Look what Maggot just found.

I had been wanting a lever action rifle because...lever actions are cool. Lusted after the new S&W 1854 in 44 Mag. but the 44 isnt that great of long range cartridge.

And I'd been wanting aa .22 because...affordable (unless you get really serious), but I hate the cheaper new Savage's and Ruger's, mostly short barrels and the mags are expensive, cheezy, and dont last well...in my experience.

So I was a bit stumped, and then I stumbled across the:

Marlin 39 A, lever action .22 caliber. 24" barrel and great holy moly no mag, reliably tube fed. Made in 1941 in what I'd call overall good condition. Small spot of rust on the receiver but other than that good to very good. I got a deal because everybody was afraid of the rust. May just be an abrasion or somebody tried to sand it. Dosent concern me, for me this isnt a collector, its a shooter. The funny looking line in front of the receiver is really a finely fitted machine work, just shows up bad in the photo, maybe the flash. Range day tomorrow.

If you know anything about these, wisdom welcomed.

Results April 2025 Topstraps Rimfire Challenge

April shoot is in the books, was REALLY cold and blustery on Friday, started off cold and calm but as the day went on wind picked up. Saturday was a bit better but could still see your breath and Sunday got up to 60 and decent. Not a big turnout, not sure if cold conditions, a few other shoots going on or maybe some are just getting tired of the matches but those that came had a good time.

I added a few new targets for the bonus, mini little gongs going from 6" down to 1", I thought they looked like little frog heads so called it Frogger, you hit the first you jumped to next one, you missed you jumped back. You got 8 shots at 6 targets. If you got all 6 straight thru I gave you the last two points as a bonus. A few managed to do it straight thru.

Scores continue to go up a bit as more shooters are using better ammo, lots of Lapua SLR being used even though it's hard to snatch up. You sure can tell the difference watching thru the spotting scope and seeing the hits on the targets. Some still enjoy using upper middle range ammo and trying to beat the high end ammo scores. Chris and I shot peep sighted gun, I used an old Winchester 52D and He used a BSA Martini MK II, we both used SK Biathlon. He shot in mid day with bad lighting and I shot earlier with overcast skies so the targets stood out. Really fun using these old guns on 4moa targets from 25 yards out to 197 yards. He got 5 of the bonus and I only got 4. Cuda used $1.06/50 Aguilla and he actually didn't do bad but some places It prob had a 100fps spread it was off so far but he had fun, he showed them last year, using Lapua SLR and the same gun he won the match besting all the big guns. Makes ya wonder, it's all in the ammo.

Anyway, Randy Wise used his McGowen barreled Anschutz Pistol to eek out the win by reverse count. Seems that new barrel is gonna be a shooter. Kurt was on his way to besting Randy but at the end missed a Pizza piece and a 2" circle to let Randy earn the win. Was a nail biter watching both of them shoot. A couple other competitors also earned a place on the shoot shack ceilig by hitting the 197 yard rack 10" down to 1" in 10 shots with no misses. Good Job Dustin Kettlewell and Jeff Clark. Free entries for next month go to Randy Wise in A class, Dave Callipare in B class and Cuda Gatten in C class.

On to the Scores: All ties decided by reverse count. Max possible points 92 with all bonuses.

Accessories Vertical AR Upper Hangers

I have had a few requests to print something to store extra AR uppers vertically. Prices are shipped TYD and I will provide tracking once shipped.

Two options for both an Ar15 and AR10. One is the low profile AR Hanger that provides just enough room to hang the upper. The High profile hanger will accommodate most bipods of the Harris style or smaller along with short front grips. The Ar10 type will work with DPMS style Ar10's. This will come with two undersized clevis pins that you will slide into the upper holes to lock them in place. They are easily removed when you want to remove it from the wall. Then just place the clevis pins into the two holes in the middle of the hanger. This mounts to the wall via 4 #8 Screws (not included).

Colors can be red or black, if you don't specify I will ship what I have on hand. Custom colors possible upon request.

Specify which model you would like please!

$35 TYD AR15 Upper Hanger Low Profile: Holds AR15 uppers close to the wall. Nothing can be mounted on the bottom of the handguard.
$40 TYD AR15 Upper Hanger High Profile: Holds the AR15 upper far enough from the wall to allow short handgrips and Harris size/style bipods to remain attached.
$35 TYD AR10 Upper Hanger Low Profile: Holds DPMS style AR10 uppers close to the wall. Nothing can be mounted on the bottom of the handguard.
$40 TYD AR10 Upper Hanger High Profile : Holds the DPMS style AR10 upper far enough from the wall to allow short handgrips and Harris size/style bipods to remain attached.

Suppressors .30 or .22: Best First Suppressor?

Thinking about buying a first suppressor, but can’t decide between a .30 caliber model or a .22 rimfire can? It’s a pretty common conundrum.
image.jpeg

A .30 cal. suppressor, like a BANISH 30 (https://www.silencercentral.com/products/banish-30), is a great, all-purpose option for hunting and target shooting. It covers the gamut from rimfire plinkers to larger-caliber rifles in popular chamberings like .308 Winchester or a 6.5 Creedmoor. The .30-cal suppressor quickly becomes a go-to tool for hunting rifles, especially when shooters step up to magnum cartridges for chasing larger game like elk. Not only does it bring the report of rounds like 7mm Rem. Mag. and .300 Win. Mag. down to hearing safe levels, it also eats up a lot of recoil. It’s favored for those same reasons by tactical and competition shooters who want to reach out and touch something without getting their shoulder punched and their bell rung with every blast.

Rimfire cans, like the BANISH 22 (https://www.silencercentral.com/products/banish-22) are also a must-have for any burgeoning suppressor collection. Typically, they are designed to work with .17- and .22-caliber rimfire rounds, and often cost quite a bit less than more sophisticated, larger-bore suppressors. Rimfire ammo, too, is less expensive and hardly recoils, so it is fun to shoot and shoot a lot. An appropriate suppressor increases that fun factor even further. They are great training aids, taking the bark and bite (recoil) out of the equation for new shooters, allowing them to focus on fundamentals. And they can be perfect companions for small-game hunting.

It's worth noting, too, that some rimfire cans, like the BANISH 22, can be used with small-caliber centerfire cartridges, including .22 Hornet and even 5.7x28.

While both suppressor types are great for in the field, they really shine when it comes to practice, where you’re getting a lot of trigger time. The hearing protection alone is worth it, and the added benefits of increased accuracy and recoil reduction are a big plus when introducing new shooters to the shooting sports.
