pretty dedicated on leupold. never done me wrong. looking at putting together a 6.5 grendel AR mostly for long range plinking and hunting. anyone ever used a VX3? looking at the 6.5-20x40 with the varmint reticle. would consider other brands too if yall got any suggestions. trying to keep it in a pretty general budget and cant really fork over enough money for a schmidt or night force.

Re: anyone used a vx3?

I have a VX3 on my 7mm Mag, It is very clear, even in low light. Mine is 3.5-10 however, and it is 12.5 inches. At x10 I have 11ft field of view, plenty for speed goat hunting. The 6.5-20, as many high mag scopes has a rather long tube (14.5"), it should have enough elevation (90 moa) for anything you are after, but the 5.6 ft field of view @20 will have you mag'in up and down to follow game.

The Varmint reticle seems pretty nifty in theory, but look over the manual. http://www.leupold.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/BAS_Inst_Manual_17July12.pdf?9d7bd4

Groups A B and C are for cartridges pushing projectiles well over 3000 fps, I believe the Grendal is launching 123's @ 2500-2600 fps. I am not sure the reticle will match up with anything. At least at the two selected mag factors (x12 and x18'ish).

Personally I would look at the 4-14 with CDS, you can use the generic dial and then workup your loads and get the free custom dial. Other than that find a scope with a FFP reticle in either moa or mil and you wont have to worry about mag factor.

Good luck on your build

Re: anyone used a vx3?

I have had several Leupolds over the years, they were always good, clear, return to zero, ect. But I have since moved away from them, due to their lack of keeping up with the game. Their newer lines looked promising till I saw the pricetag, and witnessed a failure after only a couple hundred rounds through the gun.
Calibrated reticles are like extra balls, you think it'll help you out, but its really just a useless fleshy mess under the post. If by some miracle you happen to be shooting the load/bullet/velocity/DA/temperature they designed it for, its great, for those conditions. Same goes for calibrated turrets. Youd be better off with a regular milling reticle and matching turrets. There are plenty of options better than the Leupold, Im a vortex and SS fan. But do what best suits you.

Re: anyone used a vx3?

anyone know if they have a mil version? also is the reticle on the front focal plane? ill do some of my own research but my "tried and true" websites dont seem to have a mil version. I like the SS scopes but last time i was on their site the only variable they had was a 3-9. will have to check back.
