SBR for home defense? Which ammo and bullets...

I was wondering if anyone is using an SBR for home defense? If so which bullet/ammo are you using? I have a LWRC 8.5" 5.56 PSD upper that I am planning to use it for HD. This is probably too short for 5.56 to fragment so which bullet would be good? Any one has experience with 55 grain Zmax? would it still be too explosive with an 8.5" SBR?

I used a TC Contender for years in .223. (10” single shot pistol). There are 52 gr. soft points that are produced by Hornady to work and open up at short barrel velocities. If you reload, a 60 gr. Nosler Partition works wonders on coyotes and did not over penetrate out of my Contender. Barnes X bullets tend to; penetrate straight, have rapid energy transfer, and open up at low velocity. Your barrel’s twist rate may need to factor into your options.

50 Grain TSX should do very well, I mean your looking at taking a shot inside no more then 12 yards probably?

At 10-12 yards it should still retain most of it's muzzle velocity.

Even suppressed, it will still be very loud and unless they are using a very good flash propellent, it will still be bright, even with suppressor.

This may sound odd and unconventional but if you do plan to use a SBR for HD, then what about keeping a set of high grade/dollar ear protection with it. The electronic muffs I use amplify ambient sound which could be useful while searching your home for intruders, but the muffs then block any sound above 85 decibels, such as gun shots. To me, the amplifying of ambient sound such as voices discussing their intent or helping the identification of an unknown individual in the house is worth it's weight in gold. I mean it's not the worst idea.

I dont agree with all of these assumptions. Sound suppressors of today, while not perfectly quiet, alow for fire in CQB conditions without the HUGE risk of hearing loss. I dont think your concept of electronic muffs is ideal for a often fast evolving high stress event.

Alot of PD's use Speer 62gr Gold Dot, Hornady Tap.

I would be more worried about over penatrating then under even with a 8.5

Velocities are going to be extremely low, personally, I don't see the sense of a barrel less than 10.5" in a 5.56.

I would consider the winchester white box 45 grain varmint load.

The low velocities will allow it to penetrate, but it should still fragment.

I doubt his suppressed 5.56 is any louder than most handguns or shotguns that are unsuppressed and how many thousands of those are sitting in nightstands across the country . An SBR or pistol AR suppressed certainly gives you a whole lot more ammo than most any other options but loud and fire ball are a part of any of these equations regardless of what you choose .

I agree with the electronic muffs not working out in a fast evolving situation but the suppressor comments are not assumptions, I'm speaking from actual use inside shoot houses and live fire exercises. I shoot mostly 10.5"-14.5" guns with and without suppressors. Shooting a 10.5" gun with some of the best suppressors on the market is no fun in close quarters without hearing protection. I've done it, it's a self correcting problem during training. An 8.5" barrel with the average suppressor is still gonna put you in the 130-140 decibel range, that's LOUD, especially in close quarters. One can argue auditory exclusion during a stressful situation but the average person who is not use to training in close quarters can and most likely will unravel after the flash, concussion, and sound hits them. I'd rather run a suppressed .45 with subsonics and a Tac light or a scattergun if your not worried about noise period.

My 10.5" 1/7 Noveske barrel loves 75gr Hornady rounds, they have slightly more recoil but alot of energy transfer on the target. I haven't tested them for penetration yet though.

As far as a suppressor, my M4-2000 is just loud enough in an open field to ring my ears. In a home defense situation I hope I have enough time to get some electric earmuffs on.
