I’ve decided on the NightForce ATACR
4-16x42 for a 16” Recce build, Compass Lake barrel, @bigjake83 is putting together for me. I know it will be super accurate and think the dot in the Mil-c and Mil-xt are better suited for paper punching and steel at distance. I plan for this to be my primary go-to rifle for general use around my property as well...hunting deer/hogs/varmints, riding along in the UTV etc. At low power (4-6) do the Mil-r, -c, -xt all pretty much look the same? especially illuminated? ie a small red/green ‘t’. The -r and -c both have the upside down T shaped measurements in the lower right quadrant...is that more or less a visual impairment/distraction compared to the dots of the -xt? Or do neither bother you much (high or low power)? I have no plans to compete or do prs (2 young kids) but would like to take some classes at some point.

My gut has been the ATACR over the zp5 and AMG, center dot over cross, and specifically -xt > -c > -r...but would like some specific feedback as mentioned above.

Finally, the Mil-r is much easier to find second hand and is generally $400 cheaper...that’s a lot of ammo. Does that sway the decision for a long term purchase?

Thanks all.

I have an ATACR with Mil-XT and an NXS F1 with Mil-R. Don’t get the Mil-R and go with the Mil-C. I love my Mil-XT but on a 556 platform, I think the Mil-C would do you better for clarity and speed.

If I were to buy an ATACR 4-16x42 for my AR, it would be with the Mil-C. Bolt guns slinging a larger caliber (in my case a 308)? Mil-Xt all day.

The Mil-R doesn’t bring anything to the table. Center dot is money.

In the 5-25 or 7-35 I would look at the mil C or mil XT. But the 2/10 marks might be hard to appreciate in the middle mag range of a 4-16. I would encourage you to look through one first to see how your vision works out with 2/10 marks at those magnification ranges. I think the Mil R would be more usable personally, with it's half mil marks.

I agree that for the 4-16 MilR is the better choice. I have all three reticles. For the 7-35 the mil xt for sure, or mil c.

I have all 3 and they all work just fine. The Mil-C had kinda become my favorite but probably because I used it a bit more than the others. The Mil-R was my favorite before that and the XT may become my favorite after my match this weekend - I'll be using it exclusively and have found it to be a great reticle in practice this week. I found the learning curve to be very shallow and have adapted to it easily.
