Good afternoon,

Curious to hear what all others have seen break during training or comps in the category of: the rifle or optic.

I have only had a reticle go south, and luckily that happened at home.

*edit* - I did have a slam fire from a trigger being too light. My fault though.

We read a few comments here or there on the net, and sometimes it turns into a "witch hunt".

A few things that come to mind:

1. Remington's extractor fails
2. Remington's action not having a side bolt release (it's a complaint or observation depending on who you listen to)
3. Tikka's bolt stop pin breaking
4. Savage action having extraction issues ( I witnessed at a comp)

Please share only what has happened to you or you saw first hand.

I am thinking the ladies and gentlemen who compete probably shoot more than anyone else, so they would be the best source to ask.

I am only a casual competitor.

Thank you for playing along.

ThunderBeast 30P-1 end cap weld fail and disappeared down range. Baffles where fully intact w/o a strike. Unit was returned to TB and fixed immediately.

ATC AR Gold trigger failed to reset repeatedly. Had to withdraw from the match. Eventually traced it to a sear plunger that had corroded and wouldn't provide consistent engagement of the sear. Unit was refurbed by ATC.

Remington bolt lug shear off the bolt. When extracted everything was fine but next found wouldn't go into battery.

Have watched many competitors succumb to heat injury. They were not keeping up with fluid intake.

Andrew

Trigger failures from pretty much every brand trigger.
Bolt stop pins shearing off on multiple actions.
Broken extractors/ejectors
LaRue OBR going high order from a squib
Gas guns doubling due to faulty/too light triggers
Bolt guns slam-firing due to too light triggers
Case failures locking up a rifle
Case head separations locking up a rifle
Ruger bolt shroud coming loose, locking up bolt
Multiple optics stop tracking or develop wandering zero

you mean other then some guys tripping/stumbling because they look like the state puff marshmellow with all the bags hanging off them.

seriously though, mags seem to be a big issue.

and then me just being a spaz/brain fart

Happened to me with bolt gun: 2 broken firing pins, 3 broken extractors, 1 broken cocking piece to firing pin pin, jewel trigger locked up, one time the triggertech didn’t hold the cocking piece back, and had a budget scope tracking completely fail.

With a precision AR15 setup I had an out of battery discharge and blew up a gun at a match.

I’ve seen a bunch of stuff go down at matches firsthand, mostly associated with guys running factory Remington or Savage actions. Although seeing a cheap scopes objective lense fall out was pretty memorable.

Mags is the most common I’ve seen. See it at least once every match. Saw another guys action screws come loose. Real Loose. He couldn’t hit shit and finally realized it. Tightened them up and was back in business

Personal experience. Left a chamber flag in like a dummy cause I was too busy thinking about a tricky stage at a local match. Cost me some time trying to correct it. Had a reticle break loose on my scope at another local match. Couldn't hit crap, dialing, holding, you name it. Bolo'd every stage after the first stage. Never been so embarrassed in my life. Placed dead last. Sent in my scope and Vortex returned it saying "reticle was loose and wouldn't hold position or adjust". Seems that the erector assembly broke after dialing on that first stage and I was SOL at that point.

I too forgot to remove my chamber flag, tried chambering a round on it, then caused a double feed, drop magazine, clear chamber, lost time, cost me some points, but I did manage to still hit some steel.

I had a scope rail come loose on me at a match, and then at another match the action screws came loose.

Live and learn.

I think a better question would be:

Is there anything someone hasn’t seen or heard of going down?

Only thing that comes to mind is triggertech trigger or an AI factory trigger.

Though I’m sure someone here has had or has seen that too. I’ve seen or heard of most everything else going down.

I know I've seen at least one TT fail at a match.

With all due respect, you seriously need a new (gun)smith!

Frank has his stock AI trigger go down, along with about 4 other AI’s if I recall correctly at a class. Only action that didn’t go down was a Mausingfield. Everything will go down at some point.

Savage scope base coming loose repeatedly, shitty weak ejection (even with the SSS "bolt parts upgrade"). Tubb T7T trigger not reset, scope no longer holding zero. I've never personally seen a Remington extractor fail but carrying a spare doesn't hurt. They will fail and they're a wear item. I've never seen a factory bolt stop break, and the only way I see that happening is by slamming the bolt into it repeatedly. I see that as unnecessary.

My 2 SA Rem700's can swap bolts and headspace correctly. One has a Criterion Remage barrel and the other is a factory varmint profile barrel. Neither receiver has had any truing done. I'll carry a spare bolt at the big matches.

Exactly. Murphy needs pleased something fierce.

I read his post and was thinking no one could have that bad of luck... with the same parts!

It happens. Surgeon recommended I send my bolt to them to convert small firing pin to large but I just carry a whole spare bolt now. And the Remington style extractors are super easy to replace in the field when you break one.

Oh wow it is a Surgeon. Small firing pin, gotcha. That makes sense then.

I've never had to replace one, so maybe there's a trick I am not aware of, but I'd think a riveted extractor wouldn't exactly be easy to replace in the field.
Mines not riveted. But I can see how that would make it impossible to do at a match.

Edit: just checked. Both bolts I have are drilled for the rivet, but neither actually has a riveted extractor. I’ve only changed the extractor on the original bolt.

Wait, I forgot you were talking about a Surgeon action. I was thinking a factory 700 bolt.

- had an APA gen 2 lil bastard that would like to come loose at the most inopportune times
- my first rifle, GAP Crusader, had a Defiance Rebel action which would bind up at the sight of dust
- the above scope rail came loose 2nd last stage of a PRS match
- I somehow loaded up ammo once which was a bit too long for the above action and it's feed ramp - that was a fun PRS match ? (same match that the scope base came loose)
- seen numerous ARC mag issues
- a common issue i've seen is not resetting your scope back to zero after a stage, and left on the wrong "rev". Has caused many frustrations for people in matches.
- wandering or incorrect zeros

I've seen multiple AI's go down ?

I'm sure I've seen plenty more, just need to remember them.
