Invite new Gun owners to the range in 2021
Minuteman
I few years ago I had to renew a Nevada CCW...... about 1/3 of the class check in with a .410 handgun....
Do you own one? thoughts on the platform?
What am I missing?

I got my Dad a Judge 45LC/410 for Xmas about 5 yrs ago. He mostly keeps it as a night stand/HD gun loaded with 45LC. Occasionally though he’ll bring it when we go hunting or hiking around in the mtns. Last year he almost stepped on a prairie rattlesnake when we were packing out his bull elk, but he decided to let it go. I do think the 410 would be a nasty round for these rattlesnakes here.

They are excellent choices for carry around the ranch/farm or while hiking. 1st and 2nd rounds of #4 or #6 shot then follow on rounds can be self-defense loads.
Don't poo-poo the 410. When loaded with buckshot or slugs, it is quite deadly.
The buckshot loads likely won't be accurate beyond 10 yards or so.
We had a guy here in town fooling around with a little 410 derringer. didn't know how to clear it. Shot through the center of his palm and killed his buddy that was standing a few yards away.
I would prefer the 3" chamber, though it looks a bit unwieldy.

For the defense side of things, I think it gives the perception of less training/fundamentals to hit your target. False confidence. Gun counter BS for the new handgun owner. If I were a gun manufacturer trying to sell a better mouse trap, it makes sense.

But I’m not, therefore it doesn’t.

I did not want to pee on anyone's wheaties in the class....

My assumption is that they are not taking training to learn how to become a better shot... I'm all for legal CCW/CHL.

I just wished more people who are not happy with their square range results.... would seek out a path to get better...

How is the pattern on these with something heavy enough to kill a snake? is the pattern dense enough to work?

For CCW, there's way better choices for the size and weight.

Home defense or as a truck/car gun seems more appropriate. Or a ranch/hiking gun. I would carry OWB though.

That’s really where they should work best. Drivers seat to passenger window or a little outside. With the shells designed for them they’d be wicked at that range.

I like the killing belly crawlers with it. I hate a damn snake.

I really can’t see any reason to buy one.
The shotshells for 44mag and 45lc offer better payloads than the 21/2” 410
Even the 38/9mm is comparable.
Plus you can get them in better and more portable pistols.

I usually carry those to match whatever pistol I'm carrying.
.357 Mag or 9mm or .40 or .45

They now have 2 different pellet sizes from CCI

Care to share your reasoning behind this? I'm having a hard time seeing a 150gr shot load (best case for CCI 45LC) equated to a 1/2oz (219gr) 410 Much less a 38 or 9mm. Is it a shot size issues or what?

I'm looking at a Ruger LCRx in 22wmr for around the property for rattlers. Seems like a good compromise for short range. If not, I would just go with whatever 12ga I have on hand with cheap clays loads. It’s not really a big deal to me as I use a good pair of snake tongs and an axe to dispatch problem snakes, it’s much cheaper and quieter. Not to mention no worries about ricochet.

Whaat? Shoot a 410 birdshot load from a Judge vs a 9mm or 38sp CCI shotshell and tell me there isn’t a difference in power. I recently got my dad a Taurus Public Defender for ranch use and the amount of recoil surprised me., like in the same class as my SW 629 snubby.
