A-M-E-N. I'm a millennial and am tired of hearing how lazy I am, don't care, blah blah blah, have life so much easier. It's not my fault I didn't grow up during a great depression or black plague. Seems these old guys forget how it really was and like to make up stories about waking up at 2am to feed cows - ok, you may have done that a handful of times but not every day. I'm tired of hearing how you walked 10 miles through the snow, uphill both ways, just to get to school.
Want to motivate a young person? I work hardest for superiors I feel respect me as a person and appreciate the time out of my life I am spending with them. In this age of large corporations, employee loyalty is low, and the way many large employers treat employees is piss poor. What do I expect out of my job? To get it done, so I can afford to do the things I enjoy and to balance those two out.
I like to praise my electricians in front of each other. I chew their ass in private. If they question my authority in front of the other guys then they get straightened out in front of the other guys. I have donuts or kolache's once or twice a week and yes juice boxes for them (that's my personal gig at the young ones).I have fired guys on the spot, went to the van and took their tools off of it and put them on the curb and told them to call their mom to come pick them up. The rest of the crew seemed to work faster that day with their buttholes puckered. I've pulled crews off of jobs and taken them for some badass margarita lunches. I have a BBQ sometimes. I have a meeting every morning to talk about the previous days jobs and the guys like to prove their knowledge of the code by offering up suggestions on the way they would do it or make fun of the guy for screwing up.
I think the main thing to do is tell them their responsibilities and hold them accountable (A MUST) on both sides of the consequences, good or bad. If you threaten to fire them on the next screw up-- fire them. Document everything. Every verbal counsel--- everything. That way they know there is a "record" and there is no questioning or playing it off. They do like to be praised for whatever reason. Instead of me trying to keep up with everybody every day, I have a "love letter" board. Customers send back a report card that I mail them and there's a spot for customer comments and we post them up on a board for everyone to see, good or bad. Everytime someone walks by it there is always laughter. To me it seems that they are always trying to have what my wife calls "Daddy time". They are good kids ( mid to late 20's) that really want someone to treat them like a "daddy" would. Praise them or correct them and teach them. They want to do good in life but nobody taught them how. I don't treat any of them different than my own son (17 and works for me as well). I talk to them and I don't bullshit them and I call them on their bullshit. It makes them happy and all it takes is a little bit of time(how much is in a day) and courtesy. My son said that one of my journeyman asked him what I was like at home. My son said "this place is his 2nd home and he don't act any differently here or there.
BTW Us 35 and older didn't screw up the country or the economy. It's the globalist politicians that were protest leaders in the 60's that are in control of congress right now that have screwed up everything. It's also the braindead leeches that vote for their own benefits that have screwed it up.

As a mellennial that has 6 other mellennials working directly under me and 15+ additional in other departments that have to be helped daily in the healthcare setting; plus when in school managing construction crews it is truly sad how little they think they can do. They have the physical and mental capacity but don't realize that they can or see the benefits if they do. I seriously think the liberal teachers have played a huge role in this problem. The family dynamics at home is also a problem. Role models became felons that get paid way to much for easy work.
My sister is a school teacher and she agrees with me.
The 40% rule is more like the 80% rule with some of this generation.

I am always telling the senior leadership to get down in the trenches more and teach the youngest workers how to work. They don't get it and just pass down messages that we don't meet the metrics every month. Most people in the workforce are either burned-out or a millennial that has no role model.

Went to work at 9 years old sweepin hair and shining shoes for tips in the barber shop . Worked for my dad's general contracting business . Used sledge hammers , pic ax. , digging bar and shovels . In eight years of work I only saw a compressed air jack hammer twice and a backhoe once . I've gone to school continously on my time and my dime while working and after I started a family. My first Jiu Jitsu Comp I had the number two guy in Naga to my right , a UFC fighter to his right , the nuber two midatlantic. Guy on my left and a Pan Am Gold Medalist in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to his left as my opponents . I got arm barred by number two midatlantic guy .
What am I getting at ? My experience of Millenials is the expectation of entitlement with out effort or struggle . Not only do I not experience them going the extra mile . I hear them start pissin and moanin within the first twenty feet .

