Advice on a bolt rifle that shoots 5.56?

Don't discount a .223 if you find one cheap. You can get a .223 checked to see if it will run as a .223 Wylde, or get it worked to run as a Wylde. Then you can use .223 or 5.56 when you are ready. Always verify the twist rate before you buy.

I have a Remington 700 SPS Varmint but Remington says only shoot 223. I have a ton of .56 and dont really want to buy more 223. Thats why I just want to know what will shoot 5.56. What would need to be done to make it shoot 5.56? Not interested in reloading, I just want to shoot the SOB. Ive found youre usually better to get something thats designed for what youre going to use it for rather than modify something else. Id really just like suggestions on ready to shoot bolt rifles that shoot 5.56. My intended use is target shooting. Ive learned the Savage isnt that accurate...,7 MOA and Id like better.
I was suggesting checking the .223 chamber with a knowledgable source. Since it may be a mass produced weapon the potential for it to be able to run .223 Wylde could allow you to run 5.56mm. I feel your pain with the whole .223/5.56 rounds. I have an awesome .223 Remington Tact XCR that drives home the money. I want to do the same sort of thing as you do. Run 5.56mm in my bolt Remmy. I asked the same sort of question awhile back getting responses that suggested getting it checked to see about running .223 Wylde/5.56mm. I'm not suggesting to modify it to run 5.56, just get it checked and advice at that point. Plenty of people here mod stuff for other than it's intended use. LOL

In a bolt action, I wouldn't worry about it too much, if at all. Any quality bolt action is strong enough to handle the higher pressures of 5.56.
Most of us with .223 trainer rifles shoot 5.56 pressure factory and handloads out of our rifles.
My unpopular opinion is to shoot a few rounds of 5.56 and check for signs of pressure.

Why can't you have a gunsmith throat the .223 chamber with the longer lead of a 5.56 mm? I do not recommend trying to shoot 5.56 mm in .223 boltgun. Blew primers when I tried it years ago. Especially, 5.56 loaded to NATO pressures.

Maggot, your Remy sps has a throat a mile long, probably longer than a 5.56 chamber would.
