Maggie’s Military Jeopardy

At least I got the vise part right.
As to the bomb, with all of the different cuts on it, I would guess maybe a snake eye or nape type bomb, maybe fuel/air.
I was a lowly Grunt so never around anything like that other than to see what happened on the ground.
What is the country of origin? I didn't know shit about Mill's bombs. FM

Strykervet, The "girls" would come out with an easel and a board with felt or something like that on it and the games would be "Pin the Tail on the Donkey" or some such shit as that.
Meant to be set up in front of a bunch of guys and entertain them.
The "girls" would be in short skits/pantsuits and meant to take your mind off of bad shit that had gone down. At least they tried.
I would always tell my squad to GTFO of there as too many milling around was a target and we had more important things to do.
Check out China Beach TV show from back when. It kind of tells it like it was. FM

Hey, thanks, that's interesting. I guess like you said, they tried. But I've heard of them doing egregious shit, like taking money from soldiers and such. Some older vets REALLY hate 'em.

As for the Mills Bomb, it's just a British hand grenade. I knew it was a fuse of some type, figured it was an early delay fuse. I knew it wasn't US and knew it wasn't German or some other designs but also didn't know exactly which either... and the hints he gave narrowed it down some. So I looked up pictures of delay fuses for early hand grenades and that one was it. I knew what it was, but not exactly which one until I saw the picture of a cutaway. It was a tough one.

This arming device is turning out to be pain too. Australia, huh?

Strykervet, Count me in with the Older Vets that hated them.
As I posted, I only encountered them once on a forward LZ and quite frankly was pissed to see them there. We had enough problems going on and needed NO distractions.
I did see them in the rear with the gear areas when I was fortunate enough to be able to go there on a sham. I had nothing but distain [disdain] for them and the Red Cross and that holds to this day.. I think that maybe the Cookie Cunts were HOs for the O types, but they wouldn't do anything like that being Officers and Gentlemen.
I was hoping that other Vets from my era would chime in but maybe there aren't enough of us. I am sure there are some very colorful stories from them.

Barney, You have me by the "danglies" on what this widget is.
I hope someone can come up with an answer. This has been a fun thread and has covered all kinds of neat shit. I have really enjoyed it. FM

Wouldn't be a cluster bomb/mine dispersing unit would it?

That's where my head was at too, especially after Barnie said it had been removed from service. I remember seeing demos of the CBUs and being properly impressed. Wasn't it Slick Willy that caved to pressure to remove them? since hugely effective weapons are impolite to our enemies and all that.

Barney, Good on you. I have read all I can find on Woomera and the origin of the name. Quite the area you have there doing God only knows what.
Going with the original meaning of the word Woomera, being a throwing stick if I read correctly, our word would be Atlatl.
This has been a good research project and I like it. Seems like your Area 51.
With that said, I think the zoomerino you pictured is a safety device conjured up by libtards to keep the abbos from throwing sticks etc. in the wrong direction only to save the children. And they may have saved one but it is questionable.
In other words, I dunno what the fuck that is but I have enjoyed using your only clue. I learned a lot. Regards, FM

How about that, Barney has work ethics and will wait until he is at home to reply, not on his employer's dime.
This comes as no surprise to me as anyone who can spin a really good nasty joke is GTG with me and shows some good up bringing.

Thanks for the ego boost FM, finally home now, unfortunately my time zone makes it awkward to make timely responses on here (gmt + 10.5 at the moment). The term "clusterfuck" could have been born from this project, it was used a few times, especially when politics closed us down. The type of device is not unique to Australia, our development of it included several unique improvement.

Do you mean bomb, or bomblet? It seems small enough to be the arming or detonating pin for a small bomblet. Then again, it could be the airfoil of a bomblet too I suppose...

It is the arming pin for a CBU bomblet, back in the 70's down here in Aus we were looking for an improved version of the CBU 58 and decided to build our own. The strange machining on the straight part ensured the pin came out slowly and ensured separation between the bomblets so they did not detonate each other as they dispersed. Bonus points if anyone can actually identify the weapon.

Looks like it could be Hitlery's new buttplug. Using it would leave her cave of doom open for exploration. Eeeewwwww!

Good job Barney.
I learned a lot on this one like what Woomera is and I read about CBUs etc. from down under and the treaty you guys got caught up in that rendered all of your work and research moot.
Is that the Cluster fuck you meant? It was a good question and entertained me for hours looking for that clerenderm..
Now, somebody put up a new question. This thread has been a lot of fun. FM

You guys have the airplane right. Spad is in there as far as what the airplane was called. As to what they [the missions] were called, keep looking. I will cut a little slack on what they spread but they [the pilots] had a word for it.
To us on the ground it was known as piss and scungon or in other words a bad time for the gooks.
Here is your clue...One of the first and better pilots had a dog and used that dog's name as a call sign. The name stuck.
PS.. Where is Sihr? I thought he would be all over this for an easy win. Is he OK? FM

Close enough.
The call sign was Sandy or if plural Sandies. and 1 thru 4 or more depending on what was needed. That man must have loved his dog.more than anyone could know. The call sign stuck and they were always known as Sandy.
They flew the missions to protect downed flyers with the SPAD that could take more hits than anything else. They could loiter in an area for as long as it took to get the Jolly Green Giants in and do a lift out.and kick ass as needed. The airplane was heavily armed and packed a metric shit ton of WhoopAss and they used it freely to protect the downed flyers on the ground.
They would spread out "gravel" that were small antipersonnel mines kind of like toe poppers but did carry a lot of ordnance other than that. Need I say more than WhoopAss?
I got to hear them from the ground as a Grunt as we prepared to go to crash sites and do what we could do.
Cav has Been, we were hooking up with your Blues on things like this. Most went well but there were some sad sites as well.
FM E Co. 5/7 Cav RVN 69/70
Next question???
PS Where is Sihr?

Cav Has Been, I am going to go with the Cessna O-1 Bird Dog. A pusher puller that shot Willy Pete rockets to mark for the fast movers. Known to carry a few HE rockets as well for targets of opportunity.
There were also the O-2 Skymasters and OV-10 Broncos as well.
Am I getting close? FM
PS Where is Sihr Mechanic? It is not like him to not be on this like stink on shit. I hope he is doing OK.

B-26K/A-26B Counter Invader ?

Pretty well nailed it guys. B26K / A26A The infamous "B" designation offended too many so it was changed to an "A" designation as "Attack" was much more politically palatable than Bomber. Great airplane in any case!!!

FM,The O2 was the push me pull you critter, we referred to them as the Cessna Mixmaster. The O1 was single engine, OV-10, twin turbine, Bad MOFO, hotrod, many times packed some HE as well as WilliePete.

Wasn't Sihr going on Moose safari or some such?

Ya, I put out a PM and Sihr is fine and doing well hunting in SD. I had missed a few post on other threads, my fault, but I was just checking up on a poster I missed. I hope he does well on his hunts. I hope he gets some chislic while there.
Old Farts tend to do this 'specially if he rides motorsickles. You never know, sometimes you find them when reading the Obits. FM