My rub is the mainstream is pushing that we need how to deal with and motivate the 'Millennial' as if they are somehow different. I posit that they are no different and therefore should not be treated any different. From my experience, a good number of them have never been held accountable for their performance, been told they are special, and got those g damn participation trophies for giving a good effort or showing up. There are some who were not raised with that BS and they are great workers. The 'High Maintenance' ones are retarded in development by what I estimate 10 years.
Before anyone goes full retard on that comment, I mean at 28, they are professionally an 18 year old. I'm willing to bet that quite a few of us old farts thought at 18 we knew it all, and had a better way of doing things, and we were going to show the rest of the world how to do it right. Just move that cocky attitude to 28 from 18.
When I hold people accountable to metrics, some of them freak out because not everyone gets an 'A' anymore. In fact, very few get an 'A', a few more get 'B', and a whole bunch are 'C' performers or just plain average. The 'D' and 'F' candidates got to work for my competitors, where they belong.
I fully expect that the $195 I spent for the webinar is going to be a waste of time and money, but what the heck, every class I attend, I set a goal of learning at least one new thing. Some times I learn more, but it's rare that I don't at least pick up one new thing I can use.
To all you parents who told little Johnny he was special, when he really wasn't, or you weren't crystal clear in explaining that you're always special to mom, all I can say is you fucked up. Plain and simple, you fucked up. Every day, every course, every seminar, and every lesson has a pearl in it. Be it the information, the delivery, the context, the reason it's there, or the audience. One is always better for learning something. It's up to you, to find what the "lesson" is, and its value.

Wet cow tails are the worst. They sting and stink. Been stepped on 3 times. Black and blue toe nails. Kicked about twice. If they are a kicker I jam my head deep in their flank and it makes it hard for them to kick.with any mustard on it. It just pushes you out of the way when they lift their leg. I loved our cows. It is a beautiful animal. Not real smart. Shy and mildly inquisitive. They loved my Dad and several would follow him around when we let them out to go to pasture which made a skirmish cause the shepards thought the cows were being aggressive and would attack the cow to protect Dad. Dad would just try to get out of the way and call off the dogs. Funny to watch. Happened several times. Dad was way tougher than we were. He was freaky strong
We had a cow called White Lightning. She must have been all fast twitch cause she could kick mach 5. Just plain fast. ALL of our cows loved Dad but this one morning WL had a hair up her ass. I had washed her teats down Dad walked in to put on the milker and came flying out sideways spinning. BIG brown hoof mark on his bibs. I said uhhohhhh. He stormed back in the stanchion stall and rammed his head so far in her gut her back leg was off the ground. He slammed a milker on each tit mega hard. WL's back would arch every tit cup Dad slammed on.. Her eyes were big as saucers. . She never touched him again.
We had one that would hang out at the drip hole in the silo and slurp up the fermented corn juice as it squeezed its way down. She'd get looped and stager around but gave more milk that any other. I guess 'shine' is good for cows.
They are cool critters. We had a couple bulls that I became buddies with. One would charge across the pasture everytime he saw me just to get a back scratch.
I truly feel sad for those who grew up in cities and missed all that. Knowing where the food comes from, getting your hands in the dirt, is good education.
I completely agree with your last statement, but the first one is completely misinformed. If you were in a position to ever have to be waking up at 0200 to "feed" (actually that would be milking, but feeding is a part of it), then you would be doing it every day. Weekends included, unless someone was covering for you. There are NO days off on a dairy farm. The workers might get their own individual days scheduled off, but those cows are going to HAVE to be milked twice (or three times, depending on the farm strategy) daily by SOMEBODY. No exceptions. The health of the herd would be threatened if they weren't. Most farms don't have the budget for extra employees, and are (were) mostly run by family members, so yep - every day believe it or not.
I grew up on a beef cattle and hay farm. I thank the Lord I didn't have to work on a dairy farm.

Probly like yourself, We had several farm hands plus a full time herdsmen ,and separate pasteurizer to process the milk for local sale. Dad or a hand and I milked in the morning and afternoon. We did all the farm chores in between. I had Sat and sun off. with sporadic short periods of time to ride daytime. Races on Sunday when able..
All that went to shit during hay season.

I grew up on a 300 acre grain and beef cattle farm... I guess I've always just worked and never known any different. If my boss asks me to do something, I get it done, plain and simple.
Never really paid people to do anything for me. Framed houses while I was going to college, learned that trade pretty well and now do odd jobs on the side. Built my own house, built a few barns, remodeled a lot of things.
Not sure what impact the farm had on me, but I'm thankful for the experience and knowledge I gained there... very thankful we still have them too.
I see plenty of millenials that suck, but I see plenty of baby boomers, gen x and gen y'ers that suck too. I don't know that there's really an end all fix to lazy people, some I'm convinced just can't be motivated.

