Last evening I went to a party at by buddies new home.
In the finished lower level he has a full size PGA golf simulator. I was impressed with the reality of the set-up. Full swings, measures club head speed, distance of shot and scores for you. You are able to purchase many different courses that replicate the real life course in great detail. It replicates the wind, and other features of a real course like rough, sand traps and water.
It got me thinking that a top level shooting simulator would be super cool. If it can be done with golf, it must be possible to replicate, hunts, target shooting and even trap or skeet with a laser system. His was a PGA system and I assume super expensive, but as winter is here it made me think how cool such a shooting based application would be as a trainer.
Probably would be tricky to design something that is realistic, with bolt operation, and perceived recoil, but is must be possible. Perhaps is is already available in some form?
If not cut me in on the profits geeks!!

The best golf sims run about $55K.

Those guys don't do a very good job showcasing what they've got.

Based on Mk1 it looks like you'll have to fight simulated sway, as well.

I'd much rather base a system like that on Virtual Battle Space 3 and have position sensors so that your input is the ONLY input on the weapon.

ETA: I guess, judging by their PDF, it must be VBS3. If that TitanIM stuff is as cool as it sounds (scenarios in any part of the world), that just might be some DD size tits. Might have to tweak it a lot to get the realism down, though.

BTDT too.

They had this stuff in 2000. Right next to the Ranger chute training area on the back side of range road at Ft.Lewis is a metal clad building that sorta doesn't belong. That's the simulator. The small one.

They built a new one and it must have cost a fortune (we were told over a million but I don't know how much exactly) because it's inside the airfield, not by the ranges. I think it's in the same building as pilot simulators, so maybe that has something to do with it.

Anyway, it's a HUGE screen, the whole wall. There's a little hill with astroturf on it where you lay. You get down with your squad or team or whatever and the room gets dark and the screen lights up and the size gives it AMAZING depth. It's nuts. The entire thing is programmable, number of enemy, accuracy of contact, time of day, etc., etc. Some were setup like real missions for training. Supposedly SF used it like this, they obviously had a lot of time with it according to the programmer. The scenarios ranged from easy to fucking impossible. Pretty much any map could be built so if you did want to use it to train for some mission, you could. But again, the usefulness in that capacity is reduced because you remain static.

The weapons had gas tubes connected to the muzzle and the magazines had a chip in it and were wireless. All sorts of things could be programmed in like weapon malfunctions (the gas actuator would make it happen) mag changes, etc. Some people didn't like it but I always got a kick out of the simulator. It's no replacement for training and I can't really see it's value with an infantry unit, but it was a shitload of fun and I'd not turn it down. FIST simulators were fun too, and I was always really good at call for fire.

They’ve come a long way since “the Weaponeer” back in the 80s! Cheers, Sirhr

Weaponeer... I'd forgotten the name! Holy shit Sirhr I almost forgot about that goddamn thing! The M16 pinball machines! Oh shit! I had to "train" Lebanese officers on those at Ft. Benning at SOA while waiting for Abn. school... STILL had 'em in 2000-2001! I still want one for the house. Who wouldn't?

No, what I'd like to see, and what we need, is a VR version where you can wear your gear and use YOUR weapon. No big screen. Soldier wears a gas bottle to operate the rifle, or else blanks or simmunition. With miles or some shit like miles. Maybe one that also uses the natural terrain. Because if you can't "shoot, move, communicate," it's not very useful training.

A buddy bought an AIS/PRISM system and it allows you to use real guns with modified barrels and springs to shoot ammo loaded with air.
Its slaved to a screen, computer, and sensors which track you.
Various scenarios are loaded and play like an interactive movie. Over the screen is a paintball gun thst shoots solid plastic paintballs at the same time the "bad guy" in the movie shoots at you. They will bust your knuckles if they hit you.
