Just received a new to me Atlas bipod today. I have no experience with them and have a question.

By turning the knurled knob on the bottom are you supposed to be able to tension all of the slack out?

When I tension the knob as much as possible by hand I still can pan the rifle and I still get a small amount of tilt. I'm used to being able to tighten my bipods solid and this one won't do that. Is my "like new" Atlas pooched?

Any opinions are appreciated.

Looking on the top of the bipod with the QD mount removed. Looks like alot of wear for a new unit?

Ok. I need a few pictures ASAP. I need a better pic of the QD mount, I need a pic of the parts of the bipod when you take the tension system all the way apart. I possibly have some bad news for you, that looks a hell of a lot like the new pan and tilt fake Atlas that I just got in to update the fake Atlas post.

Can you get me a pic of the silver rod that connects the top to the knob and is there any writing on the QD mount. I am betting it has a spring inside and not a stack of cupped washers right? Where did you get this bipod from and how much did you pay?

Actually I will just go ahead and break the bad news to you. I can tell from the pic of the knob and the fact it came in a box that it is indeed a fake bipod. You cannot take a real Atlas apart unless you know what you are doing or get crazy with a strap wrench. I have the exact same one you do on my bar that I received a few days ago to add to the http://www.snipershide.com/shooting...ipment/189402-how-spot-fake-atlas-bi-pod.html thread. These are a little harder to spot than the pan only models but seem to be even worse quality if that is possible.

Yup that's the guts of the one I paid $50 to my door for. I knew some scumb bag would start selling these as the real deal sooner or later. I wish I could've gotten the other thread updated before this happened. Please tell me you paid via paypal or credit card or some way that you can file a dispute.

If you can and do get your money back don't hesitate to get a real Atlas, you won't be disappointed with it.

To answer the OP's question explicitly, as he found he had other issues, the real deal does allow the tilt and pan to be moved while locked down completely, but not without a decent amount of force. Not excessive, but unless you are really driving your face into your stock (I do) it'll stay put. Kasey checked mine out after I thought I screwed it up lubing it and found it was perfectly normal, so I do know they can tilt a bit shot to shot if your muscling them. Though I think this is more about poor form on my part than it is about the bipod.

And on another note, can you dispute charges for firearm accessories on PayPal, given that their policy is that firearms transactions are forbidden (or whatever their deal is)?

Firearm accessories are not forbidden on eBay (PayPal's owner), just firearms and some firearm parts. I actually bought a couple of the fake Atlas bipods on eBay a while back. Both work, but one is better than the other. Usually have to tighten that knob frequently. Only paid $40 for them, so I knew they were fake - even though they were advertised as real. Probably should have reported them but never got around to it.
FWIW, at my last shooting session I shot more than one sub 1/2 MOA groups using my fake Atlas.

I also have a real Accushot monopod, and the difference in quality is night and day. Still probably going to replace the fakies with realies at some point (assuming I don't change my mind and go with something like a GG&G).

260rem, its a fake.

Here is a couple of easy ID clues-

Original USA made Atlas has a plastic cap on bottom of tension knob, FAKE DOES NOT (Fake has one piece tension knob with the "plastic cap" machined into it).

Original USA made Atlas Tension knob will not unscrew, FAKE TENSION KNOB WILL UNSCREW

B&T is working with law enforcement across the US and pressing charges on ALL known / discovered sellers of these fakes making no exceptions. We have also started the "Wright project" to offset a bit of the pain from getting stung like the OP and to gather info on sellers.

We are tracking these, there is no reason for anyone to waste their money getting one to expose them or worse because they are cheaper.....we have 3 here from different sources and all are same quality with same fail points. Its interesting that a gentleman brought one by at SHOT so we had the time to demonstrate the differences and it was literally falling apart by day three, the legs adjust to length but will collapse if bumped in a downward motion, the position pin button came apart, the clamp (FAKE ADM) rotates 360 degrees, the unknown black material on the feet came off both feet and on and on. And the shiny material used for the position plates, I cant identify and hate to say it but that stuff might be aborted baby Chinese girls, cremated, compressed into a sheet then stamped out and dipped into silver paint.....

If you want to help us, when you see a fake let us know. If you buy a fake, let us know where it came from.

Kasey, I can verify the the none tilt model has a plastic cup in the bottom of the knob, the spring washer stack, and the dual threaded rod so that the knob won't unscrew all the way. After seeing pictures of a real one that a member accidentally took apart, I was surprised they did such a good job faking it. When I say good job I mean in terms of the tension assembly looks, not in any way the terms of quality.

Are you saying you have a fake that has a pivot bolt (center rod) with both right hand and left hand threads?

We have seen 4 of them and all have a ALL METAL TENSION KNOB. The original Atlas has a broached Tension Knob and acts like a socket on the tension nut, every FAKE we have seen bypasses this for a threaded tension knob that will un-screw.

Its a a stepped rod but the bottom section is right handed thread not left. They cut two notches in it and flared it a bit so the smaller nut wouldn't back off. The knob is the same at the real deal, the knob goes on and acts as a socket wrench basically and then the smaller nut goes on below it to hold it on, then the little plastic cap. I will strip it apart and PM you a few pictures of the guts when I get home.

Sorry for the double post.

The ADM is also fake, this is one of the easier ways to tell this style of fake. A real ADM mount has light grey lettering and a American flag printed on the side along with some number etched in the top. The fake ones on these are solid black with no markings at all and honestly feel like the poorly made junk that they are.

Good news for me at least. I have my money back. Fake bipod is being sent back to the guy I bought it from and tomorrow morning I'm going to order a new one from Kasey direct.

That is exactly what mine looked like. Could not get it to tighten. I knew something was wrong when I mounted the "fake" onto my Coyote set it on the ground and before I could lay down behind it my rifle tipped over because the entire bipod rotated.