Millienials are different..ex: My spouse grad of U of Penna. Med School. Alum bulletin this quarter had an article on mill. med . students..the Dept of Medicine had to hire an Anthropologist to figure ways to teach, correct them in a private environment alone and not before their peers..
The previous teaching would be to ask a random student on teaching rounds at the patient's bedside a specific question..Socratic method, and in the past the fear of being embarrassed and unprepared kept the students on their toes ; they prepared for the experience . Often they currently stare at their smart phones during rounds... ...now this prior method of public questioning is called "Pimping" and the mill. will not tolerate it.. if so, U are creating a hostile environment, can be reported and disciplined...God forbid you ever raise your voice....

I've talked to some of these millennial docs and it's a disaster. I had one a few months ago who couldn't tell be the difference of hydromorphone, hydrocodone, oxycodone, or oxycontyn. Do you wonder why one of the reasons for the opioid problem in this country? It starts with the lose nut on the pen writing the script.
The previous method worked fine. Sure, some people got their feelings hurt, but they either got better or they got out, and that was better for the rest of us.

I guess I'm considered a Millenial (Born in '87), my full time job is emergency services which I wouldn't consider hard work until it requires hard work. My part time job is instructing new fire fighters and medics. I've found that motivating millenials can be difficult but the most effective tactic has been using the already motivated ones to police the bad ones. If that doesn't happen then the one on one conversations start. I've also found that basic dignity and respected are a given, not earned. Above all, daily goals seems to work the best. Every class period has a goal. At the end of class we go through what went well and what can be worked on. Successes are a team effort, failures are addressed on an individual basis.
I'm consider a millennial and I work as a construction materials tester/surveyor/inspector depending on the day and what needs to be done. When I'm at work money motivates me I'm willing to do just about anything that is safe enough to insure I get to see my family at night, but I don't need people kicking me in the ass to get things done either. I have very little patience for someone that is incompetent at doing their job no matter their age.
One thing I have noticed is guys my age and younger seem to be better adults when they had a hands on active father figure or mentor. My father was and still is very active in my life. We live 1500 mile apart, I have a wife and two young boys, I often feel like if I screw up my dad will step around the corner a whoop my ass. I have had several mentors throughout my working career and the knowledge I have gotten from them I'm extremely greatful for. Teaming up some of the more willing older employees with some of the younger guys can be very helpful in knowledge transfer as well as expections from the employer.

I'm afraid it may soon look like what fx77 described at med school. To me that is horrifying. It doesn't get more life-and-death than that. If they're willing to look the other way and cater to them in that situation, there isn't one I can think of that won't eventually fall to the same fate. The whole idea he described of the millennials "won't tolerate it" indicates that the problem is with the school and not the students. You don't EVER let them dictate to you what they will or won't tolerate. You tell them how it's going to be. "If you want to be a doctor, you will learn it. If you don't, there's a thousand more behind you that will when we give them your slot." This is just plain stupid, completely preventable.
I hear what you are saying but the butthurt comes from the fact that we have raised "our" children the right way, learned from our mistakes and do things the right way and have worked our asses off to get things done and to get to where we are at. There are 2 facts here. 1) We should not have to teach them how to fish. 2) Society has been degraded so much that we have to teach them to fish to get anything done.
Stomping on the worst ones tend to line out the others. The M's tend to redefine words and meanings though, so what they consider "stomping" is just old school "corrective action".
Although they left out "Cultivate a good work ethic" these suggestions are pretty good for child raising.

Another thing I've noticed in my students, is that if you let them see why things are done the way they are done and what can happen if they are not done that way versus the benefits of doing a task the prescribed way, things get done much faster and to a higher standard.

