any joy in doing so like it used to.

(2) Fishing- Good lord did I used to love fishing. Specifically fishing in creeks for trout. I never got into fly fishing but growing up- I was permitted a day off of school for my birthday (which coincided with trout season here in PA) and I picked that every single time because I just enjoyed the hell out of that. About 10 years or so ago though- it was like a switch flipped and I stopped caring about chasing after stocked fish. To be fair, I was in my last year (of my 2nd attempt of college) and I was taking a heavy course load and chasing after fish had to take a backseat to reading textbooks and I don't think I ever rejuvenated that passion after I graduated from college.

(3) I used to love going backpacking. It honestly scratched a lot of my itches, I loved being in the woods, I'm a self professed 'gear queer' and would get untold hours of enjoyment just researching the latest and greatest equipment for backpacking but in this pursuit- I simply lost all of my friends who used to join in on the adventure and it stopped being fun doing it by myself.

(4) Back to hunting- but birds this time instead of deer, by and large, chasing pheasants & grouse was always my favorite form of hunting. It just was.. different I'd say, you didn't have to worry about being quiet or stalking them, you just walked the fields with your friends and talked shit until a bird exploded from your footsteps and then the whole line instantly went alive trying to pop said bird. Similar to my previous comments about backpacking, those friends either died or moved onto other things. The grouse in PA all but disappeared and the pheasants turned into a sore point where the state game commission started charging a stamp that cost more than a regular hunting license to participate in pheasant hunting but cut the stocking of said pheasants by more than half in the same year. That was the end of grouse/pheasant hunting for me.

(5) Waterfowl hunting- that was a relatively new one for me and different enough to fill the gaps left behind from my grouse/pheasant pursuits, but that was also dependent on having a friend with a boat/decoys (for ducks) or a friend with a relationship with a farmer and also decoys (for geese). And they all got married & got out of the waterfowl game.

(6) Concerts- I used to be the biggest concert whore you'd ever met, 20 years or so ago, I saw them all and I was front row and center. I was there with my battle buddies and a mosh pit started at a Korn/whoever concert 20 years ago and someone left with a broken collar bone. I was there at a 3 Days Grace/Breaking Benjamin concert where some chick literally bought the shirt off of my roommates back depicting a stripper pole and the text "I support single moms". Now- I don't keep up with modern music nor do I care to. I seldom participate in concerts but when I do, I opt for the cheap seats away from the crowds and give me a place to park my ass.

(7) Holidays (in general)- I remember when I used to care about New Years, St. Patricks Day (in particular), Memorial Day, 4th of July, Halloween, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc. Now- I feel like New Year's is amateur hour for drunks, St Patricks Day isn't far behind that. Memorial Day is nothing more than a commercial excuse to put things on sale while I try to keep whatever demons I may have in check, 4th of July- I frankly don't know what we've been celebrating anymore other than an excuse to send up fireworks. Halloween is still cool although very commercialized anymore, Veterans Day... I'm just going to skip sharing my opinions on that one. Thanksgiving is now a financial and/or expected societal burden and Christmas... hell I couldn't tell you the last time this was a holiday that held any 'magic'... maybe it did in 2007 for me but that pursuit is also long gone. Now, at least for me, it's nothing more than a commercial pursuit to buy family members crap they felt forced to write a list for so they in turn can also buy you crap that you felt obligated to write a list for.

Ugh- sorry, not trying to be bitter by any means, my jaw is just killing me and I can't sleep.

SOLD OD green upper and 15" Midwest Industries handguard.

Bought years ago for a build I never followed through on. I'm not sure who made the upper but it matches the handguard perfectly. Handguard has some magpul mlok covers on it. Neither piece has ever been assembled. The handguard does come with all the hardware, wrench, and barrel nut which I believe is the titanium version. The handguard was bought direct from MI. I don't believe they offer OD anymore.

$175 shipped.
I can only do a money order or zelle. Sorry, no venmo or paypal.
