6XC with a 22" barrel?

I know most people are in the 26"+ realm with the 6XC, and I understand that I'll be leaving performance on the table with a shorter barrel, but does anyone have any experience with the 6XC and relatively short barrels? I'm hoping for 3,000fps with the 105 Hybrid bullet without abusing my brass. Is this just dreaming or is it possible in a 6XC with a 22" barrel?

Re: 6XC with a 22" barrel?

With a 22incher, you are probably going to be toasting your brass, IF you can get to that speed. With a 26 inch, its doable without hurting the brass, but its about top end without getitng into pressure. You might get 2900, but that would be probably a best case scenario.

Re: 6XC with a 22" barrel?

With what I have found in mine.... you are skating on the realm of impossible with a 22" barrel. You will torch your brass and eat thru barrels chasing the performance and speeds you want.

26 is the shortest I would have it. Mine is 26.5" and I wish I had done 28" finished length.

Re: 6XC with a 22" barrel?

Well shit. I'm beginning to think maybe 24-26" and no muzzle brake might be a better choice for me than 22" and a brake. Ditching the brake in favor of a couple more inches of barrel might just turn out to be a positive tradeoff. The matches I've been shooting in my area like using obstacles, barricades, and tight shooting positions and I think having as compact a rifle as possible is a benefit.

Re: 6XC with a 22" barrel?

I do feel that you won't get 3000 fps without shooting way to stout of a load. Then when it rains you WILL blow primers.

I do feel you will be better off running a longer barrel. Mine is 27 plus a brake. 3100 is easy with a mild load of H4350.

I too shoot matches with all sorts of tight places and baricades. A 27 inch barrel has not hurt me at all. Heck look at the top match shooters in the US. Just about all run a barrel that is 26 inches or more. The few that have shorter barrels than that run a suppressor so it winds up being long anyway.

I feel the more you practice with your rifle the easier it is to handle.

SO an inch makes a big difference in handiness when you are talking about a barrel over 24"? Sounds like you are already out there past the handy rifle platform and are just chasing optimum performance at this point.

You're barrel is going to be long in these 6mm speed demons, get the brake. You might as well do it right.

I guess the small bore diameter rounds really isn't the place to try and build a handy rifle. The 22" idea is totally dead, I'm thinking 26" now, though I'm honestly undecided on the brake still. My smith is pretty local, so I can always have him to 26" and no brake and then add the brake later if I want. The XC is a relatively low recoil cartridge to begin with, any idea how an un-braked XC compares to something like a braked .308?

Re: 6XC with a 22" barrel?

I am having one built that should be done in two weeks. I decided to start with a 30in Bartlein and a APA LB brake. If it is to long I can always cut it off shorter but not the other way around.

Talk to some of the people who use RL 17 and have had good results getting another 100-200 FPS from their loads.

Re: 6XC with a 22" barrel?

Can't speak to velocity, but your recoil question. My ex-wife had a Valkyrie in 6XC without a brake. The rifle had incredibly little recoil. Less than my 308 with suppressor. You could spot impacts without significant difficulty.

Re: 6XC with a 22" barrel?

I got mine on Monday

27 plus brake. A hair over 3000Fps but it's shooting great I'll take accuracy over speed any day

I love shooting it doesn't move

I’ve had a number of 6xc barrels. Current 24” barrel is doing 2985 with 39.6 gr of H4350 and 105 Hybrid, and this isn’t pushing it hard. Past 26” barrel did 3040 with 40 to 40.2 gr of H4350. I also have a 20.5” barrel that does 2860 with the same 39.6 load. I just used the same ammo in it and it shot really well so I haven’t done anything further. I know I could take that load to 40gr no problem.

I’ve also tried some R16 and the speeds were honestly the same, but if you can fit more in the case then it can start to pick up a little extra...that said it is ,more bulky than H4350. R23 might be worth trying too?

I have done velocity tests with R26 and 115’s and it’s pretty amazing, but not a hot weather powder.

Look at how much drift you’re giving up at slightly lower velocities and ask yourself what’s more important to you. You may only be giving up 0.1 mils at 1000 with 100 FPS slower and 10 mph wind.

I'm on my second 22" 6xc barrel. I run TBAC 338U or 6.5 ultra9.

105 Hy at 2926 with 39.5 h4350
115 Dtac at 2912 with 39.7 h4350

Saw pressure at 40ish and those are the loads that shot best. I've had those loads in rain, heat, snow, you name it. I have buddies that have shot 6xc way faster with other powers but smoke barrels in half the rounds that I do.

I get made fun of by my 6dasher and 6br guys because they're making those velocities in 26-28" barrels with 10gr less powder. I don't think the 100 FPS would have affected my match finishes. I do however believe that the reduced recoil from 10gr less powder may have been worth a place or two.

This is my first match rifle and I got it for $600 so I am gonna make due with what I have untill I know what I like then possibly switch but if I like it just get a longer barrel
