Need a good boresighter

I use the Sight Mark brand for my 223 and 308. I got mine at Academy for what I thought was a reasonable price. They seem to have very positive reviews at places like Optics Planet. Not sure what would differentiate quality in such a simple device. Perhaps brightness of the laser. I usually sight in rifles at a 100 yard indoor range so bright sunlight has never been an issue. Interested in what others have to say as I pretty much impulse shop/bought the ones I have without prior research.
If its a bolt gun, or AR you don't need a bore sight. So what kind of rifle is it, and why do you think you need a bore sight?
Exactly. Set your target out at 100-200 yards; get several sandbags to support the front and back well-- so it sits firmly on it's own, pull the bolt out...stand back about 3-5' behind the rifle...sight through the barrel- center the bull in the center of the barrel...this takes some practice. align the top of the target with the top of the top of the bore- bottom of target with bottom of bore-- left and right, just the same.
now carefully, look through the scope and see where the x-hairs line up...adjust them so they move to the center of the target-- you have to be careful not to move the rifle when you do this--
now fire a shot...you should be on paper
I don't even bother with below 200 yards anymore...typically 3 shots is all it takes.
bore sighters are good but for bolt guns, they're not necessary
I have the Sitemark that I bought many years ago and I have sighted in many guns with it without any problems. Gets me on the paper everytime. It was $150 at the time and I have also allowed many of my friends to use it with success as well. I consider it money well spent IMO.
I use the the look down the bore way
I use the edge of the target board first for windage..Then the top or bottom of the board for elevation
For me that is alot easier than trying to look down the bore and put a target in the middle of what i see.. Just cut what you see in half with the target board and align the cross hairs to that

I have the Site Lite SL-100 Boresighter, which was 99.00 I think from Midway. One of the best gun related purchases I've ever made. Should have purchased one years ago, no more fooling around with trying to get the gun sandbaged in place (and trying to keep it in place) and then getting the bore of the rifle generally on target and then trying to make adjustments, etc, etc. It also will allow you to level your scope's crosshairs with your rail/mount/rifle.
It is fast, easy and accurate. Takes maybe three to five minutes per rifle rifle to use the boresighter. Without fail my first shot is on paper. Usually it is within two or three inches of where I place the crosshairs on the target. I sighted in three rifles including one open sight FAL STG 58, an Aimpoint on an AK, and a Vortex PST 1-4x24 on an AUG in less than 30 minutes last week at the range and spend some of that time talking to friends. My LMT MWS with a Nightforce 2.5-10x32 just zeroed in two shots which is about average. I don't recall needing more than three shots to zero a rifle, even with iron sights. Well worth the money IMHO. Works equally well with scopes, red dots and iron sights.

I won a $10 bet at my gun club last year... that I couldn't be in the black within 2 rounds @ 600 yards with a freshly mounted scope, bore sighting by looking down the barrel.
First round was in the black. 9 ring in fact. Second round was an X.
He hung his head and paid me.
Moral of the story: lasers and magnetic doodads are utterly unneeded.

I use a Site Lite SL-150. While many rifles can be roughly set by looking down the barrel, there are some that are much easier to use a sighting aid such as a Barrett m-99 unless you want to break down the entire rifle to see down the barrel. Even my AIAX was much easier with the tool as you need to fold the stock to pull the bolt. I use the tool to set the rifle up in a hallway and once I get to the range, the rifle is set at 100 yards with no worries.
+1 ^ but if you do, shoot from 25yds first and adjust, then do the same at 50yds then 100yds then you're ready for a thousand....
I tend to do the same thing. it has always been faster for me. walk up pop off a shot, take steps backwards take another in the amount of time it takes you to walk 100 yard and shoot 2-3 times your done sighting in a brand new rifle.
I am biased toward the Site Lite. While I was a composite Producibility Engineer at McDonnell Douglas in the 80's Rich Langner (inventor) was a quallity engineer there. I took photos of his first prototype that used a flashlight bulb and a reflective target.
Fast forward to today with lasers and i still love his product. I introduced a "intel guy" who is a friend to Rich at the Shot show 3 years ago. He was heading back down range to spooky places in A-Stan and had close ties with NSW folks there. Rich gave him a Site Lite with adapter for up to 50cal.
Once the NSW guys got it, they used it to bore site a 50 cal on a RG31. They did it "inside the wire" and then "took it out to the range"
It worked so well they actually wrote a report on it and sent that via my friend to me and i fwd that to Rich. The NSW sent that up their COC and suggeted this should be looked at buy all NSW groups.
I always use mine for everything from 10-22 to 308. You can download a program for selected round and print out a target to use indoors before you head to the range. It has worked well for me.
It will also drive the cats crazy

I would add Site Lite was wonderful customer service too, not that you will likely ever need it. I called them when I was interested in buying one and Rich Langner answered the phone we spoke for close to 20 minutes about the concept, physics and application of his products. Very nice people who make a great product to easily and accurately bore sight your rifles.
I am helping Rich out until he finds his way around this forum. I let him know about this thread and he responded in the Blog section instead of here.

Bushnell #74-3333 has 3 variable spuds and a collimating grid.
Enables diagnosis of many mount problems and scope inconsistencies. Need to prove a scope, do a box-test? Check it on the collimator.
Mount scopes much? Collimator makes it easy.
Swap a scope between rifles? Collimator makes it easy and if you write down your zero can give you repeats.
Best tool for gun work that I ever bought...
