It seems that many of the pros these days are bedding with a short area of support under the shank. Are my observations correct? What is the theory on this? I have a few McMillans coming and I've been happy with my own skills in the bedding department but I'm thinking about changing my process. Thoughts? Thanks!

Re: Bedding trends

Some you see may be deceiving. I know of a few guys that wrap some tape under the barrel, so its not actually touching there. Its just easier to make it look clean by letting the compound flow in front of the lug, then have a dam to stop it from flowing too far forward.

Re: Bedding trends

I think the theory has to do with more support of the barreled action and some to do with changing the harmonics of the barrel.
There are pros and cons to each and many who swear by one or the other.
Plenty of rifles shoot bug holes with and without barrel pads.

Re: Bedding trends

Geoff Corn, who bedded a few builds for me, does both ways. If it is br or tactical oriented he likes to bed 1.5-2" in front of the lug. If it is a pd rifle he doesn't bed infront of the lug. His opinion is that on a tac or br rifle it will not see long strings of fire, a pd rifle will. The bedding supports a heavy barrel but if shot for long strings the barrel heats up and expands. This would cause the poi to shift up on a barrel bedded infront of the lug. Makes sense to me. He bedded my br rifle 1.5" in front of lug, it shoots in the .1s".
