Need expert advice on target size/distance placement

Hi, guys -

I'm in the Southwest and have access to remote public lands where I can set up targets as far as I want. Recently, I have decided to set the targets on terrain that is not accessible to vehicles. So, we have been strapping plates to an old ALICE pack (or an EXO pack) and humping them up the hill a mile or more. It's hard work, but we like the adventure and are using it as training for backcountry hunting. These plates are 3/8" AR500 steel and weigh from 25 pounds to over 90 pounds. It makes for a long hard satisfying day!

Anyway, I usually put out targets that are 1 MOA from our shooting position, so 12" at 1200 and 18" at 1800 and so on, roughly. The problem is, we're shooting in a direction that has a highly variable crosswind, over varied terrain. On a GREAT day, it will be 3-5 MPH, on an average day (like today) 5-10 MPH, and when it's higher than that I don't even bother to shoot. We could reorient so we're shooting in a head/tail wind, but it's suboptimal in this location, and I kind of consider it cheating to do that. Today, we basically could not hit targets with a 338 LM in the varied winds. We're pretty dialed with equipment and know what we're doing, but we're not world class shooters and don't aim for that (pun!). We still have fun getting close and practicing, but let's face it, we don't hump hundreds of pounds of steel up a steep hill to just record misses - we wanna hear them ring.

The answer is obvious - larger targets closer. So I'm thinking move the 18" target to 1400 yards, the 24" to 1800, and so on, making them be 1.3 or even 1.5 MOA targets. Or, cheat the wind and shoot into it (which I don't favor because we want to shoot into the hill as a backstop).

What is a reasonable size target at like 1200, 1500, 1760, and 2000 yards? At what point do you make it too easy? Because right now, it's too hard, and the work involved humping them is considerable.

If you were setting up a range at those distances (past 1000 yards) to shoot with everything from 260/308 to 7PRC, 338LM, and 375CT and 50 BMG, what size would you have (in MOA) at those distances? Or would you just cheat the wind and shoot into it?

Night Vision Iray hybrid 75

Just wondering if anyone has had one these and put it to the test. I’ve had one for a few months now and have used it a lot.
The problem I’m having is that the zero is shifting all over the place. I hope it’s just mine and not a real problem. I went to check the zero again today and it was 2” low and 1 1/2” left so I rezeroed it. I went back 2 hrs later and it was 2” high. Been fighting this for a couple months now. Hard to trust beyond 150ish yards and it’s supposed to be for longer range hunting. Besides that it’s probably the best image quality of any thermal I’ve used and I’ve pretty much had all the top companies top tier scopes. This thing could be a real winner if they figure this zero shift out.

American History

Hello,

I've been reading the constitution and the federalist papers to my daughter (she's only 2 but I believe that getting these into her subconscious will create a strong foundation). I want to educate myself about the American history on a deeper level and understand things such as:
- Complete American history
- Government departments and their effect
- Economy
- Court rulings (especially 2nd amendment related)
- Christian morals and their influence on culture
.... and so on.
You get the gist.

I want my kid and anymore kids we have in the future to be God fearing America loving conservatives. I struggle with my faith but I know that I'm on the right track. Please recommend some books and resources that would help me educate myself and be a solid guide for my children.

Thank you,
SS

Reloading precision .223 for the first time. Help if you can...

Not sure if this is the right section but I want to start reloading .223 for precision shooting. Nothing crazy but I want to get as good of groups as I can.

I'm not new to reloading .223 but I have always just done it for plinking ammo because I have a lot of old Wolf 55gr bullets (wish I had bought double the amount).

Anyways how should I start? I have nothing but range brass so I would think I should start with new brass? Is there a specific brand that is better than others that can commonly be found? I have a good bit of Sierra 77gr MK I will be using. Other than that it's a blank slate...

6mm Fat Rat project

Well, here is my next project. The 22 Grendel didn’t shoot up to my expectations. It’s ok, I went out on a limb and ventured into experimental territory. I gave it a whirl, didn’t like the results, so we are trying a new gig. 6 FR from Lee Wells. 24” 8 twist Bartlein. 936 from the gas block on. I got the whole kit, dies etc. The only thing I don’t like, is I requested a threaded muzzle. I’m sure it’s just an oversight on his part. The barrel is pretty heavy, and the FR is not a big cartridge, so I don’t think I’m really worried about it not having a brake on it. My life is crazy right now, and I’ve got to pull the other rifle down for the new build, so it may be a little while, but I expect to give you guys the full story when I get her running. Have fun out there!