It’s back-to-school time, America. As a courtesy to parents sure to be frustrated with their children’s infuriating Common Core homework, Buffalo, N.Y. NBC affiliate WGRZ has published a series of helpful videos.
The first of the six videos informs parents about the new way to add 9 + 6. Parents could be in for a surprise if they are merely familiar with the old, boring way, which is to reinforce that “9 + 6 is 15” again and again until it becomes second nature.
“With the Common Core, students need to understand why” 9 + 6 equals 15, a bubbly WGRZ reporter explains.
Fourth-grade teacher Eileen Klag Ryan then demonstrates the Common Core way to add 9 + 6.
This Common Core method takes nearly a minute.
“Our young learners might not be altogether comfortable thinking about what 9 + 6 is,” Ryan relates. “They are quite comfortable thinking about their friend, 10.”
The novel addition method emphasizes 10 for younger students “as we’re working in ‘Base 10 System.'”
“So if we can partner 9 to a number and anchor 10, we can help our students see what 9 + 6 is.”
At no point does Ryan explain how this impressively complex method of adding 9 + 6 will lead students to any understanding of “why” 9 + 6 is 15.
“We’re going to decompose our 6,” the teacher continues, drawing two small diagonal lines under the 6, then adding a number 1 and a number 5.
“We know 6 is made up of parts,” she instructs. “One of its parts is a 1 and the other part is a 5.”
Then, things get super-complex.
“We’re now going to anchor our 9 to a 1, allowing our students to anchor to that 10″ Ryan says, while drawing a big, oblong circle around the 9 and the 1.”
“Now our students are seeing that we have 10 + 5,” she declares confidently. She stutters a bit and adds, “Having, uh, now more comfort seeing that 10 + 5 is 15. That’s much more comfortable than looking at 9 + 6.”
Earlier this month, Canada’s National Post reported that a group of neuroscientists has issued a study finding that rote memorization of discrete math facts plays a critical role in mathematical development in young children.
In short, the study found, memorizing multiplication tables and answers to basic arithmetic problems is cognitively vital because, without such memorization, children will have a much harder time later on with complex math problems.
Common Core, a scheme to homogenize various K-12 standards around the country, has faced a growing wave of opposition since 45 states and the District of Columbia began implementing it last year. Opposition has brought together conservatives who are opposed to centralized, one-size-fits-all public education and leftists who deplore ever-more standardized testing.
Perhaps the best example of Common Core’s sharp focus on “why” in math came last summer when The Daily Caller exposed a video showing a curriculum coordinator in suburban Chicago perkily explaining that Common Core allows students to be totally right if they say 3 x 4 = 11 as long as they spout something about the necessarily faulty reasoning they used to get to

Bro, if youre a teacher, how do you doeal with this bullshit....I mean whats wrong with knowing the value of 9 and the value of 6 and just combining them to get 15. Takes me .5 seconds (if that) to do the old way but I told this way takes 54 seconds. WTF//?
I'm not an elementary, middle or high school teacher. I'm fortunate enough to teach fire fighters and EMTs students at the local tech school as my part time job.
I've also noticed that millenials ask "why" and ignore advice quite often but not out of arrogance, in my experience, but out of a need to learn for themselves why a method does not work?
You're right. They have to sink or swim at sometime. That's part of their learning. Many have never been allowed to fail so often times they do fall on their face and often I shake my head. But most don't repeat the same mistake.
DISCLAIMER: The millennials I see, generally want to be there so I don't often see the worst of the generation that most of see and work with. On occasion we get the candidate that is in the fire program because their parents or councilor pushed them into the career field. They generally weed themselves out in the first couple of weeks or realize it's a great career and come into line.
I guess squeaky wheels get the grease. I rub elbows with quite a few 20ish - 30ish guys on a regular basis. They're not snowflakes. Most are operators. I have two boys, 34 and 26. Both are productive members of society taking care of their families. Both are continuing there education. I think what we're seeing is the fringe of the current generation combined with a natural part of growing up...challenging the older generation.

As for what's wrong with learning the value of 9+6, nothing, except memorization isn't really learning to think. A monkey can be trained to memorize and respond with the correct answer, but they are not able to take that memorized information and apply it outside of the context in which it was "learned". The new system focuses on teaching children how to approach a problem and use reason and logic to solve it. Your example is for young children, so it looks absurd because of the simplicity of the equation. Apply the same method to 15 digit addition sets and you can start to see the value. It isn't fundamentally different than 9 over 6 "carry the 1", but it more clearly teaches "why" you "carry the 1". Memorization takes a long time to teach/learn. Children these days have to learn a great deal more information than you did before they reach college. Advanced mathematics aside, just the technical info they have to know to do their homework is astounding. My 9yo nephew had to repair some registry errors (on the tablet his school issued him) last week just to submit his assignment. Teaching them to think a problem through is faster and more valuable than teaching them to regurgitate number sets.
As for the basis of this thread, all you really need to know is that there has been a fundamental shift in the way the younger generation views work. You old guys were raised to view your work as a defining part of your character. Work hard, keep your nose clean, and everything will be fine. This generation was starting/preparing for their careers right as the rug was pulled out from under them by gen w/x. They watched as their parents nest egg, house, and retirement accounts vanished due to the poor decisions of borrowers/lenders they don't even know. What then was the value of Dad's 70hr work weeks if you can lose everything (including Dad's job) because of "market forces", outsourcing, and globalization? Your generation lived to work, theirs works to live. They would rather enjoy life than strive for a future enjoyment that may never come. Welcome to the global economy. You old guys can resume your war stories about how nobody works as hard as you did.
