In order for that to work, you have to sprint full blast across the pasture towards the cow with calf jacks in hand. Surprise is the element. Cows like surprises.
It would probably be found dead the next morning or soon thereafter. Colostrum is the nectar of life for those newborns.

I went to buy a few weened Angus calves from a guy several years ago. He said if I wanted it that he'd throw it in with the others. She was pathetic looking and I said what the hell, if it's free and will help you out. Load it.
When I got home the wife asked about it. I said we'll see how she turns out. She's been a pretty good one so far. Pretty mellow and her calves have been really good. That's her third one so far.
