Today is the 50th anniversary of Dark Side of the Moon

As much as I used to like Pink Floyd, as I get older, I just find them to be over rated. Their stuff is just not standing the test of time (no pun intended).

To me their best album is animals.

Comparing them to greats like:
Stones
Beatles
Moody Blues
Zztop
Zeppelin
Sabbath

They are just meh!!

Everyone has an opinion. Check and see which of those has sold the most albums. DSOTM was # 1 for a long time, now the population has doubled since it was released so its easier to get more sales.

First you have to know how to listen to it.
Kids don't understand that part, at all.

You'll need to get the Mobil Fidelity press of the album
Amazon product ASIN B000000IRB
Then you need at least a 5 channel, if not 7 channel + subs (note plural) surround system.
BOSE/Sony/Pioneer, etc won't cut it here, get something real.
You need something with Morel, Dynaudio, Seas, Scanspeak, etc drivers.....REAL speakers.
You'll need REAL electronics, doesn't have to be Krell amps, but it wouldn't hurt.

Listening to Pink Floyd on your kiddy thump thump shit just doesn't cut it.

Ill agree with the MFSL copy, the best I've heard, I have 3, LOL, bt your assessment of gear is off. GOOD 2 channel will smoke any type of 5 or 7 channel. You just need the right stuff...meaning horns and tubes....My last system that won 'Best of Show' at the 2014 Capital Audio Fest. Those multi channels are an interestign aside but they temd to take away something. In fact you can see the album at the front of the rack.

Well, at least he spelt it right.

They had their place. They were the first to fill stadiums, and their later work was revolutionary. Sgt. Peppers is generally considered the 'greatest' rock album of all time. If you get a good copy and hear it on a good stereo, like @in2ishun said above of DSOTM, its truly incredible. They did The White Album and everybody else had to follow, even Dylan.

I kind of see them as unique. Just below them form Great Brittan were Floyd and the Stones.

Altec horns on top of Paragons? I'm envious. What electronics?

They were the Backstreet Boys of the 70s.

Close. Wooden reproduction Altec 1505's on top of wooden reproduction RCA 9462 bass cabinets. 105 cb efficient, fairly flat response from about 32-16000 hz, with discernable bass to 16. They were designed to 1000 + seat auditoriums. Doing them in wood really smooted them out, fine electronics help as well. The electronics were all custom built point to point wired phono and preamps, and heavily modded Altec 1570's (165 watts p/c triode tube) power amps also ptp wired. It makes a difference not having circuit boards. Not a transistor in the chain. Turntable is a Technics SP 10 Mk II with a Kuzma 14" 4pt arm and a Transfiguration Proteus diamond cantilever cartridge.

Ive downsized and sold them but still listen to a pair of Altec 604 E Super Duplex in custom built solid white oak cabinets.

The real question of which rock band is the greatest is answered by asking yourself one question.

What band makes you automatically crank it up when you hear just about ANY of their songs?

For me, it's only one band.

AC/DC.
Jefferson Airplane. Grace may have been a bitch but she was a beauty in her day.

This is better to zone out on than DSOTM. Especially on a highend tube system

Floyd is amazing. I listen to them almost every single day. Growing up my dad played their music among other rock from that Era, and I hated it on principle alone. In my 30's my tastes started to evolve, and now I get it. If I haven't listened to the wall and dsotm a million times, it's because I've listened to them 2 million times. I can't believe someone even mentioned the Beatles in this conversation. That is literally the most overrated band of all time. When using a talent/success scale to discuss this, they are right there with the Kardashians.

Listen to Sgt. Peppers on a good system and you'll change your opinion.

The only song of their's I like is "Rain" and it's just Ringo's drums I like in that song, nothing else. The only real reason they're popular was because they were at the center of the "British Invasion". So in other words they were at the right place at the right time.

Get the fuck out with the beatles vomit you are spewing . You cannot deny the beatles as a major pivotal thing and they had plenty of good stuff. You just think it’s cool to dis the beatles. Im really more of a metal guy (like Warrel dane stuff…jeff loomis…slayer etc) BUT you cannot deny the original era of what made pop rock. Psychedelic. Especially as I bget older I go back to the originals

The only thing the beetles were good at was doing drugs.

I guess John Lennon was also good at picking a woman who would later set the stage for cuntney love.

My electronics is an old system out of the old Radio City.
It's Bell/TRW, tuner, preamp, main amp and is capable of 32 channels if I want them.
The main amp is 4 foot side to side and weighs near 300 lbs.
6 main channels are Dynaudio esotec 7" with MDT33 tweets.
Centers front and rear are Morel mid bass and Focal TC120TD5 tweets.
Subs are Peerless XLS 2x12 cabs flat to 17hz
Power is a non issue.
If I am in the center of the room I can close my eyes and face any direction and not be able to tell where the sound is coming from.
With a 2 way system you can ALWAYS say --------------> speakers are right there.
That's why.

But thats not how it is in real life. When I go to concerts you can always tell where the music is coming from. In the proper room, with the system I posted, its like being at a live concert.

But I'd enjoy hearing your system sometime.

NOT that I trust Wiki, but...
etc etc

There's about a gazillion sites showing the shit, none of them seem to agree.
Color me shocked.
It's like everything else, a buncha bullshit.
