What is the best way to clean my muscle brake? its building up alot of carbon in the ports.....i can take it off, didn't know if was better to clean it with a tooth brush, or take it off and put in some type of cleaner?

If you just HAVE to clean it, hit it with some carbon solvent and a GP brush (or toothbrush).

I've clean mine out this way, I get some seafoam and a tampon. I pull the tampon out of the plastic housing, dip it in a cup with seafoam. With the pull start style string, run that in the muscle brake and let it sit for about 20min. I then give it to my wife and tell her to clean that shit off! I get it back like new

I rigged up a sling to hold my rifle vertical. I then place a cup with carbon cleaner filled up to just before the threads of the break. I let it hang over night, hit it with a brush and clean it off. Good as new. Do not get the carbon cleaner on the threads! If you do and it sits over night it will break down the rock set or loctite on the threads. I know its a bit involved but it works.

can u take it off?
if yes, get a hot plate and a pan and some antifreeze..
put the antifreeze in the pan... heat it till is steaming, drop part in, come back and check it 15min... it will be as clean as if it got sand blasted...

And just what do you think powder residue is if not carbon? The cleaner I use (slip) is also a degreaser. Leaving the breaks threads submerged over night in that will effect the rock set.

Duh...soak it in brake cleaner.
It most likely isn't hurting anything. If it gets real bad, take a chisel to it and knock the big chunks off.
