I have had 3 (assembling a 4th now) Ruger MK series and 2 22/45's ; all with Tac. Sol uppers. Every time new shooters come along (women and kids) their Dad always wants to buy it and won't take no for an answer! I am so happy that Ruger finally makes a LITE model. With a mini-redot optic these are a favorite of mine. (Along with an aftermarket trigger)
I think this is a good choice. Another to consider for small hands is the Walther P22.
my vote goes to the SR22. DA/SA, factory threaded barrels available. not very accurate (compared to my MKII target), but sometimes women/kids, feel more comfortable with a smaller gun.
My son - now 10 - has been shooting with me since he was six. He started with .22 rifles. As for pistols, we have had a Walther P22, Ruger single action revolver, and a Browning Buckmark. He also shot by .22 1911. He is a bigger kid and all of them fit his hand well. Out of the group, though, I think he likes the Buckmark the best.
Made it in today today to lay hands on different models. I think the Browning 1911 22 will fit him best. I like the R 22/45 and Browning Buckmark but afraid frame may be a little big. P22 was nice to but am leaning toward 1911. Anybody know how they rank in accuracy. Going to do some research too but interested in everyone's opinion. Thanks.

I started on a Ruger Mark 1 at that age. I would guess a Mark 3 would also be about the same size.

Mine is a 2nd gen 4" Woodsman Sport and still have it. I was about six, and the first handgun I ever shot. Well balanced and excellent trigger. Fortunately, my dad was one that did not ever sell a firearm and he gave it to me when I was about 16.
For a recent manufactured pistol, Browning Buckmark is a great value.
Took the kiddo in to "buy some ammo" and I had owner ask him for a favor. He said we was getting a Christmas present for a boy my son's age and needed his input. He had him handle all available models mentioned here while I was "looking for ammo". The Browning 1911 22 fit him like a glove. My son said he would definitely recommend the 1911. Hoping he is as excited on Christmas morning as I was tonight. Browning 1911 22 it is.

The Browning 1911 is a great little gun. I was able to shoot one and it was a lot of fun, with decent accuracy. This would be a great choice. Best of luck with your decision. Your son will love it and the two of you will have a great time. I still remember the look on my son's face when I gave him is first pistol.
That's exactly what my father started me out with when I was young about 30 years ago.
Started my kids out with the basics of shooting on a revolver... Smith & Wesson Model 34 - would make a great 2nd try.

My wife is a teacher for preschoolers, and she has a giant in her class....so yeah...
Though I don't remember the model number or have the pistol near me, my dad started training us really early on a Smith and Wesson 8 shot revolver.
