I know you don't need to neck turn much anymore, but wondering how much is usually taken off
( in thousands) not skim turning but to get a nice clean looking neck turn?

With Winchester 243 brass about a thou and a half will get you 80% to a full cut on the older stuff.
New is almost 2 thou.
I know the best would be to neck turn virgin brass but please help me to remember .., do I need to do full sizing of virgin brass or just to run expending mandrel few times on unsized virgin brass ? Which is the correct way ?

You can do it either way.

I actually like to fire the brass once before cutting it.
I seem to get a more uniform cut and slightly less overall cut and it gets sized more accurately by my mandrel.

Any weird peaks get shmushed down first and brass fits onto turning mandrel perfectly.

I then slightly oversized (.003-.004 instead of my normal.002)the neck with either a bushing or in my cast an undersized pin in my lee collet.

Then I run a mandrel in the neck which pushes irregularities to the outside and sizes it for the mandrel in my neck turner.

I am interested. Can somebody post what are the typical brass neck thickness of Lapua and Hornady? Is premium brass are thicker? I don't have tools to measure accurately and the reason for this post. Thks.

Ideally achieving .014 finished neck would be great.
I've found with even lapua in different calibers the neck wall thickness isn't a given.
I like to knock this portion of brass work out on virgin brass in the initial prep.
With a good turning device and procedure it can be done well and fast.

I almost bought a handheld neck turning setup a while back but then realised I had a little more accurate machine to do it already sitting in the workshop. Some new necked down Remington 7 SAUM brass below being turned for .002" clearance for the original GAP 6.5 4S reamer:

Nice.

I have a nice Hardinge lathe at work I’m tempted to start turning brass in.

In this picture might be what you're lookin for:

It's a Lee case trimmer chuck. I use it to push the cases onto the mandrel and back it off before turning. When they are done I wind it in, lock it onto the case and pull them off. The chuck is pretty light duty but there's not a lot of tension between the case neck and mandrel so it works fine.
